Maintenance and refurbishment of the Tyne Bridge started last September and could last for up to four years.
The funding package includes a long overdue major maintenance programme for the Tyne Bridge, which includes the sizeable task of painting it, as well as upgrading many parts of its ageing structure.

The Grade II* listed structure was last refurbished and painted in 2001 and is well overdue for a refurbishment programme. The paint system was designed to last approximately 18-20 years between major maintenance, and refurbishment works are urgently required.
The full programme includes steelwork repairs, full re-painting, concrete repairs, drainage improvements, stonework and masonry repairs, bridge deck waterproofing and resurfacing, parapet protection and bridge joint replacement. These works are required to restore the structure and future proof the route by alleviating the need for continual adhoc maintenance works.

today we followed ' Cuddy's Corse' the pilgrim route from Chester le Street to Durham, symbolic of the journey taken by the monks carrying the coffin of St Cuthbert over a thousand years ago.
The Procession led to Durham Cathedral, built as a shrine to St. Cuthbert

It's not just in Scotland
Today as part of the St Cuthbert Procession we heard the Border Pipes being played by Paul Martin.
The border pipes are related to the Scottish Great Highland Bagpipe but quite different and a much older instrument.
Which do you prefer ?

How's this for a whisky collection...
There are 3384 bottles of whisky in the vault at the Scotch Whisky Experience.
These were collected over many years by Claive Vadiz, the founder of the Brazilian Association of Whisky Collectors.
This was brought to Scotland in 2009 and is the highlight of a visit.

So sad to hear that the Sycamore tree has been deliberately felled last night.
The iconic view on Hadrian's wall is no more.
Sycamore Gap was voted English Tree of the Year in 2016 in the Woodland Trust’s awards and is much-loved by people from across the world.
Northumberland National Park Authority would like to ask the public not to visit the site at this time whilst they work to identify what has happened and to make the site safe.

Hello Newcastle
How many other medieval castles have a main line railway running through the middle ?

Happy International Bagpipe day
Recognised now as an instrument played particularly in Scotland, bagpipes are thought to date back to Egypt around 400 B.C.
The National Piping Centre in Glasgow is a national and international centre of excellence for the instrument and its music.
I visited a couple of times last year with groups visiting Scotland. The students from Pearl High School in Miississippi had great fun trying out the 'chanter' which is used before graduating to the actual pipes. Hard work !

I visited a couple of times last year, and had a great demo from Jamie, one of the tutors.
There's a great restaurant too 😋

Vindolanda Tablets
Vindolanda in the distance, the name translates as 'White lands'
It's hidden in a hollow and one of the last places the snow melts, hence the waterlogged soil.
It’s 50 years ago since the Vindolanda Tablets were discovered by renowned archaeologist the late Robin Birley during routine excavations at the site of a Roman fortress in Northumberland- pre daring Hadrian’s Wall.
Written on thin postcard-sized slivers of wood with these tablets date to the 1st and 2nd centuries AD
Their survival is remarkable, trapped in waterlogged soil for almost 2000 years
What is also amazing is that they show messages from ordinary soldiers and give us a glimpse on to life on the northernmost frontier of the British empire.
One of the tablets talks about the difficulties of bringing supplies to the northern part of Britain, due to the roads being in such a bad state, and another one is a note sent to accompany a package of socks 🧦 sandals🩴 and underpants🩲
When they were discovered, they were the oldest surviving handwritten documents in Britain.
You can see the tablets on display in their original location in the museum at the fort at Vindolanda, still run by Andrew Birley, Robin’s son and some of them are also in the British Museum in London which declared the tablets to be as Britain’s top archeological treasure.
I’m lucky enough to visit Vindolanda regularly working as a guide, and I really get excited about showing people these incredible tablets giving us a glimpse into history

This wild and desolate area was the site of the "Redeswire Fray' the last armed conflict between England and Scotland prior to the Union of the crowns in 1603.
Wardens of the Scottish and English border regions traditionally met at Carter Bar at to settle disputes.
Of July 1575 things became violent and a number of Englishmen were killed or captured with the Scots victorious.

this morning we were lucky enough to have a glorious bright sunny day for our trip to the top of the Forth Bridge.
This is an amazing piece of engineering and before the trip we heard all about the trials and tribulations of the engineers and the men who built this amazing structure

Sage Gateshead ..changing its name
A call has gone out from Sage Gateshead to audiences, artists, communities and all who feel a connection to the building and the charity it represents to help create not just a new name but a new visual identity for what was originally known as the regional music centre.
We can take that to mean a new branding.
Changing the appearance of Sir Norman Foster’s distinctive building would be a challenge and nobody is suggesting that should happen.
All are invited to share thoughts, memories, photos and ideas as part of a campaign with the hashtag #sgchanges which will be popping up online and via the Sage Gateshead website.
