Laurence Binyon’s poem ‘The Fallen’, written in 1914 at Pentire Point, near Polzeath in North Cornwall, is a poignant tribute to soldiers who lost their lives in war.

Its most famous lines, “They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old,” have become a central part of Remembrance Sunday ceremonies, symbolising a nation’s enduring respect and mourning.

Recited each year, the poem connects generations, honoring the bravery and sacrifice of those who fought and reminding us to keep their memory alive.
