This Emily and Kate from Sundae Press share their top food & drink picks.

Emily Payne and Kate make colourful printed guides exploring the south-west. The first in the series is a celebration of breakfast: the food, the rituals and the best places to eat it. Emily, who lives in Stroud and grew up in Bristol, scoured the region looking for breakfast perfection. Here are some of her favourites:

Hilda Bakery, Bristol

From a van half-way up Whiteladies Road on St John’s Court, get a proper coffee fix and some seriously posh pastries. .bakery owner Will Prosser was a pastry chef at Little Shop & Pantry (Littleshop & Pantry) in Westbury Park before going it alone, and his cute van is named in memory of his grandmother. Shout out to the apricot Danish with whipped Greek yogurt and thyme.

Gather Bristol
We love this oasis of Scandi calm on Park Street. The coffee Gather coffee comes in beautiful finnerty ceramics mugs on wooden trays, and the chewy dark rye bread served with whipped butter, a soft-boiled egg and mature cheese, as part of the Scandinavian breakfast, is divine. Also, any excuse to have cheese for breakfast.

Hotplate, Bristol

If you like dreamy carb highs and good coffee, this one is for you. Hotplate is a not-so-greasy spoon from the Left Handed Giant Brewing Co. crew in one of Bristol's most iconic old buildings. Satisfying breakfasts like fried egg baps with Tater tots – aka hash browns – arrive in plastic baskets and brown sauce is made in-house. Meat, veggie and vegan plates can be made even bigger. Also, shout out to the friendly staff.

Catleys_, Bristol

Unashamedly sweet and flakey treats from the amazing Hannah Catley (owner of Lockdown Loaves and Bake Off The Professionals contestant). Think soft-serve-filled croissants and vegan custard and raspberry brioche buns. Coffee comes in cute Florence ceramics wiggle mugs.

Loves Cafe, Weston super Mare
Alongside serving up the fluffiest pancakes and waffles in North Somerset, Loves Cafe source ingredients locally and champion local musicians, artists and filmmakers and are a community favourite. We loved the mushrooms on toast with foraged wild garlic. We're working up to a pre-breakfast dip in the Weston marine lake.

This , Tristan Hogg, co-founder and managing director of Pieminister shares his top food and drink picks in the city.

I set up Pieminister with my brother-in-law Jon here in Bristol back in 2003. We’ve grown but we’re still a proper Bristol family business, with our pie kitchen up in Brentry. Not just about great taste & value, sustainability is a top priority. Covering animal, human & ecological welfare to climate change & waste, our goals are ambitious for an indie business of our size. But we think anything less just isn't an option.

Pieminister (Broad Quay) My current fave is our Beer & Deer pie - wild British venison in a rich sticky Wiper & True stout gravy. Deer numbers need to be responsibly managed here to protect the wider ecosystem, making wild venison a delicious, sustainable alternative to beef.

Wilson's Bread Shop – it’s worth having one of their koji-cured bacon Hokkaido rolls just for the homemade brown sauce. Friendly staff, lovely smells, it’s a great place to pop into at the weekend.

Fisk & Frite - dangerously close to my house, I’m here far too often. Have a pint at Wiper and True Barrel Store then head round the corner for chips smothered in curried prawns

C & T Licata & Son – I’m in there quite a bit to buy real Italian ingredients, and I never leave without one of their individual tiramisu pots and everything I need to mix negronis at home.

And I can’t do this list without mentioning Mayflower Chinese Restaurant. I spent a lot of late nights there eating soft shell crab under the coach station and I’m keeping a close eye on progress at their new location in Broadmead as I’ll be back in there the minute they open the doors.
