Knoydart is definitely regarded as one of the most committing mountainous areas in Scotland. This weekend saw us cover 58km and climbed 4000m with two nights camping. It’s not the distances or ascent that make this expedition tough though - it’s the rugged landscape (often pathless), hostile vegetation (looking at you bracken!) and the challenge of getting there that set it apart from a standard weekend expedition. The weather was fabulous on Saturday but didn’t quite hold for Sunday making for a bit of slippery scrambling and the bog trotting/bracken bashing ended in rather wet feet, then legs, then pants with increasing vegetation height 🤣 packing up and carrying an abandoned tent on top of our own gear added to the challenge! All in a fantastic weekend. Huge well done.

Now to let the feet recover before doing it all again in Glen Affric next weekend 👇

Our first Kintail trip of the year was a weekend of two halves.

Saturday was supposed to be an adventure along the South Glenshiel Ridge but strong winds and a completely bizarre dump of snow wiped that off the cards. An attempt of the Carn Ghluasaid trio along the road was also cut short. It’s disappointing having to turn back but it’s something we need to accept in Scotland. Sometimes the weather wins and the hills are going nowhere! Thanks to all for being so good about it.

Today though 😍 Ciste Dubh came up with the goods. A bit breezy but views for miles. Such an underrated wee beauty!

We’re back in Kintail later this summer heading for other classics like the Sisters and Brothers.

Almost don’t want to comment on the weather we’ve had for expeds so far this year 🫣

The Ben Alder 6 were just so good that we didn’t get back for dinner until almost 10pm - not because of the pace or the challenge but because being sat on the tops was just too good an option!

The Monar Munros ⛰️⛰️⛺️⛰️⛰️⛰️

An absolutely epic weekend on all accounts for Callum, Bob and Vicky…. Weekends in the mountains just don’t get better than this. Well done all and a special mention to Bob entering single figures on his countdown to compleating the Munros!

This is easily the toughest expedition we have on the calendar this year on account of the distance, ascent and the added challenge of carrying your kit in the heat!

What a weekend. Choosing 10 photos was tough! 📸

On Friday night the light show kept Cat and Alex up late before a baking two days in the Fannichs. 9 Munros in a weekend is a seriously tough challenge made harder by the heat. An amazing show by a golden eagle started the weekend and the weather held until the very end of the day on Sunday before torrential rain and thunder rolled in.

Meanwhile Debbie was out on Saturday in Glen Etive in the sunshine. This summit trio was a route requested after the Starav trip was cut short due to an incoming storm last summer. Great to see a plan come together!

Thanks everyone for being awesome!

Heading camping this bank holiday weekend?

Read our first blog on ‘how to actually enjoy wild camping.’ ⛺️

Wild camping is without doubt one of the most freeing adventures we can seek out. Our day to day lives can become so busy that stopping to really be quiet, mindful and in our own time is so important. It's no wonder that wild camping has seen an increase in popularity. That said, there are so many t...

A last minute spot has become available on our expedition to the Fisherfields this weekend.

The weather is looking good and we won't be back here until 2025.
Can't think of a better way to spend a long bank holiday weekend!

The Far North didn’t disappoint for the first of our summer hillwalking weekends. Ben Hope, Ben Klibreck, Conival and Ben More Assynt. We were rewarded on all 3 days with gorgeous views despite the rather uninspiring forecasts.

I also managed a trip to the Forsinard Flows which I’ve been keen to do for years.

Well done all - the legs are nicely warmed up for summer 2024 now!

An Introduction to (really) Wild Camping! ⛺️

How many seasons can you spot in the photos? Sunshine, rain, snow, wind…. A true Scottish Spring!

What a great but testing first wild camp for our group this weekend. Everything was thrown at this bunch and they can go away confident that they can handle it.

Special thanks to for getting his feet cold crossing the river.

Well done all! The 2024 adventure season has officially started.

Incredible spring weather for a day in the hills, terrible weather for a Silver NNAS course! 🥈

Silver is where candidates are introduced to bearings to enable them to get off the beaten track. It can be tempting to focus solely on bearings but Silver is all about devising the lowest risk navigation strategy for the conditions.

Well done to Claire, Graham, Lesley, Matt and Paul for learning and demonstrating all the silver skills over the weekend. Happy practising all! 🥈

Only a couple of weeks until our Spring/Summer walking programme kicks off! How is it almost April already?

Seriously tough conditions for Josiah leading our winter skills weekend.

A huge thaw overnight and high winds made the choice of location key. The group got a taste of the main skills required for a day out in winter and were complete naturals.

Sunday was a completely different game and with 110mph winds forecast on the plateau the only option was to spend the day looking at avalanche theory and practical navigation. For reference, that’s the kind of wind speeds that make a category 2 hurricane!

Hands down the most important winter skill to learn is when to turn back or, in this case, when to stay well away from the mountains. It’s frustrating, especially if you’ve travelled a long way to get to them, but those hills are going nowhere.

Thanks Josiah for leading the course!

Some highlights from 2023 for International Mountain Day.

This year’s theme is ‘Restoring Mountain Ecosytems’ and we have a number of excellent organisations working to protect and enhance mountain environments right here in Scotland.

What can you do?

Consider supporting one of these organisations like the who do incredible work in protecting and restoring the places we love.

Be sure to leave no trace when you visit the mountains. Even better - leave a positive trace! Pick up odd bits of litter you find and encourage others to do the same.

We can all do our bit to prevent damage to the places we love.

Today was the final walk of our ‘summer’ programme 🏁

And what a summer it’s been! The plan was the Beinn a’Ghlo trio but true to form, 2023’s weather had other plans!

It was wet underfoot and the stepping stones were a good foot under water in some parts! The wind strengthened with height and once exposed on high ground it was WILD! This didn’t dampen Jill and Julie’s spirits who kept smiling all the way to the top. They weren’t surprised or disappointed in the decision to return the same way and head for a coffee in Blair Atholl. We hunkered down behind the cairn for a bite to eat and almost forgot about the wind. Fresh gloves for everyone and off back down to shelter. On the descent I kept turning to check nobody had taken off but soon tuned in to the squeaking and giggling that said ‘all good.’

A miserable day you’d say? Not at all. A short up and down like this in wild weather can really make you appreciate the elements. Knowing when it’s time to turn around is the important thing and that’s what all of our leaders are there to do.

Now for a short break before our skills and winter adventures recommence!

Incredible we**am footage showing how the North Esk responded to the rainfall yesterday. Rivers are one of the most common hazards we face as hillwalkers and thus video illustrates why we need to treat them with extreme caution when rain is due. A river in spate only needs to be knee deep to have the potential to sweep you off your feet. This is up to 5m!

Granted this storm is a biggy but even a fraction of this raise could cause a serious risk to walkers.

We’ve called off our activities for the weekend. There are lots of people online asking ‘is it safe to do _____ this weekend?’ My opinion? The hills aren’t going anywhere. I’ll be walking the dog to a cafe at most. Stay safe this weekend folks.

❄️Snow incoming!❄️

Does this weekend’s forecast fill you with excitement or fear? It might not be the start of winter proper quite yet but it’s definitely time to starting thinking ahead!

Would you love to experience the Scottish mountains all year but don’t know how to get started?

Winter is when our mountains look their best but it’s also when they require the most skill and care.

We have winter skills courses running in the new year based in Aviemore and Glen Coe.

Our Story

Murray Wilson has over 30 years experience of hill walking, Munro bagging, hiking, trekking, scrambling, backpacking and mountaineering in the United Kingdom. Bitten by the outdoors bug as a Boy Scout, I have a real passion for the wild lands of Scotland. A member of the Mountain Training Association, qualified Mountain Leader, outdoor emergency First Aid instructor, holder of a Level 3 Award in Education and Training, NNAS accredited navigation instructor, Mountain Safety Advisor to the BBC, Duke of Edinburgh Award accredited Supervisor and Assessor, and fully insured to give you peace of mind. I specialise in long distance, self sufficient backpacking trips through remote wilderness areas of Scotland. These can be multi-day trips on recognised trails, such as the West Highland Way, the Skye Trail or a more random collection of drove roads, deerstalker tracks, coffin routes or old rights of way. I'm here to help you learn to navigate, tackle that challenging route, develop your camp craft, teach you new skills and above all, to have fun and a great day in the hills.

Over the years as the business grew, Murray couldn’t cope on his own and now relies on equally passionate and qualified friends and colleagues to support him through the year. Allan, Ron, Neil and Cat might be your guide for the day but be assured, you’ll get the same quality, passion, drive and fun as if Murray had been there himself.
