Matt is a gun dog & behaviorist trainer specialising in hunt point & retrieve breeds with over 30 years experience as a Canine Instructor. Matt can help with obedience, aggression towards other dogs/people, anxiety, puppy training & mind stimulation.
Productive Steadiness Training Day yesterday looking at movement , sound and scent exercises to help the handlers gain more repetition and continuity to achieve changing the dogs conditioned response from chase to sit .
Really pleased with the progress from all handlers and dogs. I hope everyone enjoyed the session and have taken home ideas to work with
Great day today for our Retrieving on Land and Water sessions .
Lovely assortment of the HPR breeds and a Golden Retriever to add to the mix .
Good improvement made by all dogs and homework to take home for handlers .
One thing which I have noticed in my 1-2-1 training sessions with clients and the Retrieving Days we have been holding is the lack of Straight lines which is the fundamental basics for all Retrieving work . If you do not have the ability to send your dog in a straight line it will struggle with memories and blinds.
With this in mind we are going to organise some Introduction to Straight Line and Blinds workshops .

Thank you all so much for your feedback so far . It seems Steadiness and Directional work are the areas most people need help with .
Slightly short notice but a lot of people have asked for weekends and the first weekend we have is 11th and 12th May .
I will upload more information this evening but we are looking to run a Directional and Retrieving workshop on the 11th May and a Steadiness Workshop on the 12th May .

Hunting is out the question due to ground nesting birds but back to basics, steadiness, obedience, retrieving , directional training are always areas that need working on before the start of a new season .

Lovely day yesterday on our client HPR shot over .Its always a pleasure watching handler /dog combinations which have put such a lot of hard work in to their training to then experience the thrill off a hunt, point and retrieve day with their dogs .

We had a great day today at the fantastic St Hubertus Cup 2023 held at Prestwold Hall in memory of Mark Taylor
It was a difficult day for the dogs with a hard frost and heavy fog which meant scenting was difficult .
Very pleased with Vera to come overall second amongst some very strong candidates.
Thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience this is exactly the type of day which makes owning HPR’s worthwhile. I do hope the St Hubertus Cup becomes an annual fixture in the HPR calendar .

A very interesting day with the GLPC Novice Field Trial.
Great ground but wet conditions made the scent a little tricky.
No awards given but was pleased with our Griff being awarded the Guns Award .

Colossal amount of scent and movement near the pen , perfect situation to test your steadiness
The closed season is the perfect time to go back to basics , it doesn’t matter if you have an experienced dog or a young dog the basics can never be overlooked!
Sun was out for our Retrieving Day with Water over the weekend .
It was great to have a mix of breeds from Labradors and spaniels to HPR’s .
We worked on confidence in water , straight lines and delivery to hand .
The handlers worked really hard and showed a significant improvement by the end of the day .
10th June Dorntanza Dog Training will be offering a pointing and flushing day aimed at handlers wanting to progress to the next level of steadiness.
This day would benefit Novice handlers , dogs must have basic stop whistle and recall .
