"Namibia's just a desert. There's nothing to see."
❌ WRONG ❌ This could not be further from the truth!

Explore towering red dunes, shipwrecks on the Skeleton Coast, and plains with prehistoric rock art.

Discover vast salt pans, starry skies, and colonial German seaside towns.

Traverse this stunning landscape at your own pace on a 4×4 self-drive road trip or a tailored private tour.

However, it’s the encounters with Namibia’s people that will make your trip.

Weave baskets in an Ovambo homestead, make fire with Himba women, and meet the semi-nomadic San people, descendants of some of the world's oldest humans.

Visited Japan already and looking to return and explore somewhere a bit different?

Or perhaps it's your first time but you want to spend part of your trip away from crowds and immersed in one of the beating hearts of the south?

Enter Kyushu, Japan's third largest island and a treasure trove of hot springs, history and southern-style, delicious hospitality.

We work with some amazing supplier partners, and in the words of our Japan specialist here’s 7 reasons why you should visit Kyushu...

𝗩𝗼𝗹𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗼𝗲𝘀

Forget Fuji – Kyushu is the real land of fire.

Japan is home to a tenth of the world’s active volcanoes, and Kyushu’s Mount A*o is the biggest of the lot.

The surrounding countryside also happens to be absolutely beautiful, and when A*o isn’t belching too much smoke and ash, it’s possible to hike to the top and peer into its bright blue crater lake.

𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗶𝘀𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀

Kyushu is the gateway to some of our favourite Japanese islands, which can be reached by ferry or plane from the island’s coastal cities.

Yakushima, not far from Kagoshima, is covered in primeval rainforest and populated mainly by deer and monkeys, and is the last remnant of the warm-temperate rainforests that once dominated this part of the world.

It’s also home to Japan’s oldest tree, Jomon Sugi, a cryptomeria which is thought to be between 2-7,000 years old!

𝗛𝗼𝘁 𝘀𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀

Wherever there are volcanoes, there are hot springs – and Kyushu has some of Japan’s finest.

For dramatic, moon-like landscapes filled with billowing steam, bubbling pools, and the smell of sulphur, head to Unzen Onsen.

For the quintessential hot-spring town, filled with wooden bathhouses and aromatic cypress baths, there’s nowhere better than Kurokawa Onsen.

And for hot-spring bathing on the beach, head to Yakushima.

𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗿𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲

Japan may be most famous for its sprawling cities and towering skyscrapers, but there is beautiful countryside to be found on all of the country’s main islands.

Kyushu’s landscapes tend to be lush, green and open, with a very different atmosphere to the towering mountains of Honshu, the hidden valleys of Shikoku, or the windswept plains of northern Hokkaido.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲

Perhaps it’s the warm climate, but everybody who visits Kyushu seems to remark on the languid pace of life and cheerful, laid-back attitude of its residents.

The frenetic rush of Tokyo and the in-your-face brashness of Osaka have their own merits, but it is Kyushu where you will really get a chance to slow down and enjoy the open and welcoming attitude of your hosts.

𝗛𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆

Everybody knows about the devastating history of Nagasaki, but this vibrant city has a much longer and richer history than most people realise.

Nagasaki was one of the only places open to foreign trade during Japan’s long period of isolation, and the remnants of that early cultural exchange are still evident in the city today.

Grab a slice of Portuguese-inspired castella cake, visit some of the oldest European houses in Japan at Glover Gardens, and wander the streets of Dejima Island, once the only place in Japan that Dutch and Portuguese merchants were allowed to live and trade.

𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱

Literally everywhere in Japan has incredible food – and Kyushu is no different.

Hakata ramen is the island’s signature dish, made with a pork bone broth and flavoured with soy sauce and miso. Anybody who has tried it tends to come over all misty-eyed whenever it’s mentioned.

Kyushu is also famous for its beef, which is claimed by many to be the most mouthwatering in Japan, and it’s the place to try fugu — the potentially fatal pufferfish prepared only by licensed chefs(?!)

The thrill of adventure is omnipresent at Zannier Hotels Sonop…

The opulence and finesse of the tented camp, set in Namibia’s southwest corner, immediately recalls the 1920’s era of British explorers.

On arrival you immediately step back in time, transported to old-world safari.

Constructed on top of granite boulders, Sonop’s remote and unspoiled setting of 13,800 acres of untouched wilderness.

Every object and antique in the ten spacious tents are carefully selected – binoculars and maps, travellers’ tales, telescopes, antique desks and handmade stationary – to ensure that every moment turns into a unique experience.

From the reception room to the partially-walled bathroom and vintage bathtubs, and private terrace, everything focuses on the richness of the desert and awe-inspiring views.

The lodge captures the restorative essence of the desert landscape with a spectacular open-air infinity pool, spa, fitness centre and daily yoga, to truly integrate guest’s wellbeing with the natural world.

When desert adventure calls, guided excursions include horse-riding from their own stables, private dining atop of the sand dunes, electric fat-bike or walking trails, hot air balloon safari and private sunset safaris.

The magic continues after dark with a nightly gala-style dinner, open-air cinema and stargazing under the endless African skies.

🔅 CLIENT TESTIMONIAL 🔅
𝘚𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘩 𝘈𝘧𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢

I recently booked a fab two week Garden Route self drive holiday for clients of my lovely colleague, Jane.

The only change to my suggested itinerary was an additional night on safari (as they loved the lodge so much!) and they also added in an additional shark cage dive!

I often work in conjunction with colleagues to share my expertise in this style of style.

Teamwork makes the dream work!

Here's what Jane's clients had to say:

"Both Jane and Jen have been extremely accommodating and professional with helping us with our itinerary for our holiday.

Would recommend to anyone!"

Krabi is a hidden gem that many discover - and fall in love with - while en route to the more wellknown islands of Ko Lanta and Ko Phi Phi.

When they do visit, the luckiest check into Rayavadee.

Accessed by stylish speedboat, the resort is surrounded on three sides by glorious sand beaches, and lush jungle greenery, imbuing a sense of tropical relaxation.

Keeping with the special setting, Rayavadee has had an ambitious sustainability program since it opened.

The resort may feel like a secret, but its restaurant is one of Thailand’s most renowned. Aptly named The Grotto, it is built into an ancient cave, giving it an ideal vantage point for guests who linger over cocktails while admiring a sunset-tinged sky.

Hacienda Bambusa offers an oasis of peace in the shadow of the snow-capped Andes and lies within an authentic cacao plantation.

Fans of the Disney film Encanto may feel at home as it is said the Colombian hotel provided the inspiration for the musical famous for the hit song We Don’t Talk About Bruno!

The thoughtfully renovated property is still a working farm and the hacienda has eight rustic rooms built from a mix of bamboo and clay where you can enjoy views of the pool or garden.

Each room is idyllically designed with pops of vibrant colours. The veranda is the perfect spot to retreat with a book and sway in your hammock. The rooms are provided with fine linen, king-size beds, and private bathrooms.

A myriad of activities are on offer during your stay at Hacienda Bambusa from a hot air balloon flight over the coffee estate to zip lining and indulging in a wellness ritual.

No visit would be complete without coffee tasting with a local barista. You can also brush up on your culinary skills with a cooking lesson. The more active visitors can go mountain biking or hike around the farm spotting birds such as the iridescent hummingbird.
