Half-term adventure perhaps?

The Edge Aerial Adventure is one of the latest attractions to open in Bridlington. The high ropes course is described as offering "a stress-free, fun-filled challenge for all ability levels".

This looks good fun if you have a head for heights!

Today is the start of this weekend's Walking the Wolds Walking and History mini festival.

We will be joining the circular walk in the Wolds starting from the village of Thixendale this afternoon, back to Seaways Cafe Fridaythorpe for a pie and peas supper then followed by a talk about the geology and archaeology of the Yorkshire Wolds.

It has been an exciting day in Garton on the Wolds today as our village church St Michael & All Angels provided a very impressive setting for a forthcoming edition of BBC Songs of Praise . We will keep you posted when it will be broadcast in the next few weeks/months. If you have stayed at Church Farm Cottages before you may spot a familiar face! It was actually a very enjoyable evening, and if I say so myself I think we sounded pretty good!

Although our cottages are in East Yorkshire, for a contrasting landscape you don't have to drive too far to visit many of the picturesque villages and wonderful countryside just over the border in North Yorkshire.

September is a great time to visit the North York Moors National Park when the moorland is still covered in purple heather. The pretty village of Hutton-le-hole and the Ryedale Folk Museum is one of our favourites. The museum is open until mid November.

Dalby Forest offers a number of walking and cycling trails for all abilities, or you can enjoy a leisurely drive and picnic perhaps through the 8500 acres of forest.

Then there's the lovely small town of Helmsley with lots of interesting independent shops, not to mention a great choice of tea rooms and cafes. If you like gardens, don't miss the historic Helmsley Walled Garden which is open through to December.

This weekend we enjoyed a lovely walk around Millington Pastures, a very scenic part of the Yorkshire Wolds with a few inclines here and there, but well worth the effort for some stunning views.

Just above Millington Wood you will find the start of a series of 11 carved English oak tethering posts which follow a route through the pastures and when read in sequence spell GAIT IN WOLDS.

Nowadays the term "gait" usually refers to a persons or animals pattern of walking, particularly a horse's or dog's gait. But before land was enclosed by fencing, a gait referred to a measure of common pasture land sufficient to graze a certain quota of animals, for example six sheep or four ewes with lambs. A gait is a north of England equivalent to a "stint", and pastures which were stinted were known as stinted pastures.

After our walk we headed to the aptly named The Gait Inn, Millington in the village. Their Sunday lunches are highly recommended!

The Acer tree in the courtyard is just beginning to show signs of autumn, which has prompted me into launching our Autumn Laid-back Weekends available during October and November.

For a modest additional charge for up to two guests in either The Nook or our dog-friendly Granary, we are offering the flexibility to arrive early afternoon on a Friday with a leisurely later departure on a Sunday afternoon, giving you the chance to make the most of a two night weekend break in the Wolds whether you like to head to the coast, do a little sightseeing, walks in the country or just sat watching the world go by with a latte!

We've noticed on our recent walks it seems to be a good year for sloes with many appearing ripe and ready to pick already. Traditionally they are picked after the first frost in autumn or early winter, as the cold weather helps to split the skins and release the juice, ideal for making sloe gin.

There are some lovely ripe berries on our mulberry tree ready for picking. They make a good crumble, but this year we will be making some mulberry gin and saving it for next summer's Walking the Wolds Gin Fest! More details to follow.

Today we take a look at Foldyard Cottage at Church Farm Cottages

A "foldyard" is actually an enclosure for sheep and cattle, but don't worry you won't have to share, as what used to be the foldyard is now the courtyard garden where you can sit and relax and enjoy meals al fresco.

Foldyard Cottage sleeps up to 4 guests with two bedrooms, each of which can be a choice of superking or twin beds. 4 STAR GOLD Visit England rating and dog friendly too.

Today the spotlight is on one of our one bedroom cottages The Granary which as the name suggests has been converted from the former grain store at Church Farm Cottages.

The 4 STAR GOLD dog friendly accommodation is a firm favourite with many of our guests as it has lovely peaceful views across our grass paddock and offers a great base to return to after a days sightseeing or exploring the wonderful Yorkshire Wolds.

Weekly lets and short breaks of 2 nights or more are available all year round in The Granary.

Nell and I enjoyed a lovely group walk with Walking the Wolds this morning at Fraisthorpe Beach. Cooler temperatures and lots of space for all the doggies to have a good run around.

It's good to know our four legged best friends get a lovely welcome at Sledmere ...

There's lots of wide, open space for walks at Sledmere, and we love to welcome four-legged friends! We have lots of regular canine visitors - so much so that some of our staff know them by name!

Dogs on leads are very welcome in the Grounds here, and we allow them in the terrace area of the Coach House Cafe.

If you're visiting and want to bring along your dog - we'd love to see them! We even have dog ice cream on sale too if you're in need of a treat!

With the exception of assistance dogs, we do not permit dogs in the Adventure Play Area, Cafe, Farm Shop or the House.

Church Farm Cottages get a mention in today's Walking the Wolds blog about the Yorkshire Wolds Way, with inspiring ideas if you would like to walk some sections of this 79 mile national trail during your holiday. Or if you are up for a challenge and would like to complete the whole trail over the course of a few days or longer, our cottages are situated within a few miles of the mid way point of the route at Fridaythorpe, providing a comfortable base to come back to each day. Find out more by visiting the Walking the Wolds website ...

The Yorkshire Wolds Way National Trail is such a beautiful route and Bill and I have done lots of sections of it on many of our walks. But if you want to stay in the Wolds with one of our great dog-friendly partners such as Church Farm Cottages then you could plan your whole holiday around walking it. There are great sections from Goodmanham to Millington (8 1/2 miles) via historic Londesbrough and Nunburnholme; from Millington the Thixendale (12 miles) where you can also take in "Time and Flow" one of the fabulous WANDER artworks dotted around the Wolds; and then Thixendale to Sherburn (19 miles) which goes through the amazing deserted medieval village of Wharram Percy.
There is so much to see and do including 15 of our circular walks that contain sections of this excellent National Trail (and all dog friendly!) See our blog today for more - www.walkingthewolds.co.uk/choose-a-walk

Useful to know ...

It's that time of year again. The summer holidays are here and we don't want to see them spoiled through a lack of local knowledge.

These little critters bury themsleves in the sand and the sting from their dorsal fin, should you stand on one, is a holiday souvenir that you won't forget in a hurry.

It's excruciating!

Wear beach shoes! Especailly if the tide is more than half way out. Weever fish are found on all UK beaches.

When the sunshine returns ... we are just a stone's throw from a number of lovely beaches and coastal towns along the Yorkshire coast with the nearest being Bridlington and Fraisthorpe. Filey and Scarborough are a little further up the coast with numerous bays in between such as Hunmanby Gap and Cayton Bay.

The beaches at Fraisthorpe and Hunmanby Gap are dog friendly all year round much to Nell's delight!
