Tom's wife Shirley, daughter Katie and two sons Chris and Peter, all now have varying input into the business and bring with them their core family values to the everyday running of the company. Tom is also one of the founding members of the UK Lawncare Association and TopGrass continues to play a big part in this association to date. Tom was appointed as Vice Chairman for the Association in 2020 and continues to hold this position. TopGrass is also a proud member of the SME Climate Hub, a global initiative that empowers small to medium sized companies to take climate action and build more resilient businesses. Through the SME Climate Hub, we commit to lowering our impact on the environment through authentic action, halving our emissions by 2030. In making the commitment, we have joined the United Nations Race to Zero campaign.

December is a funny old time of year for lawn care. Your grass still needs attention - the plants are very much alive and even if you're not seeing much growth above ground, the roots will still be growing and interacting with the soil. The gardener's job at this time of year is to protect the lawn as much as possible and to help the plants prepare for spring.

Mowing: If the weather is mild and the sward keeps growing, it's OK to mow. But please don't scalp the lawn. It's enough to just cut the tips off the grass blades to keep the lawn looking neat.

Continue to remove any fallen leaves.

An iron treatment applied in December will help to 'harden' the grass so that it's more resiliant to frost. Iron is also a great weapon in the fight against moss.

If you're not using your mower much, why not book it in for a service so that it runs like a dream next season?

Have you planned your 2025 lawn care regime yet? Give it some thought throughout December and contact your local lawn care professional to discuss renovations and treatments. If you'll need any new tools or equipment, make a wish list and look out for bargains in the January sales.

Frosty days have returned! 🥶

Please be careful not to tread on your lawn when it is frosty as this can damage the grass plant, causing blackened areas! 🌱

With night time temperatures forecast to drop, it's important to remember to avoid stepping on frosted grass.

Each blade of grass is made from millions of microscopic cells. Each cell is enclosed by a protective membrane. When the membrane is frozen it becomes brittle and is easily shattered by external pressures - like the ones created by feet walking across the lawn. Once the membrane is shattered the cell will die and the plant cannot replace it until the weather warms up in spring.

Walking on frozen lawns may not look as though it is doing any harm, but after the thaw, you'll likely see ugly brown footprints wherever anyone stepped.

If you must step onto a frozen lawn, try to use planks or boards to spread the weight. Better still, make yourself a cup of tea, cosy up indoors and wait for the frost to disperse.

With all the damp and mild weather this autumn we have seen a sharp increase in the number of lawns that have Fusarium disease, also known as Snow Mould!❄
