80 years ago today at this moment, a teenager bled out on a foreign beach. He died in pain and terrified, cold and alone, crying out for a loved one he knew he'd never see again.

Bravery and sacrifice I can barely comprehend. What he saw. What he felt. What he gave.
He died for my freedom and yours.

Me? I will raise a glass to this hero I never knew. I will think of the wife he never got to meet or fall in love with. I will think of the joy on his child's face when he returned after a long absence, that he never got to see. I will think of the wonder in his grandchild's eyes as they sat on his knee and he told tales of the good old days, that he never lived to tell.

I may never have known him, but I WILL remember him.

I will remember all of them.
