Are you off on a summer holiday? Here are a few tips to help you ensure your lawn thrives while you're away and is easy to bring under control when you get back.

Before You Go

👍 Clear all furniture, toys, rugs, paddling pools etc off your lawn and store them safely away. This will ensure they can't leave unsightly yellow patches on your grass.

👍 Apply a wetting agent to your lawn and then give it a good soaking with water. The wetting agent will improve water pe*******on. For best results, ask your lawn care specialist to do this for you.

👍 Mow your lawn. Please don't be tempted to scalp it though, because you'll stress the plants. Be sure to remove the clippings.

👍 If you will be away for a good while (you lucky thing!), arrange for a trusted friend, neighbour or lawn care professional to mow your lawn once a week.

On Your Return

👍 If your lawn is looking a bit shaggy, trim it with the cutting blade on a high setting. Reduce the height of the cut gradually with subsequent mowings.

👍 Feed your grass with a seasonally-appropriate lawn feed.

👍 Apply an iron treatment to boost colour and vigour. (Avoid applying iron when the sun is strong - wait until evening time)

👍 Trim edges to restore that manicured look.

👍 Water the lawn if necessary

If you have any worries about your lawn either before or after your holiday, your local UKLCA Specialist will be able to help and advise. Visit our website (link in bios) to find contact details of a lawn care professional near you.

A few tips to help you care for your lawn over the summer.

Watering:
When the weather is very hot and dry your lawn will likely respond by turning a honey-gold colour. Don't worry, it will recover after a good rain shower, but if you prefer it green (and provided there are no hosepipe restrictions in place) watering your lawn will maintain that verdant look. It's better to water copiously 2-3 times a week than to give it a light sprinkling every day.

Mowing:
If your lawn keeps growing, you should keep mowing. Try to avoid mowing in the heat of the day, it could stress the plants and it definitely won't be good for your health. It's wise to raise the height of cut a little to help shade the soil and conserve water.

Iron:
Iron is a great mineral to apply to lawns in august. Not only does it boost greenness, it helps to control Red Thread disease and, if applied in the right formulation, will also stunt moss growth.

Keep Moving Lawn Furniture and Toys:
Avoid leaving anything on the lawn for more than 24 hours at a time. It will create ugly yellow marks.

Shade Busting:
For lawns that struggle with shade, now is a good time to trim hedges that block the sun and reduce air flow to the lawn.

Going On Holiday?
Mow the lawn and give it a good soaking before you go and it won't be too difficult to resume your normal lawn care regime when you return.

Plan Autumn Renovations:
Lawn care specialists get busy in autumn so if your lawn needs scarifying and aerating, now is a good time book a slot with your local UKLCA member.

At our annual conference we held a little fundraiser and were delighted to recieve this note from Bev telling us how members' donations are helping children with life limiting conditions. Thankyou to everyone who contributed.

Dear Kate

On behalf of Greenfingers Charity, I am writing to thank you very much for your recent donation of £616.79 towards our work. We were delighted to receive such a generous gift from the UK Lawn Care Association; please convey our grateful thanks to your members for thinking of us.

As a charity we are committed to creating specially designed, stimulating gardens that can bring many benefits to children with life-limiting conditions. We have recently had the pleasure of opening two completed gardens, one at the Demelza Hospice in Kent and the other at Derian House in Chorley. These magical spaces will be used by the children, their families and carers to embrace the benefits of being in the fresh air whilst playing and having fun, resting and relaxing.

We simply could not fund these projects were it not for the generosity of supporters like yourselves who give so readily to our cause.

With renewed thanks and very best wishes to you all.

Recently we have found a lot of our customers' lawns to be heavily compacted.

When a lawn becomes compacted, your grass will struggle to get oxygen and nutrients from the soil and may start to thin out or even die off.

A TopGrass Aeration can help reduce the compaction in the lawn. Click the link below to find out more.

Alternatively, a TopGrass Soil Improver can help improve the structure of your soil. Click the link below to find out more.

Ragged edges to the tips of your grass plants is a sure sign that your mower blades are blunt. Instead of slicing cleanly through the vegetation, your mower is ripping at the leaves and causing unsightly damage. Those ragged edges not only look ugly, they take a long time to heal and could potentially encourage disease.

Sharpening or replacing your lawn mower blade will solve the problem in an instant. If you don’t know how to do it yourself, most garden centres will be able to recommend a lawn mower repair shop.

A quick tip to help your lawn to stay verdant and green.

If you love relaxing on your lawn on a balmy summer's day, or if you have children and pets who enjoy the play space but leave their toys littered all over the place, this simple quick tip is for you.

Make it part of your routine to move any objects on your lawn at least once a day. Tables, chairs, picnic rugs, paddling pools will reduce the amount of light and air reaching the plants beneath them. The plants will be stressed and will likely lose their lovely green colour. You could find yourself looking at ugly discoloured patches for several weeks.

If you do forget - or if you come back from holiday to find your lawn looking sorry for itself - a UKCLA lawn care specialist can help rejuvenate and repair any damage. Visit our website (link in bios) to find an independent lawn care specialist near you.

A few suggestions for lawn care jobs to do this weekend.

Trim the edges of your lawn with a half-moon cutter, a strimmer or good old fashioned shears. Neatly edged lawns instantly makes your entire garden look manicured and loved.

Mow the lawn with nice sharp blades. If the grass is a bit wet, blunt blades won't cut at all well but razor sharp blades will make short work of it.

It's not unusual for lawns to lose a bit of their colour and vigour in summer time. A seaweed based treatment will give yours a boost. Not confident applying treatments? Ask your local UKLCA member for help.

Spot treat weeds as and when you spot them. They can be dug out (although this may be difficult with creeping type weeds) or you can use chemicals. If you do use chemicals, then make sure you follow the manufacturers instructions.

Ants in your lawn? Oh dear, ants simply love lawns and if they’ve moved into yours you're probably not at all happy.
There are lots of different ‘off-the-shelf’ ant control products available. Be sure to follow the manufacturers instructions precisely and if you’re struggling to control the ants in your lawn, please seek advice from a lawn care specialist.

Be on the lookout for common summer lawn diseases such as RedThread. The latest blog on our website gives advice on troubleshooting.

Avoid having furniture and toys in the same place on your lawn for more than 1-2 days otherwise they'll leave unsightly yellow patches

Finally, enjoy your lawn. Have a picnic, play games, take photos or even try a new mowing pattern.

A quick tip for summer lawn care.

Lawn grasses naturally turn a honey-beige colour in hot dry conditions.

If you want your lawn to stay greener for longer, maintaining a slightly longer sward will help to shade the soil, keeping it cooler, slowing water loss through evaporation and encouraging the grass plants to delay their drought response.
