The latest LEDs in our Duo modules seemingly have a 'red' diode built in, that operates if the battery polarity is the wrong way around, as is sometime the case if using a very old pre LED Duo. We would love to claim that this is a deliberate new feature of the modules, but must concede that we have stumbled on this by accident. We have no idea if it is a permanent feature, or just the latest batch of Cree LEDs. We will see. The solution for very old reverse wired Duos remains the same ..... just turn the batteries around in the battery holder, +ve to -ve and vice versa.
