Since 2021 #16 Courtney Smith has held the Midland Champion title. With the closure of Birmingham Wheels, there were no tracks left within the Midlands that the Super Twos raced at. That was all to change on Saturday as the Super Twos made their Hednesford Hills Raceway debut. The first time back in the Midlands meant the long awaited Midland Championship was back up for grabs. Unfortunately before the championship began, the rain started to fall thick and fast, at this point we knew we were in for an interesting race…
#33 Billy Fear battled it out for a while before taking the lead spot. With cars behind him spinning in the wet or battling hard with each other, Billy pulled an almost 1/3 of a lap lead, that was until relative newcomer #579 Dan Harris succumbed to the tracks slippery surface and began to spin. With #466 Burksfield, #633 Amas and #107 Thomas all in close proximity and unable to avoid each other, the inevitable happened - with Amas ending up on top of Harris's car and the medical team being called to assist Thomas. With yellows out this meant the gap between Billy and the others was closed and the race was
to be anyone’s. Billy again took the lead before newcomer #242 Sam Powell spun and was collected by #85 Marchant and the yellow flags came out again. This meant Billy had lost his fantastic lead once more and had a massive challenge lying ahead of him with the rolling restart and just 2 laps to go, with National Champion Stewart Adams directly behind him and the highly experienced Jordan Salmon sitting in 3rd. Billy managed to get his foot down fast when the green flag came out and managed to hold off hits from the cars behind with Adams and Salmon fighting hard and switching positions continuously. With Billy’s car losing grip almost every time he came round turn 3 he certainly kept us on the edge of our seats of whether he would take the chequered flag or fall victim to the rain. Eventually he took the double chequered flag and became Midland Champion 2024! There were tears and cheers all around. It was great to see 18yr old Billy with so much determination and confidence on the track and great to see his hard work finally pay off and take the Championship in front of all his family especially Dad, Mum and Nan!
