Florence to Rome Day 7
Narni to Poggio Mirteto
60km
The tour’s final ride takes you as far at Poggio Mirteto, where you hand back your bikes and catch the train to Rome. Having never visited Italy’s capital city, we decided to set off early to give us the most time possible.
The first half of the ride is rolling hills through and past pretty hilltop towns, with plenty of places to stop for an espresso. Our top spot was in Rocchette where we found a tiny balcony with unreal views across the valley.
The second half is a straight up and down, with a final sustained climb of the week followed by a wonderful descent down to the train station. The 200m ascent is more than made up for by a speedy 400m descent.
We agreed with fellow cyclists on the tour that this was probably the best day on the saddle, the perfect combination of cycling and scenery.
We made it for the 13:09 train which gave us a whole afternoon and evening in Rome - more on that tomorrow!

Florence to Rome Day 6
Spoleto to Narni
48km
Today started off with a good bit of climbing through forests out of Spoleto, before a breathtaking descent along smooth, winding roads through a tight valley. It was so enjoyable we actually cycled back up partway to do it again!
After that it was a fairly flat cycle until the climb to Narni. Another beautiful hill town, and also the most central point in Italy! As temps reached the high 20s, we found a river to cool off in - perhaps a bit too cold!
Tomorrow is the final leg of our tour, spending one last night in Rome before we head home.

Florence to Rome Day 5
Assisi to Spoleto
57km
We started off the day at a market in Assisi which only happens once per year after the Feast of St Francis!
After that it was a fun downhill ride into the valley through Spello and Bevagna with compulsory coffee stops.
The tour typically then follows a riverside path along the valley to Spoleto, but if you don’t mind a bit of a climb then you can detour up to Montefalco for lunch. It’s a steep but rewarding climb, with fantastic panoramic views and the chance to buy a unique bottle of wine from the source!
Once back down on the cycle path it’s a smooth and easy ride to Spoleto. There we had a wander around the steep, hillside town, making sure to see the famous Ponte delle Torre bridge.

Florence to Rome Day 3
Passignano sul Trasimeno to Perugia
37km
A shorter day on the saddles today so we decided to spend the morning wandering around Passignano and taking the ferry to Isola Trasimeno, a beautiful island out on the lake.
The cycling itself was mostly uphill today, but the views at lunch in Magione and once we arrived in the hilltop city of Perugia were more than worth the climb!

Florence to Rome Day 2
Arezzo to Passignano del Trasimeno
62km
Our day started off with a one hour transfer from Florence to Arezzo where we picked up our bikes and set off on our longest day of cycling.
It’s a day of gorgeous scenery, passing through southern Tuscany into Umbria, mostly on very quiet country lanes. At 50km you’re in for a treat as Lake Trasimeno opens up below you, with the option to stop for lunch or a drink at a lovely restaurant before the descent to the lake for the final journey into Passignano sul Trasimeno.
The area is rich in culture and history and is where Hannibal defeated the Romans in 217 BC!
