Conservation Travel Africa We offer ethical volunteer experiences and life-changing adventures.
(13)

CTA offer only responsible projects, working with reputable conservation partners across Southern Africa. Conservation Travel Africa is committed to supporting grass roots, conservation organisations throughout Southern Africa. We enable volunteers to make a positive impact to the environment, wildlife and people, with the confidence that their contribution is being used correctly. We are proud of

our small, experienced travel team - all ex-volunteers and adventurous travellers, who have visited each and every one of the projects we offer. We have lived in, worked in and breathed Africa and have a passion for responsible conservation travel. We believe that positive volunteer contributions are an essential part of conservation goals. Our volunteers join programmes that are focused on meeting a need; they must firstly be beneficial to the area, the people and the wildlife and secondly to the volunteer. We focus on the meaningful contribution which volunteers bring and each of the projects we support can proudly demonstrate their positive impact on the environment. To have a positive impact, all the projects must be run long term which is why we work hard to build programmes which are sustainable. The projects our volunteers are involved with existed prior to volunteer travel and were not set up solely to entertain travellers. As the projects have grown and developed, volunteer input helps them to progress more quickly and become more effective.

Our BRAND NEW Environmental Conservation Program in Malawi is dedicated to conserving an entire ecosystem. In addition to conservation volunteering in the Thangadzi River Conservancy AND a two-day safari into the Big 5 Majete Wildlife Reserve, volunteers get a privileged opportunity to work in Malawi's unique Elephant Marsh.

The Elephant Marsh is Malawi's own paradise, home to thousands of birds, including rare and migratory species.

This is your chance to join an innovative conservation initiative, dedicated to an entire ecosystem.

"I stayed at Omaruru for two weeks instead of the booked one week as I loved the work and it felt really meaningful and rewarding. The staff were very friendly, there was good variety in assignments, a small-sized volunteer group and there were many wildlife encounters that made this place memorable. The most unforgettable experience was watching the wild dogs feed on an impala! I felt like I had made an impact and I would definitely recommend Omaruru for a volunteer experience."

๐Ÿต Orphan season, Malawi ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ผ
Meet Alice, a vervet monkey who recently arrived at the sanctuary in Malawi, when she was just a few weeks old. Her mother was killed for bushmeat and Alice was rescued and brought to the centre for care.

๐Ÿผ Every year between November and February a large number of orphaned primates are seen at sanctuaries across Africa, and volunteers are always needed to give them the intensive care that they need.

๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿผโ€๐ŸผOrphans like Alice often need round the clock care and high levels of support. It can takes months or even longer to get them to a point where they can be placed with a troop and given a second chance at life back in the wild โ€“ where they belong.๐ŸŒด๐Ÿ’

Not for the faint-hearted! We are delighted to offer this unique opportunity to join the frontline in the fight against poaching. If you make it through the 6-week training course, you will be deployed on active anti-poaching duty on Big 5 reserves in South Africa.

When we say it's extreme, we aren't kidding! You will have daily drills, physical training and obstacle courses. You will need to be physically and mentally fit, and able to live alongside people from vastly different cultures and backgrounds.

In Malawi, meet Liwondeโ€™s latest cheetah cubs! These represent the 40th and 41st cheetah cubs to be born in Liwonde National Park since the reintroduction of cheetahs in 2017. Their mother, Ch28, has been monitored by the project since she was just a cub herself!
Liwonde National Park is a true conservation success story and is Malawi's flagship national park. In 2017, began re-establishing Liwondeโ€™s predator population by bringing back cheetah, which had been absent from the park for a century. This was followed in 2018 by a founder population of lion. In 2019, 17 black rhino were relocated from South Africa to Liwonde, in one of the largest international black rhino translocations in history.
Liwonde has become a haven for wildlife and a valuable asset for Malawi and its people. Our research projects inform, guide and evaluate โ€™s conservation efforts.
Volunteers on this project do not need to be researchers or have any field experience. You will assist with endangered species monitoring, focusing on cheetahs, lions, elephants and rhinos, you will undertake game counts and surveys and learn to do data entry and analysis.

๐Ÿ’ Orphan season in Malawi is approaching, and the Malawi Wildlife Sanctuary team is gearing up for their busiest time of year. And they need all the help they can get!

As the rainy season begins, the sanctuary experiences an influx of orphaned animals that require constant care. When countless rescues are needed and call-outs are frequent, having additional volunteers at the sanctuary can make an enormous impact. The more volunteers there are, the more effectively the wildlife team can carry out rescues throughout Malawi.

This is where you come in. By joining the team as a volunteer, you can make a massive difference in the early lives of these vulnerable animals.

We are offering a 10% discount on 2 and 3 week stays between October and January and a 15% discount on stays of 4 weeks or more.

Get in touch now and together we can make a real difference ๐Ÿค.

Desert elephants! What makes them so special and unique?

๐Ÿ˜ Desert elephants are not a distinct species but are African savannah elephants with unique characteristics.

African elephants are notoriously water-dependent, drink water daily and love a cooling mud bath ๐Ÿ’ฆ. Yet in the Namib desert, the elephants survive despite the low rainfall and intense heat โ˜€๏ธ. But how?

๐Ÿพ Desert elephants have bigger feet than savannah elephants - the greater surface area allows them to walk on top of sandy plains, crossing over dunes in search of food and water.
๐Ÿ•ณ Desert elephants have been seen using their trunks and legs to dig wells in dry riverbeds.
๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜ Herds of desert elephants often walk hundreds of kilometres at a time in their quest for food. One of the most substantial home ranges ever recorded was by an elephant bull, covering 10,738 square km (about the size of Gambia and half the size of Israel!)
๐Ÿ’ง Desert elephants can survive without drinking water for up to 5 days!

Volunteers on the Desert Elephant Conservation Programme will work hard on community projects to reduce the human-wildlife conflict. Additionally you'll spend half the programme tracking these amazing elephants through the desert, monitoring their behaviour and their movements.

With only around 150-350 animals remaining in Namibia, we hope that this has inspired you to join the team!

What makes us different

Conservation Travel Africa offer ethical volunteer programmes and unique, meaningful travel adventures. What makes us different? Our projects offer intimate, personal experiences, where volunteers are immersed in the host organisation and play a key role in meeting their wildlife conservation and education goals. Volunteer work has a long term impact on animals and communities, and participants have a life-changing, enriching experience.

We have a true passion for Africa and its preservation, and we recognise that positive volunteer contributions are an essential part of this goal. Our volunteers join programmes that are focused on meeting a need; they must firstly be beneficial to the area, the people and the wildlife, and secondly to the volunteer.
