Edinburgh Castle built on ‘Castle Rock’ a volcanic plug estimated to have formed over 350 million years ago. The summit of the rock is 130m above sea level and provides the solid foundation to this mighty bastion of Edinburgh Castle. There has been a Royal Castle on the rock since the 11th century and continued to be a Royal residence until 1633. The castle has played many roles; royal residence, an arsenal, a treasury, a mint, a prison, a military fortress, a national archive and the home of the Honours of Scotland - the Scottish Crown Jewels. Today it’s open to public and well worth a visit. Please note purchase tickets in advance to avoid disappointment, tickets get sold out very quickly. Castle Stalker, one of the best preserved surviving medieval tower houses in Western Scotland. It has been used as a filing location for many productions including Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
