The Matriarch Adventure A real adventure tracking desert elephants in the wildest environment. Are you up for the challenge?

Driven by an urge to give women a chance to mix things up a little and take time out of their everyday lives to re-connect with themselves, and with nature, Catherine Edsell, expedition leader, conservationist and adventurer, dreamed up the idea of an expedition solely for women where they too could be adventurers, conservationists, and practice yoga as the sun rises, but with the added bonus of h

aving time to reflect and absorb the vastness of the extreme landscape in which they find themselves and experts on hand to help them with any transformation they may wish to embark on. If you choose to join this adventure, you will definitely be challenged both physically and mentally but equally supported through this journey with inspiring leadership, daily yoga and meditation, whilst tracking the world's most iconic matriarchal species through the Namibian desert. In collaboration with EHRA a Namibian NGO who have worked for the last 12 years in elephant conservation, Catherine and the team will provide the space, time and clarity of thought you need to return to your roles as mother, wife, business woman, (and all those other roles we play), refreshed and rejuvenated. This is not a luxury holiday, this is an expedition - an experience you will never forget.

Introducing ~ THE MATRIARCH ADVENTURE 2025 🐘

Conservation, exploration, completely off the beaten track in Namibia, this is a truly unique expedition! It is very hard to join a real expedition these days - many claim to be, but they are actually just tours, so I wanted to give you a little behind the scenes information for The Matriarch Adventure running from 11th -20th October 2025 in case you're craving something truly different from anything else out there!
https://cathadventure.com/the-matriarch-adventure

We combine conservation and adventure with an ethos of personal exploration at its heart. I have been leading global expeditions for over 20 years, and this is my favourite place in all the world!

Each expedition is unique, as we are primarily led by the movements of rare desert adapted elephants. There is also time made for trekking and experiencing the vastness of this incredible country. We will be wild camping every night, far from any human habitation and will move through the landscape on 4x4 vehicles.

Each expedition contributes directly to EHRA (Elephant Human Relations Aid) who protect and monitor the desert adapted elephant population by working directly with the local community. I guarantee you will come away with a new passion for conservation, Namibia and with lifelong friends!

Here are some testimonials from past participants: “If you think you are booking a holiday think again! This is a true expedition and the rewards from that are life changing. Catherine, you are an inspirational matriarch! You lead from the back, ever present but not forcing anyone’s pace. The organisation was exceptional, I always knew what we were doing and when, so didn’t have to stress about the unknowns. I loved your mindfulness and connection to Namibia and the evening reflections.” Deb

“The EHRA team are all amazing. Their passion to protect these special desert herds really shines through in all they do in a quiet and gentle way, despite all the challenges. Their approach with the community and education are really long term ways to change perceptions, and their resilience is clear to see.” Sue

“You get to be so much more aware of your feelings and environment when you strip back everything unnecessary. It is wild and freeing and extraordinary and scary and joyous and unforgettable! And I loved the secrets and the planning.” Sara
So if you feel called to really push your own boundaries, but be held in a safe and supported environment, with other likeminded women then look no further.

This expedition is for all, no matter how young (18+) or old as we have permanent vehicle support. It is also off grid, giving you the opportunity to have a well needed digital detox and be completely present in the moment!

So, as some of you may know I have spent many years working as a Reef Check trainer, leading marine conservation expeditions and working on various marine based citizen science projects around the world with whale sharks, s***m whales, dolphins and on coral reefs. I am not a 'scientist' but am driven by my interest in the natural world and seek to discover how we can do our bit to mitigate some of the environmental issues that face our oceans. This is well within all of our reach, and I'd like to encourage more people to get involved.

Next February, Love Her Wild's founder Bex Band and I are organising the first Ocean Advocate Summit in Bristol. This whole day event is designed to inspire and involve you with hands-on workshops, inspirational talks, opportunities to meet small charities and individuals who are doing their bit and hear how they too, started from nowhere. We'll not only be looking at projects overseas, but those closer to home, so something for everyone!

To launch this we are offering an early bird discount running until the end of the month, so if you would like to join us in a day of full immersion here is the link to book 🐬https://www.tickettailor.com/events/oceanadvocate/1309260

Hope to see you there, and please do spread the word!

Great news from our partners in Namibia! With a 22 month gestation period and the odds stacked against these desert adapted elephants this is a very happy day!

And it's a girl! 🎀🐘

We're bursting with excitement to announce the arrival of a precious new baby elephant in the Huab river region.

This adorable calf is the newest addition to the H2 herd - also known as Rosy's herd. 💖

At just one week old, she's already exploring her world with curiosity and joy – and we can't get enough of watching her daily discoveries!

Please join us in extending a heartfelt welcome to little ‘Mimi,’ the sixth offspring of Rosa.

With Rosa's track record of raising five healthy calves, we're confident Mimi is in good trunks. 😉

We ask that you refrain from approaching the elephants closely to prevent stressing out Mimi or causing her to walk excessively.

Maintain a distance of 70 meters and avoid staying close for more than 15 minutes.

"I WANTED TO GO OUT AND CHANGE THE WORLD...
BUT I COULDN'T FIND A BABYSITTER..."

To all the mums out there who have, at some point in their lives, felt like this. I know it. I've been there. This is my 10 mins of reflection on what it is to be a mum. It may resonate with your story, it may not, but let me know! We don't have to do this alone 🥰

This is a bit off piste for The Matriarch Adventure, but for a few years now women have been asking me to run something in the UK. Until now, I hadn't settled on the right mix of wilderness, restoration and community, but here it is, and I'm really thrilled to introduce The Living Mountain Retreat 15th - 19th April

Based out of Nethy Bridge in The Cairngorms National Park, Scotland, this is a really special retreat led by myself and Katie Flaxman who is not only a poet and a writer, but a qualified gong practitioner, so with her skills and mine we will take really good care of you.

On this adventure together we want to offer both challenge and softness, community and connection. Through contact with nature, sound, vibration, words and movement we hope to bring to our own inner landscapes, some of what Nan Shepherd discovered in this wild and remarkable place.

We are fortunate that our exclusive use accommodation is in an incredible location within The Cairngorms National Park itself. 'An Cala' is a haven, surrounded by trees, and permeated by the sounds of the river. It has the luxury of an outside hot tub and outside shower on the big private deck overlooking the river, a generous kitchen and dining area, four bathrooms and two cosy wood fires.

What a perfect place to relax an unwind after a walk in the hills!
And if you've never had a gong bath you're in for a real treat!

Please do get in touch if you would like to join!

✨Wondering what to do with your one wild and precious life this year? ✨

For you, the woman who has young children, I know how hard it is to carve time for yourself, to acknowledge the guilt that creeps up into your chest as you crave a little time away, and the bravery it takes to do it anyway.

For you the woman whose children have flown the nest, left with a space, a remembering of who you once were, that vibrant, purposeful you, but as you look down at your body, a feeling of regret rises – where is she? But she calls to you from inside. She’s still there.

She’s still there the young woman who was carefree, driven, purposeful and single-minded. She’s still there the warrior, the adventurer, the one whose future is promising.
Whatever stage and situation of life you’re in there’s always a place for taking yourself off into the cave, for scraping in the dirt to find the answers to your questions, for feeling the joy of just not caring, as your wild hair and sun-kissed skin pays homage to the sunset, the sunrise, the star filled nights.

The Matriarch Adventure is, amongst other things, a mysterious journey into the wilderness of yourself. It has elements of everything from the mundane to the overwhelming, from barrenness to bounty, and from eerie silence to the deepest earthly rumble.

This adventure calls for curiosity.

It takes courage to step into the unknown, to walk into the mystery, but the mystery and the discomfort is part of the journey we need to travel to deepen our relationship with ourselves and each other. We live with uncertainty every day, and our efforts to control every element of our lives is oh so exhausting, but what if we turn that on its head.

What if we swap control for curiosity and uncertainty for mystery?

A totally different flavour for what we are embarking on. Look at fairy tales, myths, legends, where the heroes and heroines choose to step into the unknown, they leave everything that they know behind, they don’t know the direction in which they will travel, but they invariably meet people, animals, flowers, rivers, trees and mountains that teach them lessons, give them gifts and help them on their journey. There are also obstacles, discomforts, hardships, and difficult inner turmoil, but the difference is that they have to face these challenges head on. There’s no Instagram feed or latest Netflix season to distract, no 6pm glass of wine to take the edge off, no sinking into oblivion, unless of course they have been enchanted or drugged by an evil merchant, but there, of course, is the allegory! Even in fairy tales and myths, the initiate has to actually take action, there is always the option to do nothing, to continue as you have always done. But what if you really choose to push the boundaries, to take a leap of faith, to step out on a journey that is different to anything you have ever done before.

This is what The Matriarch Adventure was created for – an old fashioned adventure, a curiosity-filled mysterious way of travelling for women who have been caught up in a frenzy of being everything to everyone, whether that’s family, friends, at work, on social media. What about YOU! When did you last feed the protagonist of your own story with food for the soul?

To be sat around a fire with new friends swapping stories, watching smoke rise and sparks fly high into the night’s sky. Lying out underneath a blanket bejewelled by the milky way and watching the constellations move through the cloudless sky mapping the myths of Orion’s duel with Scorpio, one bright star definitively showing you where you are in the world as you spin on its axis. Then at midnight, waking, startled, to the guttural roar of baboons, a primordial sound that you somehow recognise. Then again at dawn, turning your face to the rising sun, feeling the prickling expectancy of a new day. Feasting around a stirred, everlasting pot of porridge, so simple, yet the tastiest porridge you’ve ever tasted. Jumping into rusted chariots and tracking the largest land mammals on the planet. Now this is starting to sound a bit like a mythical adventure, but honestly, it can be yours if you hear the call.

Adventure to far flung places is not the only way to make sense of things, but in my experience it certainly helps. I’ve been an expedition leader for over 20 years, so don’t worry, we have risk assessments in place, there are medical forms you’ll need to sign, and we carry a satellite phone and comprehensive first aid kits, but this is so YOU don’t have to worry about any of this, YOU just have to head out into the unknown and trust the process.

You don’t need to be fearless, you just need to be curious enough to test your mettle, to see what you’re made of and to rekindle the fire in your own heart. Invite the girl who wished to be a boy, the girl who threw stones and broke the ice beneath her feet, the girl who had dreams of faraway places and believed in magic and mystery, the girl who took the left fork in the road. We can make sense of all this in our everyday lives, we can ‘talk it through’, seek counselling, but we also have the tools ourselves to actively chip away at our own story, to step into uncertainty. In the heat of the underworld, or in this case, the desert, we can forge a new version of ourselves, gather the gifts and the insights we find or are given to us along the way and return with wisdom.

Or perhaps you just want to put your phone away, and enjoy the ride! 😊

So, this is an invitation 🧡
