Somerset Walking Club The Somerset Walking Club is for the enjoyment of the beautiful Somerset countryside A friendly and positive group we welcome new members

Every Sunday we walk somewhere in the Somerset countryside, generally alternating long and shorter walks each weekend. Twice each year ( Spring and Autumn ) the Club has long weekends away in hotels located in excellent walking areas.

21/07/24 Tony and Joy, this day's walk leaders, very cleverly devised a combination walk with 8 miles in two loops, which could be done separately. Starting with the Swans Neck Circular (2 ¼ miles) from the car park in Halberton then 5 ¾ miles along the disused railway line to the Canal Visitor Centre, Tiverton, returning via the Grand Western Canal. Irrespective of whether the 12 members did one or two of these walks they were treated to lovely conditions as well as interesting, beautiful scenery. Many thanks to J. and T. for such a super day

30/06/2024 ~ Ten miles based round Clatworthy Reservoir. We were led by Margaret, who stood in at the last minute and led the walk based on memory rather than a recent recce ~ a veritable tour-de-force!! From the North West edge of the reservoir Margaret led us, via Stolford, up to the Naked Boy's Stone in the Brendon Hills, thence via Dun's Stone and Middleton Court to return along the South West edge of the reservoir. A wonderful varied walk on a beautiful last day of June.

25 members enjoyed a wonderful weekend at the Bedford Hotel in Tavistock at the end of April; the Club's Spring weekend away. The Hotel provided traditional comfortable accommodation and friendly service in an historical setting. For the doughtier souls who enjoy a challenge there were two 12-mile walks, taking in various tors around Merrivale - Cox, Inga, Mis, Kings, to name a few. Weather was kind (though chilly) so there were superb views. For those who prefer a shorter walk there were bluebells around the reservoir and a few tors. Tiny lambs and fluffy foals everywhere, denoting Spring, despite the chilly breeze. Tavistock was a perfect base; close to the moor and with plenty to do within the town, exploring its history and canal and riverside walks. All thanks to the organisers and walk leaders of this most successful break and thanks to Cherry, Joy and Tony for the photos

7th April. While Storm Kathleen was raging ( albeit not raging quite as much as the Weathermen had predicted ) 10 intrepid and hardy members of the Club met on the Eastern flanks of the Southern Quantocks to walk from Hawkridge reservoir to Aisholt and back. On this lovely pastoral walk the ants' nests were of considerable interest ~ unforunately no reports of raiding Green Woodpeckers! Joy and Tony led this lovely 5.75 mile walk over mixed terrain; many thanks to them for devising such an attractive walk.

Undeterred by the Weather forecasts, predicting a pretty foul day, 16 of us met at Horner Wood this morning for a 9 mile walk. Setting out along the Coleridge Way we soon reached Porlock and thence to Porlock Marsh. Paid our respects to the American crew who perished in 1942 when their Liberator crashed and headed on via Bossington Beach to Bossington. Lunch was taken on the Eastern flank of Bossinton Hill - where a slight drizzle was enjoyed while the views were 'atmospheric' - before heading back to Horner via West Luccombe. A terrific, varied walk, marvellously led by Woody was enjoyed by all. Moral ~ even though the Weatherman cries 'Foul' huge pleasure still can be derived from walking Somerset's footpaths!

On Sunday 5th November leaders Joy & Tony led a walk which profited from some pleasant weather for this time of year. Members met at Barrington Village Hall CP and did a moderate 5 ¾ miles, mainly on field paths with some quiet lanes around the Shepton Beauchamp area. Great views were had with the blue skies adding to the pleasure with the rainbow providing a bonus. Many thanks to Tony and Joy.

A description of the Club's Autumn ( 30/09/2023 - 02/10/2023 ) by Cherry Bird, Somerset Walking Club's Programme Secretary

A delightful weekend was had by all at the Whipsiderry Hotel in Porth, just outside Newquay. We were treated to the warmest of welcomes from owners Lisa and Andy and the most wonderful gourmet food, courtesy of Rob, the chef. What's more, the weather held good and we were able to offer and complete walks of different lengths and levels of challenge each day, to cater for all tastes. Naturally most of us headed for the coast path, which is truly spectacular along this stretch, with fantastic views and jagged rock formations. On Saturday the longer distance walkers opted for the strenuous 11 miles from Port Isaac to Rock, starting with some seriously steep climbs and ending along the sandy estuary of the river Camel, while those who prefer something less demanding took the coastal bus to Carnewas and walked 6 miles back to the hotel. On Sunday, the longer walk was 11.5 miles from Treyarnon back to the hotel, while others chose either a circular inland walk or coast path from Treyarnon to Carnewas.

Today, 25th June, while the more 'sporty' members of the Club were toiling across 12 miles of the Dartmoor Way 7 of we less sporty ( indolent? ) members, expertly led by Fiona and Geoff, chose a 5-6 mile walk across Ivy Thorn Hill, Collard Hill then back via Compton Dundon. Though the sporty lot probably feel they had a great walk ( I am sure they did ) we're certain they won't have seen as many Butterflies, including a Large Blue! Our views were pretty good too................

Just returned from the Club's Spring Weekend based in Bideford. Two groups did the Long or Medium walks on the Saturday and the Sunday. What a magnificent coast, affording great footpaths and views, and we were so lucky with the weather. Huge thanks to Cherry and John who did all the organisation AND led the two longer walks [ combined the two longer walks covered around 22 miles ]. So lucky with the weather on both days; a fantastic weekend.
