Something from the Czech history (second war) and history of the church St. Cyril and Methodius

Anthropoid means ape, but it is mainly a cover name for a paratrooper sent during World War II from Great Britain to the territory of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. Its main goal was to carry out the liquidation of the representative of the Reich Protector and head of the RSHA, Reinhard Heydrich, which happened on 1942.

On May 27, 1942, members of the Anthropoid group assassinated Acting Reich Protector Reinhard Heydrich. However, the paratroopers, who were specially trained for this military task, did not manage to leave Prague in time and eventually perished in the crypt of the Church of St. Cyril and Methodius.

The fight in the church of St. Cyril and Methodius took place on the 18th. Among them were Jan Kubiš and Josef Gabčík, who carried out the assassination of Heydrich. The fight was divided into two parts. Firstly, it was the defense of the emporium and the church choir by three paratroopers, which lasted about 2 hours, and secondly, the German conquest of the crypt defended by four paratroopers.

The idea to open churches at night originated fifteen years ago in Vienna, where also in 2005 the first Night of Churches took place - "Lange Nacht der Kirchen".

In 2009, the Night of Churches crossed borders and churches and prayer rooms were also opened in several places in the Czech Republic. In 2010, the Night of Churches was already held throughout the Czech Republic, in 2011 for the first time in Slovakia, since 2012 the Night of Churches has also been held in Estonia (Kirikute Öö in Estonian), in 2016 it was held for the first time in Switzerland.

Ara - the functionalist palace and the view from the roof top)))

The monumental functionalist palace on the corner of Perlová Street was built in 1931, and its neon back-light was hinting at a possible business function of the building. Construction-wise, it was a steel frame that used the same technology as the famous New York skyscrapers, and thanks to its steel durability, the palace has survived two fires. Many people remember this building from the socialist period as Perla, a department store that sold textiles, clothing, shoes, household items, electrical appliances, and other goods. In 2019, the palace underwent a complete reconstruction. Most of the building is now occupied by the coworking space Zenwork. You can see interiors by Czech designers and architects that also maintain some of the original elements, and you can also climb up to the terraces and enjoy beautiful views of Prague.

The monumental palace on the corner of Jungmann Square is one of Prague’s few buildings built in the national style. This purely Czech artistic style (also called Art Deco, rondo cubism, or Czech deconstructivism) incorporated references to folklore, Slavic colorfulness, and a greater amount of decorations. At the time, it was very popular among the public, but it was criticized by younger generations of architects that followed. Today’s art historians agree that Adria Palace is one of the most fascinating architectural monuments in Prague, commending the decorations and details. Come take a closer look at this unique example of the architecture of the First Czechoslovak Republic!

Forum - the place where Franz Kafka worked

Please see his statue with a Beatle

Located on the corner of Wenceslas Square and Jindřišská Street, this opulent neo-baroque building with many decorative elements is a feast for the eyes. Although it resembles a palace, it was in fact built for a wealthy Italian insurance company. The dominant feature of this cultural monument built at the end of the 19th century is not just the dome but especially the unique imperial staircase inside with a rich stucco decoration. Come explore the place where one of the most influential writers of the 20th century – the legendary Franz Kafka – worked as an insurance clerk!

🚗 Automotoklub in Spálená street Prague

The Czech Auto Club was founded, like in other countries, at the time of the beginning of motoring, which had not yet been regulated by legislation. The first germs of motorcycle clubs arose within the framework of velocipedist (cycling) clubs. Auto clubs, including the Czech one, were partners of motor vehicle manufacturers, but they also significantly participated in the creation of the first systems of road markings , registration and marking of vehicles, qualification and technical requirements for vehicles and drivers, etc. Some of them were directly responsible for issuing the driver's licence, various permits and certificates or by placing traffic signs.

From 1905, local German automobile clubs were simultaneously established on the territory of the later Czechoslovakia.

🚂 The main railway station

The Fant building at Prague's main railway station is one of the most important Art Nouveau buildings in the Czech Republic. At the same time, since 1976 it has also been the largest Art Nouveau real estate monument in our country. Its restoration is crucial not only because of the preservation of cultural heritage for future generations. In 2021, the total reconstruction of the interior spaces began, which directly followed the restoration of the facade and roof of the Fanta building. The restoration of the historic interiors takes place in two stages. The first concerned the cultural halls in the northern part of the building and adjacent spaces on the first floor and mezzanine.

Under the watchful supervision of experts from the National Institute of Monuments and the relevant department of the Prague municipality, the art nouveau paintings and plastic elements dominated by green foliage were restored in all affected areas as part of the reconstruction. The extensive stucco decoration is also new, and the great hall is dominated by the historic state coat of arms. Sensitive care was also given to the beautiful original stained glass windows, ceramic mosaics, wooden window and door frames, wooden paneling and floors. The second stage will then focus on the interiors on the higher floors and the southern part of the building.

Lucerna cinema and beautiful art nouveau cafe ..

The creator of this statue is the artist David Černý.

HANGING FROM THE CEILING OF the Art Nouveau Lucerna Palace in Prague, an ancient king rides triumphantly astride… an upside-down, apparently dead horse.

Created by Prague-born artist David Černý, whose claim to fame was the painting a Soviet tank pink as a memorial to the Velvet Revolution, he’s also known for his unsettling large scale installation piece of babies crawling their way up the Prague television tower, among other works of modern surrealism.

The sculpture is a mocking reference to the more famous equestrian statue of King (and later, Saint) Wenceslas that sits in Wenceslas Square, and possibly a mocking nod to Czech president Vaclav Klaus, although the artist will not say what his intentions were.

This is a small garden called Františkánská just in the centre of the new town)) a little oasis when you want to rest from the busy Wenceslas square))

This unique natural oasis in the city center is furnished with a number of benches, over which span metal arches laden with roses in the summer. Lawn areas are separated by low yew hedges, and the garden is completed with several interesting sculptures, fountains, a gazebo, a playground, fruit trees and herb beds, which harken back to the former owners, the Carmelites and the Franciscans, who once grew herbs and spices here.

☀️ Charles bridge and the old town is one of the most beautiful parts of Prague..

As the only means of crossing the river Vltava until 1841, Charles Bridge was the most important connection between Prague Castle and the city's Old Town and adjacent areas. This land connection made Prague important as a trade route between Eastern and Western Europe.
