Animals can have a positive effect on so many of us. For autistic children – many of whom struggle with social interaction and connection – they can act as a ‘bridge’ to connecting with others.

In this month’s Education Today magazine, Options Autism’s Managing Director, Emma Sanderson looks at the use of animals in specialist provision, and how they have the potential to contribute to the progress and development of pupils.

Autistic individuals often see the world from a different perspective.

Neurodivergent individuals often see the world from a different perspective.

They may experience some differences in their ‘Executive Functioning’, making it difficult to manage tasks, but this different thinking style could also mean they have unique problem-solving skills. Executive Functioning is an often-used umbrella term that covers a person’s ability to process information, plan, sequence and carry out tasks.

Our expert teams work with neurodivergent individuals and their families to understand some of the strengths and challenges of living with a different kind of executive functioning. Chief Clinical Officer, Dr Freya Spicer-White, explains more here: bit.ly/4bRtEAl

A pupil at Baston House School has created some amazing artwork after learning about the effects of pollution on wildlife. 🎨♻️

Michael created these brilliant pieces of art using recycled canvases and paint that would have gone to landfill and also used a paint pouring technique and stencil which he cut and designed himself. 😍

The school will be exhibiting his work at the school barbecue, where they are hoping to raise money for the art department. We are big fans of your creative work, Michael – well done!

Every child deserves to be educated in a safe setting that delivers the right level of education.

However, this is often not the case for the most vulnerable young people, because establishing Alternative Provision for autistic pupils and those with special needs can be difficult and challenging.

In this month’s Education Today magazine, Options Autism’s Managing Director, Emma Sanderson says the needs of pupils are outstripping specialist provision, and until there are enough schools available for the most vulnerable, the issue is here to stay.

Persistent absence continues to be a pressing issue in schools across England.

While there is a place for a national framework to tackle inconsistencies in absence, we need to find out why young people are not attending rather than continuing to put financial penalties on their families.

In this month’s Education Today magazine, Options Autism’s Managing Director, Emma Sanderson argues that education – the “unofficial fourth Emergency Service” – needs help from Government in improving attendance levels.

Research suggests that between 70-80% of autistic people will experience some form of mental health problems in their lifetime. Our neurodiversity strategy – Ask, Accept, Develop – helps explain and understand the issues, and looks at the support that can be provided with kindness and patience.

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week, so it seems timely to reflect on the impact this has on autistic individuals, and why mental health matters so much.

Overton School got right behind Neurodiversity Celebration Week in March! 🙌

Our theme was The Big Ask, and the pupils voted to stage An Audience with Overton, with everyone sharing what it means to them to be neurodiverse.

Everyone used their own preferred method to communicate, and pupils even created bracelets which contained keywords that mean a lot to them. An amazing 60 bracelets were sold, with all proceeds going to the Society for Neurodiversity. 🤩

The school is so proud of the efforts of all pupils, in an inspiring, raw and emotive celebration of learning and demonstrating how Overton develops, supports and celebrates all.
