Today is and whilst we love our pets every day of the year, there are times when we realise just how much they mean to us.

In the past week alone we have heard about two few very tragic incidents locally involving much loved family dogs whilst out on a walk. Please be careful if you are unsure of walking routes where there may be potential hazards ahead, and of course always keep dogs on leads if you are walking along some of our fantastic coastal paths near cliff edges.

A Grand Day Out at Dalby Forest ...

We were pleasantly surprised on our recent visit to Forestry England Dalby to find the toll charges have recently changed, which is great news if you just want to enjoy a drive through the forest or a short walk. Charges are now from £3 for an hour (up to 30 minutes free) then £15 for 4 hours or all day per vehicle all year round (the all day charge has actually increased). With many walking, cycling and running trails for all ages and abilities, a Go Ape course, Visitor Centre and much more, Dalby Forest offers a great day out for all the family.

Enjoy Forest Walkies with Wallace and Gromit, and little ones can follow the new Stick Man Trail.

With 8500 acres of forest and interesting smells to explore, Nell stays firmly on the lead!

A romantic legend for Valentine's weekend!

If you take the ancient single track road from Pickering to Egton Bridge you will come across an old pack horse bridge on the edge of the village of Glaisdale. This is a very scenic drive in the North York Moors National Park (but only if weather and road conditions permit).

The pack horse bridge is known as Beggar's Bridge. This romantic legend goes back to the reign of Queen Elizabeth I when local lad Thomas Ferris from nearby Egton, the son of a poor sheep farmer fell in love with Agnes Richardson, the daughter of a wealthy squire from the other side of the River Esk. At the time there was no bridge and Thomas used to wade across the river to meet Agnes in secret as her father disapproved of their relationship.

Thomas declared he would leave Egton to make his wealth. The night before leaving, he was unable to say goodbye to Agnes as floods had made the river impassable. He declared he would become wealthy enough to return and build a bridge over the river. He became a sailor in Whitby, fought against the Spanish Armada and then spent time in the West Indies becoming a wealthy trader. He eventually established a shipping company and became Lord Mayor of Hull in 1620.

In 1619 Thomas stuck to his word, built the bridge and married Agnes! He hoped that by building the bridge, young lovers would no longer be parted by the river in the future.

For a friend's birthday today we headed to Flamborough Head to see the amazing colony of grey seals.

Yorkshire Wildlife Trust manages the Flamborough Cliffs Nature Reserve where the chalk cliffs also provide nesting sites for thousands of seabirds including puffins which can be seen from May to July.

As well as the wildlife and cliff top walks, there are two light houses at Flamborough Head. The original octagonal chalk tower was built in 1669 and is the only surviving light tower in England. It was designed to have a brushwood or coal fire burning on the top. Later in 1806 the lighthouse still in use today was built, and is open to the public for tours between Easter and October.

And ... Headlands cafe near the lighthouse serves excellent fish and chips!

We love the new look The Seabirds Inn in the village of Flamborough on the Yorkshire coast, serving lunch and evening meals in the restaurant or cosy bar (with 2 wood burners!) where dogs are made to feel very welcome.

Flamborough Headland is renowned for having the largest mainland seabird colony in Britain and one of the best places to see puffins between April and July. Flamborough Lighthouse which is open to visitors is just over a mile from the village.

Now you have another chance to follow his adventures along the trail in the BBC programme commissioned as part of the Hull City of Culture in 2017.
