The Our Tribe Travels story starts back in 2008 when my husband and I received a joint offer to work in Mumbai, India as Media Directors at an advertising agency. As keen travelers, this opportunity was just too good to overlook. After 16 months of having our senses assaulted 24/7, 365 as we worked, lived, and travelled the sub-cont

inent, I fell pregnant with our son. As nervous, first time parents, we made a decision to relocate back to the UK in order to have our child. Soon enough it became clear that we didn’t have closure on our Asian adventure (we missed both the vibrancy and the weather!), so after a few months of deliberating we decided to take the bull by the horns, follow our gut instinct and leave the UK. Only this time, with an 11-month old in tow. We packed our life into boxes, bought a return ticket to Singapore and had ‘The Rough Guide to SE Asia’ tucked in our back pocket. We knew we were going to be able to enjoy quality time as a family, we had work contacts line up interviews, but we were open to where we would end up. I kept a blog over the next seven months which was in effect a diary of the highs, lows and experiences of backpacking around South East Asia with a baby. This was a topic we could find very little resources or information on when planning the trip. We saw that our collective experiences and top tips were becoming a platform for others who were considering their own adventure. Eventually taking up roles in Malaysia, life once again gave us the opportunity to travel and explore other countries whilst continuing to log suggestions and practical advice. We backpacked extensively around Sri Lanka and India, trekked up mountains in Nepal (yes it is feasible with kids) and spent many long weekends discovering beautiful tropical islands. We were often told we were “brave”, “crazy” or occasionally “inspiring”. It became my mission to help those who found our adventures inspiring to overcome their fears, and to facilitate them traveling confidently and independently with their own tribes. I realised this was too much of a task for one person, but if I could create a focal point for like-minded families, then we could all contribute to a body of knowledge which would in turn help others as we helped ourselves. Our Tribe Travels has evolved into a community of families who love independent travel and seek to inspire and assist each other in their explorations.

Our last chat with Natty was so popular she has kindly agreed to come back and share her tips for planning a road trip in Jamaica.

Laidback vibe, beautiful beaches, sunshine and a few cocktails :)

We'll be covering Natty's budget for the trip, ease of getting around by car, safety, accommodation and tips on booking, and the highlights of the trip.

If you can't make it, pop your name in the comments, and I'll link you to the recording.

I can't wait. See you there, and thanks again, Natty.

・・・
I was recently asked what was the toughest situation we had traveling during covid. There was one missed flight and a few almost missed flights, however getting lockdown in Colombia was definitely the biggest challenge.

We were out to breakfast on a Saturday morning in what we thought was just a very, very popular spot. The food took over two hours to receive and the place was body to body. When we finished our meal, the place cleared out into a ghost town, both the restaurants and the streets.

Not knowing anything that was happening, we headed for a walk on the beach only to be abruptly turned around, and told we immediately needed to return to our indoor accommodations until 5am the following day.

That weekend Colombia issued a mandatory lockdown from noon-5am on Sat and Sunday. And this isn’t a US kind of lockdown where you can go out and get groceries or walk around, this was OG Italy style where you can’t leave your home. I know this is also shocking, but Colombia also doesn’t offer peapod or Amazon fresh, so you are kind of stuck with what you have in your fridge.

Thank goodness we got groceries the night prior (especially lots of drinking water) but full lockdown was extremely rough, and we couldn’t find ANY information online about how long this was planning to last. (And I speak good enough Spanish to translate any local news)

We worked the system and the following day at 10am we headed to the local Hilton hotel, where we were confined to property but were allowed to use the pools and restaurants as we pleased. Best investment of $90 of our entire trip!

Monday morning life returned to normal in Cartagena, only to be boarded up again Tuesday afternoon due to government protests and riots.

We were never scared and understood that situations like these are the risk you take when traveling during covid. With that being said, our next location was Medellin and the rioting was worst there and more lockdowns were predicted on the horizon.

As much as we loved the time we had in Colombia, we cut our losses, burned our tickets to our next destinations and headed home for a quick regroup before heading to Europe.

Wow, the Maldives is proving to be a popular topic, so I cannot wait to chat with Natty and find out all the details from her recent family holiday to the Maldives. Look at those photos!

We'll be finding out where the family stayed, how they made the bookings, a guide on budget, AND we'll be answering your questions. Pop questions below this post or ask them live on the day.

Natty is a budget travel lover, and I know we can learn a lot from her Maldives travel tips. This chat is going to be a good'un!

Lake Argyle

We nearly gave this place a miss as I felt it's really expensive for a picture in the infinity pool. 😂 But I am glad we did it. It is really beautiful here and a really good start to our WA adventures.

The resort has a great system going. An attendant the moment you drive in so that you can put your name on the wait list and they will give u a message when it's your turn. U also get to explore the grounds while waiting.

A few factors contributed to the reason (like we need any 🤣) we decided to go on Q's first helicopter ride here. Oh boy am I glad we went. This lake is huge and we didn't even fly over the majority of it. I'm not exactly sure if everyone (Q) enjoyed their ride as much as I do. 🤷‍♀️

Ps: I might have scarred my child for the rest of her life with the helicopter ride. 🤣 BUT that is future Jas problem. 😅

.canasians - family of the week!
・・・
When we first started our lap, Q was going through a regression at swimming. She would cry and not want to be in class. So for safety reasons we decided to get her a life jacket.

Mataranka was the start of our water adventures. She was holding onto Derec the whole time refusing to let go.

By the time we get to Lake Bennett, she was jumping off the deck of our pontoon boat.

Then this happened at Berry Springs. 🤣

I love watching her grow on this trip. Watching her confidence grow and how she learns to manage her fears and push through.

Well, hello there! I'm back online :)

It's been a quiet few weeks for me on the social media front. My son starts secondary school this week, and I figured this might be my last summer holiday with him while he's still in his boyish phase (Cue tweenager challenges).

Well, what a summer!

The weather hasn't been fantastic here in the UK, but we managed to visit for a camping trip, which resulted in the tent being blown down in the storm, plus our family favourite, a trip to .

What did you get up to, and how do you feel about travel in 2022?
