It's that time of year again! The Christmas Day swims are back!

A Christmas Day plunge in Cornwall is an exhilarating tradition! Many coastal communities have festive swims, where brave (or slightly bonkers!) souls take a chilly dip in the sea, often dressed in Santa hats or costumes. These events typically mix charity fundraisers and good-hearted holiday fun, drawing locals and visitors alike.

So, if you are one of those brave (or slightly bonkers) types who want to indulge in one of the vigorous swims in the sea this festive season, and you're not quite sure where to actually take the plunge this year, let us give you a few ideas.

Cornwall has many unofficially organised traditional swims (there are no websites or Facebook groups), but if you're staying in the area, they are worth watching!

Christmas Day: Coverack, Falmouth, Sennen, Bude, Polzeath, St Agnes, Porthtowan, Watergate Bay, Hayle Bay, and Cadgwith Cove.

Boxing Day: Poldhu, Charlestown, Porthminster, Perranporth, and Porthminster.

New Year’s Day: Newquay, Gorran, Looe, and Tintagel

If you are going to take part in one of these swims, stay safe and we wish you the best of luck. If you're going to watch the fun, wrap up warm.

If you're planning to join in this year, here are some top tips:
• Take your time getting in and don’t stay in too long
• Woolly hats are a cold swimmer’s best friend
• Wear all the layers when you get out and take your fluffiest beach towel – dry robes are ideal
• Hot water bottles are a great way to warm up
• Get stuck into some sugary food and a hot drink to replenish your energy – mulled wine, hot chocolate and mince pies always go down well

Bring festive vibes—the sillier the outfit, the better!

Surfing in North Cornwall is an absolute dream!
Winter can be a great time to surf in Cornwall, with consistent swells and quieter beaches. The best time to surf in Cornwall depends on your skill level and preferences, but autumn and winter are generally considered the best time for optimal conditions.

The stunning coastline is dotted with beaches like Polzeath, Fistral, and Watergate Bay, all renowned for their consistent surf and breathtaking views.

Here’s what makes North Cornwall a surfing hotspot:
🌊 Variety of Breaks: Whether you prefer larger beaches or smaller coves, there's plenty to choose from.
🏄‍♂️ Friendly Vibes: The local surf scene is welcoming, with plenty of surf schools and rental shops for newbies.
🌅 Natural Beauty: Even if you're not hitting the waves, the rugged cliffs and golden sands make it worth the trip.
🍻 Après Surf: After a session, relax at one of the many cosy pubs or beach cafes for some hearty Cornish food and drink.

When surfing in the winter, you should be aware of the following:
🌡Water temperatures can be very cold, so you might need a thicker wetsuit, gloves, and booties.
🌊Larger waves and stronger currents can be dangerous, especially for less experienced surfers.

Have you seen the creative rock art by Harry Maddox of rocks up? Here are a few of his mind blowing rock sculptures that have been meticulously put together on our Cornish shores.

Asked why he dismantles his art, he explains the main reason is the safety of anyone or any animal that may come close. Some of the rocks he uses are particularly heavy and could do a considerable amount of damage,

The time frame for these creations are usually an hour or so (whilst his non-driving wife does the shopping). Harry gets to work with the stones, takes a photo or two and then dismantles it.

Occasionally we are lucky enough to see his art work pop up on the beach at Watergate Bay but even if we're not there in person, he often showcases his talent on Facebook. Well done Harry!

Porth Beach (TR7 3NH), nestled between Newquay and Watergate Bay, is a stunning and award-winning destination renowned for its golden sands and turquoise waters. Sheltered by two impressive headlands, this picturesque beach is a favourite among visitors, locals, and surfers throughout the year.

In 2024, Porth Beach proudly earned the prestigious Seaside Award, recognizing its exceptional commitment to environmental care, water quality, and safety standards.

Perched above Porth Beach is Porth Island, also known as Trevelgue Head, a significant Newquay landmark with a history stretching back to the Mesolithic period, around 8,000 years ago. Extensive archaeological excavations in 1939 uncovered fascinating remnants, including evidence of an Iron Age promontory fort, two Bronze Age round barrows, and the foundations of several large roundhouses.

Features of Porth Beach include:
Expansive Sands - At low tide, the beach reveals a vast stretch of soft sand, perfect for sunbathing, beach games, and exploring rock pools.
Safe Swimming - The relatively sheltered waters make it an ideal spot for swimming, especially for families with young children. during the summer season, there are lifeguard patrols.
Coastal Walks—The South West Coast Path runs nearby, offering stunning views of the rugged coastline. Walks to Trevelgue Head are an absolute must for history and nature enthusiasts.
Amenities - There's a nearby café, and public toilets for a safe and comfortable visit.

Nearby Attractions:
Newquay Town - Just a short drive away, offering shops, restaurants, and other beaches like Fistral and Towan.
Watergate Bay - Another gorgeous beach for surfing and dining, located a little further north.
Bedruthan Steps - A dramatic section of the coast with towering sea stacks and breathtaking views.

It's a wonderful destination for a relaxing day out or a longer holiday in Cornwall.

We have various self-catering accommodation in Porth.

If you missed the interesting documentary on ST AGNES in north Cornwall featured on BBC2' "Villages by the Sea" with Ben Robinson, you've still got time to catch up on iPlayer.

Ben discovers how a Cornish gem of a village became world-famous for its tin. He also looks at some medieval technology in action at one of the oldest tin refineries in Britain and he chats to Chris Whitworth, a local doctor who consults his ancestor's 150 year old diary for evidence of past ailments.

With beautiful aeriel photography it's a fascinating look at this historic and picturesque village which, unlike Padstow and St Ives, has avoided the same influx of visitors simply beause the heart of the village is 3/4 mile from the beach.

Watch it when you have time and add St Agnes to your list of places to visit on your next Cornwall holiday.

It may be mid-December now but spring isn't far away!

It's also worth remembering Cornwall boasts the UK's only area of sub-tropical climate. Palm trees are commonly seen and there's a wonderful mix of botanical gardens:

📍 Lost Gardens of Heligan (image credit Toby Strong)
📍 Trebah Garden
📍 Trewithen Garden
📍 Glendurgan Garden
📍 Lanhydrock
📍 Trewidden
📍 Tregothnan

Spring is the best time to explore Cornwall's gardens - the early arrival of spring, the blooming of the magnificent magnolias and colourful rhododendrons and the diverse array of flowers. With fewer crowds, Cornwall in the spring offers a more tranquil experience with the added benefit of temperatures which are often much milder than the rest of the country.

Book a visit this spring and stay in quality 4-star accommodation.

Walk to Cornwall's Highest Point

Brown W***y, the highest point in Cornwall, is a prominent hill on Bodmin Moor, which itself is an area of outstanding natural beauty. The name comes possibly from the Cornish, Bronn Wennili, meaning "hill of swallows" or from Bronn Ewhella, meaning "highest hill."

It's about 2½ miles (4 kilometres) northwest of Bolventor and 4 miles (6 kilometres) southeast of Camelford.

The walk to Brown W***y typically starts from a large, free car park at the base of Roughtor, the second-highest peak in Cornwall. Many hikers combine the two for a scenic and rewarding trek. Along the way, you might encounter wild ponies, sheep, and the occasional buzzard soaring overhead. The path is challenging in places, but manageable for most. NB: Sturday footwear is a must.

If you prefer to head straight to Cornwall's highest point, take the trail from the car park that runs between Roughtor on your right and Showery Tor on your left, with Maiden Tor directly ahead. Bear right, descend to the ford over the De Lank River, and follow the clear path up to Brown W***y.

If you feel like a longer adventure, you can do an 8-mile circular walk back to the car park via Garrow and King Arthur's Hall. However, you'll need an OS Explorer Map 109 and a compass for this route. Most visitors opt to retrace their steps for a shorter 5-mile round trip.

Whichever walk you choose, the weather might not be guaranteed, but the views are spectacular.
