Exceedingly fine beer

Welcome to Summer in Winter - our second new beer of 2024!

The idea for the beer was a long distance collab between Swannay Brewery and part of the Swannay family, Harvey, who went to New Zealand snowboarding in 2019 and pretty much never came back.

As Harvey gets back into his summer habits of paddle boarding, running and hiking; here in Orkney we batten down the hatches for westerly gales and get outside when we can.

We love our Island Hopping - a quasi NZ pale ale - and love NZ hops generally. So we came up with a recipe to showcase some New Zealand hops varieties we don’t often use, including the luscious Nectaron (thanks Charles Faram).

The beer's aromas and flavours remind us of summer; the summer that is now dawning in New Zealand. But we brewed this beer in the short winter days of Orkney. Hence, Summer in Winter.

This is our first intentionally hazy beer, despite the fact it’s been through our brand new centrifuge.

We hope you enjoy the new flavours, and we look forward to brewing a lot more new beers in 2025.

Super quote in the days forecast
"With each day of gales the sea gets bigger, the island gets smaller".

Friday's weather for Orkney - A low pressure system to the north-west of the UK moves east, bringing westerly winds while a band of rain moves south-east across the country.

Today will start cloudy with spells of rain. Soon the cloud will turn patchy with a mix of sunshine and blustery showers. Temperatures will rise to 8 Celsius, that's 46 Fahrenheit. Southerly winds to start, veering westerly at force 5 to 6. Rough seas to the north and west, moderate elsewhere.

Tonight thick cloud will build in from the west, bringing blustery showers. Temperatures will dip down to 5 Celsius, that's 41 Fahrenheit. Westerlies initially, backing to southerlies later on. winds at force 4 to 5, touching 6 at times. Very rough seas for to the north and west, moderate elsewhere.

Tomorrow will be a stormy day, with outbreaks of rain and strong winds throughout. A Met Office yellow warning of high winds has been issued. Temperatures will reach 8 Celsius, that's 46 Fahrenheit. South-westerly winds force 6 to 7 in the morning, strengthening to force 9 to 10. Very rough seas for most in the morning, becoming very high in the north and west in the afternoon.

Looking ahead, Sunday will be another wet and windy day, with conditions turning more settled towards Monday.

Widespread travel disruption is expected at the weekend so do check ahead before you travel.

Today’s dramatic weather picture comes from the Papay Ranger, Jonathan Ford, of St Boniface Kirk in Papa Westray. Jonathan says with each day of gales, the seas get bigger. The island smaller.

The barriers in Winter…..

The barriers in Winter…..

A motion to get the Barriers back on Orkney Islands Council's agenda in an attempt to fix the problem of wave overtopping has been defeated.

Councillor Gillian Skuse had brought the motion, which called on members to authorise consultants to update prices from 2014, and make a recommendation for a preferred option, but an amendment from Councillor Heather Woodbridge was backed at a meeting of the full council.

The OIC leader's proposal saw the status quo remain, which says no further studies should be undertaken by the local authority, and that officials should continue to explore getting financial support for the issue from the Scottish Government.

We'll have more on this tomorrow morning at 7.30am.
