Today is the feast day of Saint Fagan and Saint Deruvian

Traditionally, Fagan and Deruvian were chosen by Pope Eleutherius to introduce Christianity into Roman Britain at the request of Lucius, a 2nd-century ruler of the Britons. Their story appears in the 12th century works of William of Malmesbury and Geoffrey of Monmouth and was used to support the campaigns for the bishops of St Davids to be independent from Canterbury. It is presumed that the village of St Fagans near Cardiff is named after Fagan.

Today is the Chinese New Year. The Year of the Dragon.

The dragon has been a symbol of the Welsh Princes in various forms for centuries.

It was a banner with a red dragon that Henry Tudor flew on his journey towards the Battle of Bosworth in 1485 to highlight his Welsh blood in order to gain support from the Welsh.

The red dragon then appeared on the royal coat of arms of all but one of the Tudor monarchs. King Henry VIII, King Edward VI, and Queen Elizabeth I.

In 1959, the red dragon on a white and green field became the official flag of Wales.

The dragons in the picture come from St Fagans Museum, Cardiff Castle, Caerphilly Castle, and Insole Court.
