Well, itâs time for another before/after post! We have all been waiting wayyy too long. So here is a pic of our lounge when it was a school. Picture dates from the 1980âs. And here it is today after a lovely facelift â€ïž
Transformation no 2 ans another piece of history: the back garden which is at a much lower level than the house ( at par level with the facing vineyards) used to host a âprefabâ acting as 2 classrooms at times where the house used to be the village school. Itâs now a lovely pool area with lush planting and the wonderful vineyard views no longer obstructed
Another historical post but this time in before/after pictures ( who doesnât like a before/after?!). The pictures before show the facade of the house and the back before extensive renovation was undertaken after it was sold by the school/Catholic Order. A major facial lift lovingly undertaken by the previous owner David and his wife which was done while preserving the architecture and history of the house.
Continuing on from day trip near Marennes/Oléron. Fort Louvois is a great monument to visit just near the bridge leading to Oléron Island. It can be reached by foot at low tide ( wear sensible shoes! It can be slippery). The whole fort can be visited for a small fee. The great French architect Vauban is behind this fantastic fortification fortification built between 1691 and 1694, during the reign of Louis XIV, on the Chapus islet. Fantastic views over the estuary and passage over to the sea and great fun for kids ( see pics of costumes which kids can wear!). Lunch or dinner at restaurant La Cabane du Chapus is obligatory for us for tasty seafood and woaa sunset views
Ăclade de Moules, have you ever had it? We ventured near Marennes last week and had some great food, including this speciality from the Charentes Maritimes called Mussels Eclade. Mussels are placed in a large dish and covered with pine needles which are then set on fire, bringing intense flavour to the dish. Marennes has lots of oyster/seafood shacks along with La Tremblade and there is great food to be having!
More La Rochelle fun. Great aquarium for younger ones ( and not so- younger ones!). A day trip from the house, and you must include some crepes eating by the port, and maybe go up the big wheel for stunning views of the port. Or just do nothing and sit by a cafĂ© and watch the world go by. The city never disappoints â€ïž
We always recommend La Rochelle for a dayâs excursion from the house. About an hourâs drive away and a very charming city and port. Itâs busting in the summer with street concerts, boat excursions and an endless choice of restaurants and bars ( and good gelato!). Maybe fly in to La Rochelle and explore it on your way here!
A gorgeous weekend in Noirmoutier despite the storm when we arrived. So much to explore along the Atlantic coast!
Your bedroom is ready for your holiday đ«đ·. One of 7, this bedroom has fabulous views over the vineyards . Imagine waking up and opening the shutters to such a vista. You will roarrr đ. We still have availability in June and the last two weeks of July if you canât resist. Check us on https://legrandlogiscognac.com
Bordeaux un jour, Bordeaux toujours â€ïž. The city has changed so much since I first visited it 30 years ago ( gulp đ). Itâs been so lovingly restored over the years and it promises a great weekend or a day away and only about 1.5h away from the house to the city Center ( if traffic flows). On the 3rd pic you can see the ceiling of the CĂŽtĂ© du Vin ( the Wine Museum) covered in wine bottles, which is really worth a visit to learn more about wine. Definitely a must city to visit, maybe on your day back before flying back home after a stay at LGL??
Ready to sleep in? This is our biggest bedroom ( and my favorite!) at about 40m2, with great views over the vineyards. We still have availability for some weeks in May- June or September if you fancy waking there
Breakfast anyone? This is our breakfast bar at LGLâs kitchen. Croissants in the village boulangerie are so good so you only have to do about 5 min walk from the house to pick up your fresh baguettes đ„ and pastries đ„ź
We canât emphasise enough how important it is to get good professional pictures done if you are looking to represent your business, venture or ââpatrimoineâ in our case. All photos on our new website www.legrandlogiscognac.com were taken by and collaborating with Mathieu ( a local photographer) has been a pleasure. Ultra professional, a wonderful eye and âun je ne sais quoiâ that distinguishes him from many other photographers we looked at. Merci Mathieu!

New! Logo! Because sometimes Le Grand Logis can be a mouthful for non-French speakers and also because there are probably more than 10,000 Logis places in France, weâve got a new name! LGL for Le Grand Logis. As simple as that! This is a sneakpeak of how it will look on the websiteâŠ
Grey JanuaryâŠhow I long for it to be soon over to sit on the terrasse and look towards the light like on this picture â€ïž. Wonderful caption by
Even on grey autumnal days the Charentes is beautiful. This scene is so âcharentaiseâ but one could never get bored of it. A castle at every corner, and omnipresent water with the river Charentes. So very bucolic!
September has been an exciting month here! Not only because we were photo shooting the interiors of the house for a soon grand reveal website ( stay tuned!). But also because Le Grand Logis held its first painting retreat organised by the talented Paul Bell and we hope it will be the first of many!
Just found The absolut dream bike! Of course full of baguettes and electric. Just need a few fresh viennoiseries in there and life will be complete !đ
Afternoon tea anyone? France, pĂątisseries, always!
A trip to St Emilion, Wine not? Itâs a short drive from the house and a lovely village with many wine boutiques ( obviously) and so many chateaux at every corner offering wine tasting experiences. Many grand crus classĂ©s. Itâs well known so can be quite busy but you can book tours etc in advance. The Office de Tourisme can help with planning your fun.
Still some garden produce and plants at this time of year to bring back inside to embellish the day đ
Sunrise dream in the Charentes. Surely any of you would not struggle to get up early to witness such (di)vine beauty!
Second time round that this lovely cycling group is having its annual cycling retreat at Le Grand Logis and we are so glad that they loved it so much that they are returning! The house is perfectly placed to cycle from and explore hilly vineyards on â la petite reineâ. We have ample storage space for all your bikes if you are looking for a venue where to host your next cycling retreat ( bikes can also be rented from a local company you can partner with). Contact us for more info
A little escapade to Fort Boyard and lâIle d Aix is just around the corner and really make you feel like you have gone far away if not back in time! Only an hourâs drive away from the house, you can board boats from La Rochelle, la Tremblade or Bourcefranc-le-Chapus to take you there. There are no cars on Ile d Aix, only ( lots of) bikes. Itâs a small island which you can easily walk in a day and full of history. There are fortifications and many defensive buildings across the island, and itâs notably where Napoleon lived for a few days in 1815 until his exile to Ste Helene after losing at Waterloo. History aside, itâs a pretty island worth a dayâs trip if you are staying in the area!
The grass is so dry and brown at the moment here in Charentes but look at these lush green vines ready to produce soon a delicious organic Cognac
Les Hußtres ou Oui-tre for us as we love our local ones from Charentes Maritime. The Oysters from Marennes or Oléron are sensational and lots of oyster shacks are just a short drive away from Le Grand Logis. These were eaten which has a fab terrasse overlooking the Oleron bridge - check that sunset view! The Fort Louvois just next door is also a great sight which you can walk over to when the tide is down ( just like at Mont St Michel). Oh and guess what? We spotted a few 24/7 oyster vending machine by oyster producers along the coast, how crazy ( and so French!) is that?)
Life is a beach! We always recommend our guests to hop to the nearby coast and the beaches of Royan and St Georges de Didonne while staying at Le Grand Logis. Vast sandy beaches, soft white sand, and good waves too for surfing by la CĂŽte Sauvage aka the Wild Coast đđ»ââïž đđ»ââïž
It took us a bit longer to post this as anticipated but it must be the heat frying our brain and our ability to post on here! We are currently working on building our own website and we have been collaborated with the talented Monsieur Mathieu Martines to create stunning authentic photos of Le Grand Logis. More photoshooting scheduled for September. This view is just our favourite- and the reason why we fell in love with Le Grand Logis 4 years ago and launched into this adventure â€ïž
Agapanthus flowers in full bloom today to welcome our weekly holiday guests by the pool !
Bordeaux is our Paris: splendid buildings beautifully renovated in the last two decades; fun nights out; amazing food and the river banks. We love it and you will too if you come here!
Because sometimes, itâs hard to wait to share some beautiful newsâŠthese two pictures are a glimpse of the new project we are working on with and well, we are a tiny little MEGA excited about the final outcome in a few months. Watch this space, and yes, Mathieuâs got talent!
Waking up is definitely made easier when you open the shutters to this view..and zenđđ»
Some ideas for apĂ©ritif on our terrasse at LGL! When your friend is multitalented and could become a food stylist đđ»
Weâve been quiet here but itâs been tough holidaying away đŹwhile our guests enjoyed the Grand Logis this week. Getting some good inspiration for our future outdoor lounges and decoration đĄ
Did you know you could paddle-board, do water ski and other fun activities just 10 minâs walk from Le Grand Logis? đ€ our guests tried paddle boarding last weekend and loved it! Great way to entertain your kids, teenagers or yourselves on holiday while staying with us. We love it. Contact to book ahead of your stay if you can: https://www.planet-ski.com/
Our guests have had a fantastic experience organised by the one and only touring vineyards in vintage french cars and tasting the wonderful local organic cognac produced by one of our rare organic producers in the region. Fantastic flavours, a more than friendly and talented Amy . All in all an experience than any future guest at should try!
