Working with local steel fabrication company, Iron Designs, the Pataross team designed a contemporary steel staircase to be the center piece for a house on the South Coast.
Although the finish staircase looks simple and elegant, the design and construction was pretty complicated! A large steel beam was set into the brick wall (now covered in decorative polished plaster). Opposite this a similar steel beam rests on a concrete slab on the ground floor and a timber frame on the landing. Steel bars, 2 per tread, go from the hidden beam, through the timber treads and are screwed into the exposed steel beam.
The junction between tread and wall is as small as possible, giving the allusion of weightlessness. At night, uplights shine from floor level to the ceiling across the silver wall, highlighting the gap between tread and wall.
The steel has been shot blasted and lacquered. The wooden treads are veneered with 'Fumed Oak' which has been lightly oiled.
10mm steel rods rise from the steel beam all the way to the ceiling where they are fixed to a hidden metal beam. The longest steel rod is over 5 meters!
