Find Emma at Ellesmere Floating Market this weekend.

I see so many Canada Geese on our travels on the canals and right now, there seems to be nurseries of goslings being looked after by both parents. Watercolour.

From the mid 1950’s the Shropshire Union Canal, known fondly as “The Shroppie” started to gain a new found popularity as a leisure industry.

Cruising on the canal which was once an occupation and heavy work done by people to earn a living started to became very popular and enjoyable as a holiday!

Many people bought their own narrow boats and converted them for use for holidays and weekend breaks, whilst others were now able to hire them from leisure boat hire companies like Ladyline Cruises in Market Draytoni
pictured) which were becoming (increasingly popular.

Boating holidays on “The Shroppie” were a great learning curve for many with much hard work but great fun as these boating amateurs learned the new skills of navigating the Shroppie’s many locks!

Canal side pubs enjoyed the extra trade too, as many overnight moorings were near to the pubs and many a days fun and escapades on the canal have been discussed over a nice bar meal and a pint!

The Shropshire Union Canal covers 77 miles in total from Autherley Junction near Wolverhampton in the South to Ellesmere Port in the North it was originally called the Birmingham and Liverpool Junction Canal when it was completed in 1835 soon after its designer Thomas Telford’s death in 1834.
The canal was taken over by The Shropshire Union Canal Company in 1845.

Many boating holidays included our lovely stretch of the canal with lots to see including the Deep Cutting and the Aqueduct on the route.

Here is a great photo which shows the former Ladyline base on the Shroppie in our town
