Day 4 of Happy Brașov Fair 2024: A Memorable Day in Romania

Day 4 of the Happy Brașov Fair 2024 itinerary took us on a journey through some of Romania's most remarkable locations. Our first stop was the Libearty Bear Sanctuary, a non-profit organization dedicated to the welfare of 120 brown bears. Spanning 69 hectares (equivalent to 69 football stadiums), this sanctuary is celebrated for its ethical practices and is proudly endorsed by National Geographic. The sanctuary exemplifies its commitment to the bears by providing 2,000 kg of food daily, with an annual cost of €7,000 per bear.

Next, we ventured to the charming village of Fundata, nestled 1,300 feet above sea level and renowned for having the freshest air in Romania. Here, we were warmly welcomed at Casa PELINICA, an enchanting agri-tourism spot owned by our guide's family for generations. We indulged in delightful local pastries and savored Afinata, a traditional homemade blueberry alcohol, immersing ourselves in the rich local culture.

One of the day's highlights was our visit to Cheile Grădiștei Fundata, a picturesque resort famed for its adventurous offerings. Nestled in a breathtaking valley surrounded by mountains, this resort captivated us with its stunning views and tranquil atmosphere. The alpine coaster provided an exhilarating experience with its twists and turns against the backdrop of spectacular scenery. Cheile Grădiștei Fundata caters perfectly to outdoor enthusiasts, offering activities such as hiking, cycling, and winter sports like skiing.

Our day concluded with a tour of Club Vila Bran, a distinguished complex blending modern amenities with traditional Romanian charm. Set against a backdrop of panoramic mountain views, Club Vila Bran features various accommodations and a restaurant serving delicious local cuisine. The highlight was exploring the magical "Make Believe Land" within the club, which included a Santa's grotto, a witch's home, and a princess castle. The evening continued with an exquisite dinner at the restaurant, which offered a delightful array of Romanian dishes. The night ended with joy and laughter, and after dinner, I even danced a stroll, marking a perfect end to another splendid day at the Happy Brașov Fair 2024.

Day Three in Transylvania: A Journey Through Nature and History

Today, our adventure in Romania continued with a visit to the stunning Valea Cetății Cave. The climb to the cave was a bit challenging, with a steep path leading up to the entrance, but it was well worth the effort. Inside, the cave’s formations were intriguing, displaying natural beauty that has developed over millennia. The highlight was experiencing total darkness for a few moments, a rare and eerie experience that left us all in awe.

Next, we visited Dino Park, which turned out to be a delightful experience for all ages. The park is designed to engage children with its life-sized dinosaur models and interactive exhibits, but even as adults, we found it fascinating and fun.

For lunch, we headed to Hanul Bran, a charming local restaurant established in 1968. The meal was fantastic, starting with a sharing plate of traditional appetizers, followed by tender veal, and ending with a delicious chocolate lava cake. The restaurant, located in a beautiful rustic hotel, provided an authentic and cozy atmosphere.

After lunch, we walked to the iconic Bran Castle. Known worldwide as "Dracula’s Castle," it has a rich history that extends beyond the Dracula legend. Originally a fortress built in the 14th century, it later became a royal residence, most famously associated with Queen Marie of Romania in the early 20th century. The castle’s gothic architecture and historical exhibits provided a deep dive into Romania’s past.

We then returned to Hanul Bran hotel for a tour. The hotel exuded local charm, with quirky decorations and rooms offering stunning views, either of the castle or the picturesque fields behind the hotel.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to our final stop for the next three days, the delightful Mama Cozonacilor. This charming hotel offers a unique local experience, complete with an onsite bakery known for its homemade bread and pastries. The hotel also hosts a variety of workshops, from bread-making to traditional crafts, offering guests a chance to immerse themselves in local culture.

Dinner at the hotel's restaurant, Mama Cozonacilor, was a splendid affair. We were welcomed with a traditional breaking of bread with brandy and cheese, accompanied by local dancing. The food was exceptional, featuring dishes like marinated chicken and delicious pork chops. Dessert included an array of local sweets, a perfect end to a rich culinary experience.

We ended the evening with a cosy campfire in the hotel’s garden, sharing stories and enjoying the peaceful ambiance. Another memorable day in Transylvania, filled with history, nature, and culture.

Day 8: 80th Anniversary D-Day Commemoration

Today, our journey took us to La Fière for the grand parachute drop, a highlight of our 80th anniversary D-Day commemorations. La Fière played a crucial role in D-Day history. The small bridge there was strategic during the Normandy invasion, essential to prevent German counterattacks from cutting off the advancing Allied forces.

Walking the 5km to the drop zone along tracks and paths, I felt transported back to 1944. Seeing the long line of people following the same route added to the sense of connection with the past and the families who experienced the fear and uncertainty of those times.

Around 40,000 people were gathered across several fields, eager to witness this historic re-enactment. Paratroopers from 12 nations, a mix of trained public and military personnel, were preparing to take to the skies. The planes used for the drop were C-47s and C-130s, legendary aircraft with rich histories. Seeing them banked up was a sight to behold; at one stage, 18 aeroplanes were in formation, ready to release their paratroopers. The spectacle and sound were overwhelming, with engines roaring and the sky filled with descending parachutes. A total of 1,311 paratroopers were dropped, and we were also treated to 13 free-fall parachutists.

Later, we made a quick stop at Utah Beach. We were fortunate to witness a U.S. naval ceremony. Utah Beach was one of the main landing areas during the D-Day invasion, and its memorial stands as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made. Nearby, we visited a French Resistance memorial, honouring those who fought against the occupying forces.

Our journey then took us towards Omaha Beach. En route, we stopped at a private museum dedicated to Omaha Beach. Although closed, we viewed the historic vehicles outside and a mural featuring Churchill, the Enigma code, and Alan Turing, who cracked it.

We also paid our respects at several memorials: one to the US Navy 2nd Infantry Division, another to the provisional engineer bridge battalions, and finally, at Pointe du Hoc. The history of Pointe du Hoc is one of extraordinary bravery. The cliffs were scaled by U.S. Rangers under intense enemy fire to destroy key German gun emplacements. Seeing the craters and reading the stories of those who lost their lives brought the past vividly to life.

One personal story from the memorial that touched me deeply was of a young ranger, barely 20, who wrote a letter to his family the night before the assault. His courage and determination, facing almost certain death, embody the spirit of all those who fought on that fateful day.

Sword beach 8th June 2024

Day 5: 80th Anniversary of D-Day - Trip to the Normandy Beaches

Today was a mix of reflection and celebration. We started with a lazy morning but soon found ourselves on a walk to Colleville-Montgomery, which is about halfway between Ouistreham and Lion-sur-Mer.

Upon arrival, we were greeted by a remarkable sight: nearly 200 musicians from 13 different nations. The air was alive with the stirring sounds of pipes and drums as a parade of bands marched along Maritime Boulevard. The display of military vehicles added a touch of historical depth, making it a day to remember.

This gathering was a heartfelt tribute to Bill Millin, the famous piper who played his bagpipes amidst the chaos of Sword Beach during the Normandy invasion. His story is legendary—despite being under heavy fire, he walked up and down the beach, playing his pipes to boost the morale of his fellow soldiers. Millin's bravery and defiance became a symbol of hope and courage.

During the ceremony, the local mayor delivered a moving speech dedicated to Bill Millin. He spoke of a film that has been made in Bill's honor and presented a commemorative plaque to Millin's son and grandson. It was a touching moment that connected past and present, highlighting the enduring impact of Bill Millin's actions.

As we wandered around looking for something to eat, we had an unexpected and delightful encounter with Nicholas Tate from BBC Radio Ulster. Being interviewed for the radio from my home country was a special moment that added a personal touch to the day's events.

We spent the evening in the company of friends, chatting and making plans for the big day on the 6th of June. This trip has been a profound journey through history, filled with moments of remembrance and the forging of new memories.

Stay tuned as we continue to honor the bravery and sacrifice of those who fought on these historic shores.

Fun Friday Fact! 🤔

Don't expect a cheetah to roar!

They lack the special two-piece bone in the throat that allows other big cats to do so. But they do produce other sounds, including growling, chirping, hissing and purring.
