Our Gaelic word for today is Machair pronounced Ma-chir.

It is the word that describes the grassland next to beaches and prevalent in the Outer Hebrides. The Machair is made up a lime-rich shell sand washed up by the Atlantic ocean and our winter gales have helped spread the sand well inland. Light cattle-grazing, hay cutting and low intensity rotational crop farming (free of artificial fertilisers or pesticides) has shaped the landscape to what it is today.

This protected fertile land is fragile and a haven for wildflowers, wildlife, crops and livestock🐝🌸🌱🐏
and we need to preserve this land. We ask that you respect our Machair by:

✅Don't park or overnight park on the machair - this has led to damage to the Machair which will take years to
✅Leave no trace - litter can cause problems with our wildlife and livestock
✅ Do not light fires or use foil BBQs on the Machair - the land takes years to recover and also there is a risk of wildfires
✅ Keep dogs on leads and away from livestock

So please tread lightly, respect, protect and enjoy our fragile machair.🙏
