Meet Charles! 👋

Charles is a summer and winter mountain leader, canoe coach and commercial skipper with 30 years experience of working with groups in the outdoors.

He worked for Outward Bound in Wales and Zimbabwe, where he was Chief Instructor of the Chimanimani Outward Bound School for a year.

He set up and for 16 years ran the charity ‘Odyssey’ that uses adventure to enhance the quality of life for adults with cancer.

Charles is a runner, sailor, furniture maker, boatbuilder, first aid trainer, climber, skier and lover of adventure who has travelled and climbed in wild parts of Europe, Africa and South America.

His father died 25 years ago, and he wishes he had spent more time with him. This was an important reason for Charles beginning the Fathers & Sons trips, realising the importance of this valuable time with family.

Food plays a very important role in our trips.

We see it as part of the bonding experience. Cooking is a gift of love and we want to treat it as such.

We share this everyday chore and turn it into a shared experience in the most remote, serene environments.

What can you expect from the trip? ⛵️

During your week, there will be times of intense sailing as we work closely as a team to manage ten (or more) sails at the same time.

There will be plenty of time for relaxation.

Countless moments of laughter and time to talk over good food cooked for each other. 🏕️

There will be opportunities to work. There will be chances to work with and learn from your fellow crew members.

And of course, there will be many opportunities for reflection and to spend time alone or as a pair - as a father and son.

The 102ft (32m) Brigantine square-rigger is an exciting platform for adventure sailing opportunities across the Scottish seas.

A vital aspect of the Fathers And Sons trips is removing ourselves from our busy lives and taking some time to focus on what matters the most - our family.

This special voyage takes places on a traditional, square-rigged sailing vessel of great, undeniable character and in a wild, secluded area, the remoteness of this trip is impossible to ignore and feel grateful for.

Our lives are full of noise and stress. The busyness of every day often places a strain on our most important relationships.

Recognising the importance of these moments was the reason behind beginning these trips. ⛵️

One-to-one time between a father and son, away from the rest of the family, is a rare and special pleasure and it is all too easy to let a whole year go by without making time for this.

This is the exciting time in the spring when the ship, the Lady of Avenel, is almost ready and about to start the first of her season's charters. The Fathers' and Sons' voyage is booking up but there are still a few places available for 24th-30th July for the intrepid.
We will quickly start to teach you the skills of running the ship and increasingly hand her over to you during the week-long expedition, exploring the wild and uninhabited islands of the Inner Hebrides.
We will share our knowledge of remote and beautiful anchorages, hills and beaches, bivouacking ashore at least once and maybe cooking fresh-caught mackerel over a fire.
You'll be able to climb the mast, steer the ship and raise or lower sails in the company of like-minded men and lads.

We now have a date for next year's Father and Son voyage: it will run from Sunday 24th July at 11am to Saturday 30th July at 11am, strating and finishing in Oban. The cost for a pair of places will be £1,800 which includes food, berths, all equipment and adventure.

We have just completed a week’s voyage with lads and dads which was quite spectacular. Excellent weather (though we might have chosen to have more wind) and we explored 13 small islands, most of them uninhabited. Perhaps the finest was Scarba, from the summit of which we had an outstanding 360 degree view and could see as far as Arran, 40 miles away. There we looked down on a Golden Eagle and saw a White Tailed Sea Eagle.
A very memorable adventure.

A couple of nights ago I saw dolphins swimming around my bow, lit by phosphorescence. Words fail me, it was simply astonishing.

Meanwhile, we still have a few places available 22-28th August for adventurous Lads and their Dads.

The Lady of Avenel is now in the Outer Hebrides and will be ready for the Lads and Dads voyage 8th to 14th August from Oban. There are still some places available for this fantastic adventure so if you're in the mood to explore some wild places have a look at the website at www.wildjourney.co.uk
A pair of places is £1,700 all-in for the full week.

The tall ship 'Lady of Avenel' will leave Maldon for Scotland in the next two weeks. We will be running a Lads and Dads voyage in August as planned and there are still some places available (A full refund will be given in the event of a Covid cancellation).
This is a fantastic opportunity to share an adventure in the Western Isles of Scotland; one of the finest sailing grounds in the world.

Things are looking good for the summer; the restrictions seem to be lifting as expected, a majority of people have been vaccinated and tests are readily available. Lady of Avenel will be in Scotland as planned this summer and she is booked for the Lads and Dads 8-14th August. There are still places available so get in touch if you're interested.

Things seem to be developing positively for this summer’s voyage and we are taking bookings. All payments are fully refundable (less £25 admin charge) in the event of Covid preventing us from running the trip, so there is very little at risk if you book.
