Whether you're an architecture student, keen to hear first hand what a career as an Architect is really like, or an Architect in practice, keen to know how the next generation will enrich your practice, you are welcome to join us for our Christmas Collab networking event.

The Sheffield Society of Architects invites students and professionals to take part in a networking event to take place at HLM's brand new ground floor welcome space in the heart of our city. This social is designed to engage both students and professionals in discussion about the future of architecture, architectural education, what employees will demand of students and what students entering the profession will demand of their practice.

Both Sheffield Hallam University students and The University of Sheffield students (as well as any other school of architecture outside of Sheffield) are encouraged to attend. Academics and professionals are also encouraged to join the discussion, and are integral to the event's success.

SSA intend to support the next generation of Architects, and better prepare them for the next stage of their journey. Architects are invited from a broad spectrum to provide variety across practice sizes, specialisms, building typologies, routes to practice, age, gender, ethnicity, sexuality and ability, amongst other qualities. The format of the evening is open and casual, intended to provide a fun and engaging atmosphere to encourage honest and frank conversations.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Why not join our friends at SHU next Thursday (5.30-7pm May 2nd) for a free presentation by Richard Neutras' son Raymond about his father's practice, 'Survival Through Design' and it's relevance to the world today.

You can sign up through the link in our bio or here:

Richard Neutra (1890-1970) is one of the most prominent architects of the 20th century. He designed over 500 building projects that include some of the worlds’ most iconic buildings.

He also wrote many books during his life but many recognise ‘Survival Through Design’ (1954) as his landmark publication which is a compilation of essays providing insights far ahead of their time. His books are based on how humans have been so self-destructive in the creation of the built environment.

Richard Neutra established the Neutra Institute, a non-profit organisation in 1962. Now Richard’s youngest son Raymond is president of the Institute, its mission to preserve and use the Neutra legacy to promote creative research and design that benefits people and the planet.

Raymond is retired after a public health career in environmental medicine and epidemiology at several universities and the California Department of Public Health. Raymond’s background as a medic involved the application of science to health problems and in pursuit of continuing his father’s legacy, he has evolved this thinking through a scientific and biological approach to architecture.

Fancy trying another of the beginning with 'arch' careers and helping to be an archaeologist for the day at Sheffield Castle?

Then why not join Wessex Archaeology to participate in the dig, between Monday 8th April to Wednesday 5th June.

This is a unique opportunity to experience a live archaeological site, get hands on and learn about Sheffield’s history. The Castlegate area has changed dramatically over hundreds or years from castle to slaughterhouses, bowling green to steel works, and from Sheffield market to its current state. The site is now moving on to an exciting new chapter and work is underway to redevelop the area into a park.

Booking is essential (see the link in our bio). We recommend booking early to secure your spot! Opportunities will be released in batches, and we have currently released spaces in April. Check back later if you’ve missed out.
