🏉🌍 Brace yourselves, Wales fans – tomorrow we’re up against South Africa, the reigning world champions!

Facing the Springboks is like trying to tackle a runaway dragon – we’ll give it our all, but we might need a stiff drink by halftime. Still, hope springs eternal in the land of song! To distract ourselves from the impending scrum, here are three 'did you know' facts about South Africa:

🇿🇦 Did you know…?

South Africa is the only country in the world with three capital cities – Pretoria, Cape Town, and Bloemfontein. Clearly, one capital just isn’t enough when you’re running a nation like the Springboks run a pitch!

The country produces over half of the world’s gold. No wonder their trophy cabinet is so shiny.

The South African national anthem is sung in five different languages. Impressive, but come on – have they heard a packed Principality Stadium belting out Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau? Didn’t think so.

Here’s to our brave boys in red – may they surprise us, or at least give us something to chat about in the pub after. Pob lwc, Cymru! 🏉

A top tip for today!

Always label what you put in the freezer.
I defrosted what I thought was a lamb curry the other night and had some rice and mango chutney to go with it. I was really looking forward to a fab meal – but once the lamb curry was defrosted, it turned out to be stewed rhubarb!

I was working on a late shift at the BBC so no other food available – so had to have rhubarb, rice and chutney!

Interesting but I won’t be having it again!

🏉🌍 Come on, Wales! We’re in for a bruiser on Sunday against Australia at 4:10 PM!

Let’s face it – being a Welsh rugby fan is a bit like trying to teach a sheep to swim; it’s full of heart, woolly optimism, and an occasional flop. But we’ll be cheering all the same! Just in case we don’t make it out alive, here are three totally random facts about our Australian mates:

🇦🇺 Did you know…?

Australia has three times as many sheep as people. We thought we loved sheep, but clearly, the Aussies have us beat!

The Australian Alps get more snow than the Swiss Alps. We’re still wrapping our heads around this one... snowy mountains, in Australia?

Australia is home to a pink lake (Lake Hillier) that looks like strawberry milkshake. Sadly, no, it’s not actually a giant milkshake. Shame, really.

Here’s to our boys in red – let’s make it a game to remember (or a game to forget quickly – it could go either way). Pob lwc, Wales! 🏉🍺

Venison steak with blackberry mead sauce

PREP TIME: 10 minutes
COOK TIME: 25 minutes
INGREDIENTS Serving 2
1 shallot
2 tbsp rapeseed oil
4 juniper berries, crushed
1 orange
100g blackberries
100ml Afon Mel blackberry mead
1 tbsp grated fresh ginger
1 dsp redcurrant jelly
2 venison steaks
15g Welsh butter

To Start
Make the sauce by finely chopping the shallot then heating one tablespoon of oil in a small pan over a medium heat.
Add the shallots and cook for around 6 minutes until softened.

Meanwhile

Zest the rind of the orange, squeeze the juice, and add both to the shallots along with the juniper berries, blackberries, ginger and mead and cook for around 5 minutes until the blackberries begin to soften.

Reduce the heat and add the redcurrant jelly then taste and season with salt, pepper, and cook for a further 5 minutes.

Set aside while you cook the steaks.

Simply season the steaks with salt and pepper and heat a frying pan over a medium to hot heat.
Then add the rest of the oil and butter and once melted cook the steaks for 3 minutes on both sides for medium.

Pour off any excess fat, add the sauce to the pan, and reheat for a few minutes.

To serve
Serve the steak sliced if you wish, accompanied by the sauce and mustard mashed potato and steamed broccoli or cavolo nero.

To help celebrate Great British Game Week, here is a fantastic recipe for Figgy Pheasant Traybake courtesy of one of our guides and resident food expert and consultant, Nerys.

Serves 4
Ingredients
4 pheasant breasts
1 whole garlic bulb
3 tbsp sherry vinegar
8 sprigs thyme
2 red onions
6 fresh figs
12 black olives halved and stoned
3 tbsp rapeseed oil

Method

1. Marinade the pheasant by crushing 2 cloves of garlic and mixing with a tablespoon of vinegar and the leaves from a few sprigs of thyme. Season the breasts with salt and pepper and leave in the marinade for a few hours or overnight.

2. Heat the oven to 200C/180Fan/Gas 6 and put the remaining garlic cloves whole in their skin in a large deep oven tray. Peel and cut the onions into 8 wedges and add to the garlic. Then cut the figs in half and add to the tin along with the remaining thyme.

3. Pour over the oil and toss the vegetables and figs with your hands then season with salt and pepper and drizzle over the remaining vinegar and any marinade then roast for 20 minutes.

4. Heat a frying pan over a high heat and quickly brown the marinaded pheasant breast on both sides then transfer to the oven tray once the onions have roasted and scatter over the olives. Roast for a further 10 minutes until the meat is cooked.

5. Remove from the oven and serve straight from the tray with some crispy potatoes and a green salad.
