St Govan's Chapel.. Pembrokeshire, Wales *Link to the video will be in the comments*

Nestled into a fold on a rugged strip of the Pembrokeshire coastline, this 13th century chapel is built into the cliffs, on a formation said to have been used by a 6th century saint. Legends of pirates, pagans and magic stones have endured for over a thousand years, perhaps many more, and looking out from the chapel window you half expect to see a suspicious silhouette, sailing swiftly by… but were the ships the true danger? Or was it really the local pagans?

Inside the chapel there is a doorway which leads to an interesting formation in the rock. Part of it is hollowed out and gives the appearance of an imprint of a human skeleton, particularly the shape of a ribcage. The story goes that whilst being chased by local pagan persecutors, the rock opened up to allow the saint to hide inside and closed perfectly around him. When the danger was over, the crevice opened up just enough to release him, leaving the imprint of his body remaining where he had stood.

As usual there are many versions of the tale, the main difference in the story being whether it was locals or pirates that were doing the attacking… but they generally agree that when the attackers could not find him, they stole his bell instead..

This version of the story, that cast blame on the pagan locals, says that during stormy seas, passing ships would often seek shelter in this small bay, only to crash into the rocks. The locals would then steal the bounty from these ships.. some go further saying that they would use lanterns and fires to further disrupt and confuse the ships navigators. Govan is said to have detested these barbaric practices and began using a bell to warn them away from the shore. The locals came to attack Govan but unable to find him they stole his bell. Upon release from the rock, he was distraught and wished for the bell to return. Angels flew the bell back, and to secure it from future theft they encased it in stone. When Govan struck the stone, it rang out a thousand times louder than it did in it's original form.

As usual there are many versions of the tale, check out our video to learn the rest of the legends..including the tales of the magic bell at the chapel. In the video we also delve into the ideas of Wirt Sikes..written in his book "British Goblins" from 1880, where he explores the lore of the bell deeper.. and suggests this story is based on the ancient legends of the magical Ring of Gyges, the ring of Invisibility which is written about in Plato's Republic.
