Oh Man, just the first for me
Petroglyphs (are made by pecking directly on the rock surface using a stone chisel and or/a hammerstone).
The super low water levels on the River Essequibo back in Feb/Mar, exposed these unique and rarely seen carvings.
Unable to get much background on these, but it is thought they were created during a time where there were three dominant Amerindian tribes, probably all after the same patch of land / resource.
To all my Guyanese friends out there, please add to this post if you have a little more history, we would love to hear it....

REDTAIL Catfish....
Wherever you fish in S America, Redtail Catfish always seem to be in the mix...
We have seen these to way over 120lb and they are one of the most sought after and treasured species on our trips along with the Jau and Lau.
If you want to get into this mix, then contact:

JAGUAR CAMP, the River Essequibo, Guyana.
One of the best moments for me is when one of our guests gains another 'species' under their belt.
None so more then Amazon-Angler.com guest (and my wife) Annastasia Tolley-Clarke with an unexpected but much appreciated Surubim Catfish, taken from a secluded lagoon.
Not the biggest ever, but a great result - BOOM and well done honey.
Want some of this, then check our schedule for late 2024, 2025 and 2026, but hurry, spaces on this incredible mixed species trip are being swallowed up quickly

JAGUAR CAMP, the River Essequibo, Guyana, Feb/Mar 24
PACU Madness
And another first for Amazon-Angler.com guest (and wifey) Annastasia Tolley-Clarke with one of her glorious Pacu (Check out the Piranha damage on this one).
We certainly hit the sweet spot in the fast flowing shallows, and were surrounded by shoals of these powerful and spirited fish. Every now and then within the masses you would see the bright flash of a red Pacu, but they were just so difficult to individually target.
With nearly nine trips scheduled for the end of 202 / early 2025, we still have some final spaces on this incredible multi-species angling adventure, so if you are interested in joining us, please contact:

Whilst I work so closely with Steve at Amazon Angler, it seems so rare that we meet up in person as our trip schedules rarely align.
But this was great, catching up with the 'main man' as we crossed over in Apoteri back in Feb 24, a brief chat before the flights demanded a closure to our conversations.
Catch up again Steve, whether Guyana, Brazil, Colombia, Bolivia etc.
At Amazon-Adventure.co.uk we are always here to support you

Amazon-Angler.com guest and my better half Annastasia Tolley-Clarke with one of a brace of Arapaima taken on day 2.
Whist Anna certainly had a big smile on her face, the 'Arry' didn't seem to impressed.
Either way, it had some good R&R before returning to the waters, safe and sound.
Well done Anna, helping prove yet again that the ladies can certainly hold their own when it comes to fishing the Amazon.

Jaguar Camp Feb/Mar 2024, the River Essequibo, Guyana
Such a great trip...
Top photo of Amazon-Angler.com guest Ian (The PACU Whisperer) Pugh, with a beautiful Red specimen.
Ian absolutely smashed these on our trip with just so many fish in his account.
Blistering good action especially in the fast flowing shallows, they have such power and provide incredible sport (along with a test of your tackle).
Great going Ian, as a seasoned Amazon angler you are cool, calculated and proficient in your approach.
It was a pleasure hosting for you (again) on behalf of Amazon Angler.

All,
Jaguar Camp, the Essequibo River, Guyana Feb/Mar 2024
I wanted to leave posting until the ‘flurry’ of guest posts had landed, so it seems like now is a good time to start.
Very simply, the trip in Feb/Mar (last of the season) was testing, with incredibly low water levels, which whilst offering new angling landscapes, introduced challenges in just moving around and finding the spots.
However, with an amazing group of guests to host for, (on behalf of Amazon-Angler.com) we managed 28 species, with all guests catching their prime target of an Arapaima (in the wild), and oh man, they all did so well, with fish up to an estimated 280lb. We also took a wide variety of catfish, although there were no real sizes, a product of the extreme water conditions.
The attached photos sum up the landscape we encountered, and whilst outstanding in beauty was also crazy as at the same time last year we were praying for levels to drop, versus this year where we could do nothing about the c.4m drop and continuing daily loss.
In all, it was a total success, and I will post more over the coming weeks / months to cover the fish (some rare and unusual), the wildlife and the overall environment.

Jaguar Explorer Camp, The Essequibo, Guyana

Of the two endemic Peacock Bass (PB) species to be found within the Essequibo, the yellow, or Cichla Cataractae is generally the largest.
Even though their sizes are generally less than those found in Colombia or Brazil, they are immense fun, particularly on M/L tackle.
We have been catching these in Guyana for many years, however it was only recently that this particular species was fully described, increasing the overall PB species count to 16 species.

In the Essequibo, these can be taken throughout the water column, generally top to mid-water and they just love poppers, jigs, and lures within the 4-6ft section, historically the firetiger uniform has worked really well.

When conditions are right, chuck a lure out on the slack at the back of rocks, and if you get one, guaranteed there will be another waiting.
Just love this angling.

23 is going, going gone, so....
In the prep for 2024, a big thanks to Steve Townson Amazon-Angler for the help and support over the last year (and more).
It's been an honour and privilege to host the Amazon-Angler.com trips, specifically in Guyana, a position which has introduced me to such incredible groups of anglers, adventurous enough to embark on these unique and challenging trips.
Looking forward to our further adventures....
Tight lines to all, wherever you are angling, and whatever your target species are.

WOW, BICUDA....
These little 'pocket missiles' are just the best of fun.
get a 4-6lb, its interesting, get a 6-10lb and it's a challenge.
These are some of the most acrobatic species you will encounter, with a voracious appetite, a mouth full of sharps, and an insatiable attitude for creating mayhem, they are just the best sport imaginable.
Get these on poppers, and sticks on the surface, their takes are violent and in keeping with their aggressive attitude to life.

A time for reflection…..
Just casting my thoughts over the last 5-6 years working with Steve Townson Amazon-Angler and how that association has affected me, in terms of travel, locations and the incredible number of people I have had the pleasure to meet and fish with, and I thank Steve so much for providing me with those incredible opportunities (including a new relationship with Annastasia Tolley-Clarke.
I always vowed to maintain a record of my trips, and tbh, that didn’t kick in until 2019, but since then I have tried (not always successful) to build a detailed account of each and every adventure, the guests, the fish, the fishing spots and how we interacted, including my personal observations of us (as a group) working together.
Reflecting on my diaries has been inspiring, educational, and enlightening, I had forgotten just so much, so may events, so many occasions, so many fabulous people.
With Guyana coming up in 2024, I will add another diary to the collection – and who know, maybe a book will come out of these accounts one day – but no worries, names will always be protected – LoL.
Long live our ability to take in adventures…..

02/12/2023

Wow!!
Seen just so much on FB recently about fishing 'guides in the Amazon !
So here's the deal....
A good 'guide' will be indigenous to the region, they will have an intimate knowledge of the fishery and will have point focus on where you (the client) need to work, and how you need to work to meet your aspirations / expectations - they know because it's their life and they have been doing it for many years - period. This is a badge they hold, and it is beyond challenge / question - respect that.

Your fishing 'Host' is different - your host puts all the work into getting you hooked up with the guide - a task that many will think is easy, but I will correct you. Making arrangements to put a bunch of fish hungry anglers, with no idea of the challenges they will encounter, into this harsh environment is 'hard work'

So, for all of you embarking on trips like this - please respect both host and guide, as without their effort and commitment, you wouldn't be there.
Just saying...
