Döhle Yachts has partnered with Yacht Carbon Offset to continue our commitment to carbon offsetting.

Unavoidable business-related flight emissions will now be calculated quarterly and offset via Yacht Carbon Offset and their excellent carbon reduction projects.

This quarter’s focus will be on the Gujurat Wind Project in India. The primary role of the project is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by displacing an equivalent amount of electricity that would have otherwise been generated by fossil fuel generators. The project also helps to reduce the air pollution in the region due to the reduced fossil fuel consumption.

We are delighted to announce our sponsorship of the Pearls of Wisdom Women’s Afternoon Tea event on Friday, 8th April at The Shard in London.

Pearls of Wisdom aims to help women going into, working in or leaving the yachting industry, and to create a community to act as a source of honesty about what women face when choosing life at sea or within the industry.

Sally Aston, Head of Client Relations at Döhle Yachts, explains, “The first event was fantastic because there was a good balance of shore-based professionals and current crew in attendance. It provided a space to get together, network and share advice on what career opportunities exist for those women who are looking to transition into shore-based jobs.”

Pearls of Wisdom hopes to highlight the value of promoting women in yachting and help them transition ashore and succeed in their careers.

Döhle Yachts is pleased to announce its support of www.yachtcrewhelp.org via our very own Brendan O’Shannassy’s upcoming Extreme Leaders challenge in Spitsbergen.

The Extreme Leaders, led by Alan Chambers MBE and former soldier and star of Who Dares Wins, Jason Fox, develop leadership by taking participants far past their comfort zones. The Spitsbergen Pursuit Challenge involves crossing the frozen Norwegian island, trekking on skis, and towing 70kg sleds ‘pulks’ in a frozen land where polar bears outnumber human residents and temperatures dip to -40 degrees Celsius.

The International Seafarers’ Welfare and Assistance Network (ISWAN) set up the free, confidential, 24-hour helpline Yacht Crew Help to make sure the men and women working on superyachts can easily access support when life gets tough.

Brendan explains, “I know the helpline makes a huge difference but I also know it requires funding to operate. My days trekking across the ice are dedicated to all the yacht crew out there working hard each day to keep the yachts in operation.”

If you would also like to donate, please click the following JustGiving link: https://tinyurl.com/yc8pt57k. 100% of donations go to Yacht Crew Help and all costs for the trip are paid personally.

In 2017, Döhle Yachts became the first yacht management company to support cadets enrolled at the prestigious Warsash Maritime Academy. Our newest cadets, Will Mellor and Joe Parrett, have updated us on their progress.

Will: “Having had a successful first sea phase, we were excited to return to college for our first in-person lectures of our cadetship. Within phase 3, we studied Advanced Navigation and Bridge Management modules that build on phase 1, attained a signals certificate, and successfully undertook our ECDIS and NAEST(O) training at the Warsash Maritime Simulation Centre.”

Joe: “In addition to our academic studies, Will and I were pleased to complete our RYA Power Boat Level 2, Personal Watercraft, and Tender Operator courses this phase. It was great to be on the water learning practical skills that will come in use on future ship appointments. Will and I would like to thank Döhle Yachts for this opportunity. We are now looking forward to our phase 4 ship placements and all that the new year brings.”

06/07/2021

0330 BST, Tuesday 6th July – The Ocean Sheroes have smashed the Guinness World Record for the fastest all-female four to row 2,400 nautical miles, Mid-Pacific route East to West (Open Class) from San Francisco to Hawaii in a time of 35 days, 14 hours and 32 minutes. They also become the first all British four to complete the Great Pacific Race.

One of the toughest endurance challenges on earth, the Ocean Sheroes - Bella Collins (Falmouth, Cornwall), Purusha Gordon (Luckington, Wiltshire), Mary Sutherland (Portsmouth, Hampshire) and Lily Lower (Burnham on Crouch, Essex) - have been pushed to their limits, rowing 2 hours on 2 hours off, 24/7 in brutal conditions of 30ft waves and gusts of wind reaching 47mph. Despite this, they have obliterated the previous world record of 50 days, 8 hours and 14 minutes by 14 days.

Since its launch in 2014, only 22 teams have ever completed the Great Pacific Race, rowing 2,400 nautical miles from San Francisco to Hawaii, with only two four-person, all female teams reaching the finish line. To put this in perspective, over 4,000 people have climbed Mt Everest, 1,604 have wintered in the South Pole and 566 people have been to space.

For P (Purusha), mum of two young boys Harry and Alfie, this was more than just a record, “Achieving the record was something I had hung my hat on for a while as a definition of success. Halfway through the row, I realised the record was just a small part of it. To cross an ocean by human power alone and to cross waters never chartered before, at times at the mercy of Mother Nature, was a privilege and the most incredible adventure of a lifetime. Whilst the certificate will hang on the wall, it’s the experience, stories and learnings that will continue to shape me for the better. I hope, I can inspire other mums and women out there to be brave, say yes and believe they can too.”

Lily Lower shares the highs and lows “Whilst the nightshifts were super tough and when the waves were hitting us from all angles in the pitch black, the incredible sunsets, moonrises and surfing down the waves made up for it.”

Bella Collins commented, “Sharing another ocean crossing with my best friend and brother Angus was an absolute privilege. He’s my biggest supporter and I couldn’t do it without him. It’s an experience that bonds us beyond anything else! No plans for another adventure... I think we both need to rest and recover now!”

When asked what the secret of the team success was, Mary Sutherland said “Resilience and being goal focused is key, along with knowing your team’s capabilities and how hard you can push them. These ladies didn’t disappoint. We spent a lot of time learning each other’s motivations, personal goals and personalities, which is important living in such close quarters and intense conditions. Throw in a general ‘get it done’ attitude and you have a recipe for great things. My personal expectations of what our team could achieve was around the 40 mark and I’m so happy to have blown that out of the water, but we worked hard for our achievements.”

The Ocean Sheroes are on a mission to raise £60,000 for the Seabin Project. The Seabin 6.0 is a revolution in ocean cleaning technology, helping to create cleaner oceans with healthier marine life. The Seabin catches an estimated 1.5 tonnes of marine debris per year (depending on weather and debris volumes) including micro plastics down to 2 mm small, microfibres, fuel and oil. https://uk.gofundme.com/f/ocean-sheroes-for-the-seabin-project

Döhle Yachts’ co-sponsored yacht cadet programme, supporting cadets enrolled at the prestigious Warsash Maritime Academy, has recently taken on its newest representatives, Will Mellor and Joe Parrett.

The programme aims to offer support, structure and opportunities for young people at the beginning of their maritime careers. Will and Joe have been discussing their first impressions.

Will: “Leaving the ‘9-5’ behind and adopting a mainly self-motivated study regime took me back at first. Likewise, I had to practice my handwriting again, given my reliance on typing had almost retired this fundamental skill. However, once I had my feet under the desk, I was able to fully engage and succeed in my studies, albeit via Microsoft Teams for the entirety of our phase one. First phase topics included Ocean Navigation, Coastal Navigation, Ship Stability and Construction, Ship Operations and Bridge Management.”

Joe: “It is remarkable how fast phase one has gone and there is so much to learn in a relatively short period of time; so, we had to hit the ground running. The syllabus topics are all key components to obtaining the Officer of the Watch CoC (Unlimited). My favourite lecture had to be coastal navigation, in which we studied chartwork, tides and the rules of the road. From my sailing background, it was fascinating to practice with real charts and study COLREGS in depth. I could finally piece together my existing knowledge to reach a thorough understanding of navigating coastal passages.

Will is currently at sea on Saga Cruises’ Spirit of Adventure. He has reported back that he is thoroughly enjoying his time on board and will remain at sea before returning to college at the end of August.

Will (prior to joining): “I expect to work mainly on deck, conducting tasks ranging from painting and chipping, polishing and exterior maintenance, with plans to join the bridge team later in my sea phase. I am excited to witness first-hand the efforts that are necessary to prepare a ship for her first set of passengers.”

Joe has recently spent three weeks on THV Patricia, which undertakes aid to navigation maintenance work, towing and wreck location, and is currently on Pelican of London, a tall ship, enjoying a completely different experience.

Joe: “I am really enjoying my sea time so far; it’s great putting the theory we have learnt at college into practice. For learning, a day at sea is worth a week in college. I feel very optimistic for the year ahead and look forward to wherever I may travel.”

Döhle Yachts is committed to our cadetship programme and welcome further applicants. Details of the Warsash cadetship programmes can be found on the Chiltern Maritime website: https://www.chilternmaritime.com/partner/warsash-maritime-academy

Richie Blake, MD of Döhle Yachts, noted: “We are very proud of our cadetship programme and it is a cause we are dedicated to. We work to support the cadets throughout and, crucially, arrange yacht placements with real-world experience for them.”
