Andy White on “Love Me Do” (1962)
Even though Ringo was already a band member, session drummer White was behind the kit on the recording of the band’s first-ever single release as The Beatles.
It’s not the most complicated song for drummers — and Ringo played it just fine on the album version — but White, at the very least, didn’t get in the way of it becoming a Top 20 hit in Britain, assuring the band would get another shot in the studio.
They would turn that shot into the smash hit “Please Please Me,” starting Beatlemania in earnest.
The song was recorded on three occasions with three different drummers - Pete Best on June 6, 1962, Ringo on September 4, 1962 and Andy White's version a week later.
The Andy White version of the track was included on The Beatles' debut UK album, Please Please Me, The Beatles' Hits EP, and subsequent album releases on which "Love Me Do" was included as well as on the first US single release in April 1964.
