An ancient milestone in our village inspired me to find out more about the history and origins of these roadside features. Take a look at our guest blog on the Walking the Wolds website.

Our guest blog today is by Alison of Church Farm Cottages - one of our fabulous Bill Loves Partner and someone who has been a huge supporter and helper in everything we do! Enjoy Alison’s blog this week.…….

If you have stayed in The Nook at Church Farm Cottages recently, you may have noticed a lovely little painting by local landscape artist and print maker Belinda Hazlerigg who has a studio in the village of Huggate in the Yorkshire Wolds. I love this painting of Horse Dale where we enjoy frequent walks (also a love of horses!). Belinda also runs painting and print making workshops from her studio.

- In the UK, fireworks can be as loud as 120 decibels and 85 decibels can cause damage to human ears. As you are probably aware, dogs have very sensitive hearing, so they seem even louder to them, There is research to suggest that at least 40% of dogs have phobias related to noise. So if your dog is in this group, fireworks are likely to trigger a stress response and even physically cause your dog pain in their ears. To avoid this, you could book a dog-friendly break in the Wolds. Take a look at Church Farm Cottages in Garton on the Wolds to find a peaceful break this Bonfire Weekend.

Today Nell and I joined our friend Tricia Cable on a fund raising walk for the MS Society. Tricia is hoping to walk 150 km during October as part of the My MS Woof dog walking challenge.

Nell is pictured with Tricia, and Bill from Walking the Wolds who doesn't look too impressed with how Nell is wearing her bandana!

We saw some of the best places to visit around the Yorkshire Wolds and coast on last nights episode of Matt Baker's Travels with Mum and Dad, when they visited the house and gardens at Sledmere , spotted puffins at RSPB Bempton Cliffs , went kite flying at the Country Park at Filey and enjoyed a narrow boat trip on Pocklington Canal.

If you missed it, catch it again here ...

Coming soon at Sledmere ...

The Corner Coffee Shop where dogs will be welcome!

Opening in a few weeks time, this will be next to The Woodyard shop across the road from the main entrance to Sledmere House.

Sledmere House is a short drive from our cottages and is a lovely place to visit, open all year round. It's good to know that soon there will be a dog friendly cafe to enjoy refreshments after a stroll around their dog friendly grounds and gardens.

Did you see last night's episode of Channel 4's Grand Designs with the transformation of the coastguard's station at Flamborough Head?

Tophill Low Nature Reserve also featured talking about bird safe glass used in their Reception hide.

Worth watching especially for the scenery around Flamborough Headland.

We've had our annual Visit England inspection today and we are delighted to announce that two of our cottages have now been awarded ***** 5 STAR GOLD ***** ratings.

The Plovery and The Nook previously had 5 Star ratings but with one or two tweaks and improvements here and there they are now worthy of the additional Gold status, which means they both sit at the top of the 5 Star bracket.

Foldyard Cottage and The Granary both retain their 4 STAR GOLD ratings simply because the rooms are not as spacious as in The Plovery and The Nook.
