UNPOPULAR OPINION...
Your surfboard being one litre too big for you isn't the reason you don't surf as well as you want to.
This isn't meant to diminish, this is meant to empower...
If someone can do a roundhouse cutback that radical on a 9ft+ longboard, then your 33l shortboard (that some surf shop 'bro' told you is one litre too big for you) is not what is holding you back and you can work to get there too.
*Side note*
We often get asked if our trips are just for 'shortboarders' or people who want to 'rip'...
The bottom line is that good surfing is good surfing and the fundamentals are exactly the same regardless of your preferred surfboard style.
You can guarantee that one thing Mick Fanning, Torren Martyn and Joel Tudor have in common is a good bottom turn...
Fun waves for Day 1 of our Intermediate Coaching Trip this morning ✌️
TRIP UPDATE 🔥
Days like these 🙏
An entree of cruisy lefts followed by a main course and dessert of long, speedy rights. Minimal crowds and not a breath of wind all day.
We’ve a mix of levels onboard this trip. The user-friendly Maldivian lineups allowed those with more experience to pick off bombs sitting further up the reef, whilst those with less experience sat nearer to the deep-water channel, safely pushing their limits in the bigger conditions - perfect!
We’ve seen huge progression thanks to coach @pepijntigges ✌️ more swell on the way!
We’re midway through a 10-night Central Atolls trip with a group from the Netherlands. Progression has been through the roof thanks to daily coaching from @markboydsurf 🙌
How have the waves been?
In all honesty, we’re struggling to find the words; think of the glassiest, longest, most ripable waves you can, remove the crowd, and you’re probably not far off…
6:00: surf check with the drone.
6:05: a filmed session in speedy lefts without a soul for miles.
7:45: return to boat with breakfast on the table 🙌
A typical morning with @renegadesurf
Oh how we’ve missed this! Coach @markboydsurf cracks 5 to the beach on the first session of our 2022 season 🙌
As of this week, vaccinated travelers will no longer need a negative PCR test to enter The Maldives 🙌
That means less time with a cotton bud up your nose and more time hammering lips ⬆️🏝
@baardskeie wanted to improve his roundhouse cutback on our July 2021 coaching trip, and there’s no doubt he did.
He initially struggled with some ‘counter-rotation’ of the shoulders - where his arms would infact end up going the other way to which they should. Coach @pepijntigges helped fix this, as shown above by his front arm pointing back to the whitewash he’s aiming to hit beautifully.
The most obvious improvement Bard could add to his roundhouse cutty? It’s simple; watch the slow-mo footage at the end of the video. He never actually looks at the section he’s aiming to hit.
If he were to spot this target to aim for he’d benefit from more rotation, and be able to rebound off the foam even better.
Bigger board, more fun?
Surfing 3x a day gives you plenty of opportunities to experiment within your quiver.
Here, @j0hnjac0bsen tries his @almerricksurfboards ‘Black Beauty’ Step-Up in conditions slightly smaller than it was originally designed for.
Judging by the smile on his face, it still goes pretty well!
When it’s on, this wave can be one of the longest in The Maldives 🤤
Join coach @pepijntigges as he carves beautifully on a playful day back in July.
"Absolutely amazing. Saw some of the greatest waves down here in 'the cennies'... Had a fantastic time. Excellent food, excellent company. I suggest everyone jump on."
"Agreed"

More proof of just how much you can improve your surfing in a short period of time…
Ole was struggling with making sections on some of the faster waves, which often left him getting caught behind.
Fast-forward less than a week, and he’s racing down the line, performing turns in the critical section of the wave.

A fantastic first day of waves for our second Cornish coaching retreat! We scored clean, quiet conditions on the South Coast, with local knowledge resulting in a peak to ourselves and over 50 clips to analyze back at the house.
Whilst everyone scored some quality waves, a common theme in the video analysis was choosing the wrong maneuver for a section.
Take Craig’s wave above. He does excellently on the takeoff to make it around the section, his bottom turn is solid, and his cutback is nice and high on the face.
Although, when looking back at the video we decided a cutback wasn’t the right choice of maneuver for this section. Craig has plenty of speed with a closeout section incoming; he doesn’t need to cutback to the foam to maintain his speed. In doing so, he actually loses some speed and is unable to get his board back into the lip on the end section.
We agreed a maneuver with less rotation than the cutback, such as a snap or a quick down-carve, would have been a better choice in this situation.
We’re back on the hunt for waves today, and we’re excited to see the progression!
@baardskeie and @jarandfretheim going back-to-back on pure glass🤤

Does it get any better? An empty, freight-train left hander grinding down the reef, with an added shipwreck just for good measure. Welcome to Finnimas in the Central Atolls. If you look closely, you’ll see Inside Mikado in the background.
Whilst this set-up may look paradisiacal, what’s hard to tell from this drone clip is the size and speed of that wave; it’s at least double-overhead, and the few times we tried to surf here, even the fastest surfers in the group were getting caught behind.
That said, with the right swell direction the wave slows down a little, resulting in one of the heaviest, shallowest waves in the area whilst providing the goofy-footers with some frontside action.
Did we mention there’s a right breaking off this peak, too?
Make 2022 the year you score waves like this. Drop us a DM to get the ball rolling on your dream trip 🌴
@dmkirs focusing on staying close to the pocket whilst surfing cruisy, lesser-known spot in the Central Atolls 🏄♂️
Join coach @pepijntigges as he floats over a section on a fun-sized wave in the central atolls. Floaters are essential for getting past sections without losing speed and this ‘up-and-over’ approach will increase the length of your rides massively.
✅ Set-up - Pep spots the section about to break in-front of him and performs a shallow bottom turn. A deep bottom turn isn’t required; we want down-the-line speed which is achieved by throwing the arms up and extending.
✅ Timing - watch how the lip begins to throw just as he begins the floater; if he was too late his nose wouldn’t be able to get above the lip, and if he was too early he’d fall off the back of the wave. His front foot needs to be above the breaking section in order for his back foot to follow.
✅ Execution - Now Pep is experiencing the weightless sensation of the floater whilst remaining light on his feet. As the lip begins to throw him forwards, he needs to spot his landing and rotate his hips and shoulders towards the beach. This is where many surfers come unstuck and end up free-falling. Keeping low, focusing on the landing, and compressing are key to completing the maneuver.
✅ What next? - Whilst this wave doesn’t offer Pep another section, it’s important to note that had he opted to go down and around instead of up and over he wouldn’t have enough speed to even attempt the next maneuver.

What’s stopping you from scoring waves like this?
Perhaps it’s your technique? Your ability to read waves? Your positioning in the lineup? Your confidence in bigger, hollower surf? Or maybe it’s the fact you rarely get the chance to surf waves of this quality.. if ever!
If you relate to any of the points above, a Renegade coaching trip is for you.
Improve more in 10-days than you would over years at home thanks to consistent, progression-friendly surf, elite level in-water coaching, and daily video analysis sessions.
There truly is no better way to take your surfing to the next level.
