Today marks the start of pannage season in the New Forest 🐷

Over the next couple of months, pigs will be out and about hoovering up all the acorns which can be poisonous to livestock.

If you are a member of the public, please do not approach or feed the pigs as they are doing a vitally important job!

Here on the edge of the new forest we have the best of both worlds, walking distance to the town shops pubs and takeaways but only half a mile from the forest. Last week we went up to Abbotswell and up along Hampton Ridge with its wonderful panoramic views towards Salisbury AND Bournemouth. In spite of the dry weather there were still lots of patches of cotton grass that only grows where it is marshy. We then dropped down into Amberwood and through to Slodden in the shade of the magnificent woodlands. Just as we were going through Hasley on the way back we noticed the heather is coming out early. Back through Ogdens and Hyde with its cute donkeys and the Potting Shed where they do great cakes. In all about 9.5miles. Quite a walk but I cheated and did it with my little horse.

We knew there was one left to come. Many thanks to Tricia for the video.

A lovely trip in the New Forest today enjoying the sunshine and autumnal colours.

The hens are so funny. Everyday the same. Each morning they all congregate together for a quick wash and brush up.

Listening to the cuckoo from Cockley Hill as we look down on Dichend Brook and across to Godshill Ridge. It’s a bit up hill and down dale!

We ventured a little further into the New Forest for a walk at Horseshoe Bottom, a vast open meadow. The grass was very short and sparce because of the cold spring. I don’t know what the ponies are finding to eat. We did find lots of tiny flowers though. We are so lucky to have this vast expanse of countryside with free access on our doorstep

Since the Spring Equinox this week the weather has really changed. It was so lovely listening to the bees busy on the gorse and see their little legs covered in pollen.
