This may be my favourite photo I’ve ever taken! 😮

The flowers, the Milky Way, the Aurora Borealis and Durdle Door in the early hours of this morning, with the symmetry of the colours in the sky and the curve of the clifftop & beach .

I can’t believe how strong the display was last night. After visiting West Bay and seeing the lights above the cliff to the east, I knew we had to go to Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door and I’m so glad we did!

It was as good as any night we experienced in Lofoten, Norway last February!

I’ve posted a video from the clifftop in the comments below just to prove that this is real and really happened 😂

I’ve been following James for a while now. Love his shots. Not surprised this one won him an award. Well done James. 🙌

I'm delighted to reveal I've been named the The South West Coast Path Photographer of the Year!

This was the winning image from over 1,500 entries, taken during Storm Ciaran at Lyme Regis Cobb last November. I still can't believe the winds were calm enough to fly a drone that weighs just 249 grams, while the waves were so impressive.

I went down with the intention of taking photos from the beach and it never crossed my mind I’d be able to fly a drone, until I stepped out the car.

Take a look at the photo in the comments to see how this scene looks on a calm day!

The image will be on display as part of the exhibition at London Paddington from 3rd to 30th July!

Thank you to the judges for their comments below and choosing me as the winner

“A well-deserved overall winner with such a strong image. The contrast between the dark sky and the white water breaking over the Cobb in Lyme Regis. The vulnerability of the buildings makes one realise the power of the sea. Strong images make you want to immerse yourself in the visual experience they create. This is one such excellent image and a deserved overall winner. Bravo!”

Trevor Burrows, Photographer

“The winning photograph impresses both in its beauty and in it its message. It clearly shows the force of nature, with the Cobb being blanketed by the white, churning sea. In contrast, dark and heavy clouds pass by, allowing only little light to come through, and reminding us of looming danger ahead. The South West Coast Path is unique but also vulnerable, especially to extreme weather conditions, which we have particularly experienced in the past 12 months. This image is an excellent example of how powerful photography can be in letting us stop in our tracks and raising awareness for what is happening now.”

And thank you to Luxury Coastal Holidays and Great Western Railway. for the prizes. I think a trip to Cornwall and train tickets to see the exhibition are in order!

The other photo from this set with the waves crashing, is the cover photo of my 2025 Lyme Regis Calendar, which I printed to sell in Lyme Regis shops, but I have also made this available on my website - https://www.jamesloveridgephotography.co.uk/product/2025-lyme-regis-calendar/

What's that in the sky? 👀 Birds of prey are majestic, elegant and a vital part of our ecosystem. Hawks and eagles have rounded/broad wings and tend to soar, while falcons have tapered wings and tails, and often hover. Which ones have you seen?
