We 💚 wind!

To celebrate Wind Energy Week 2024, we hosted pupils from St Joseph’s Primary School (Fife) at our Aikengall Wind Farm in East Lothian. The pupils learnt about wind turbines from our Operations Manager Robb Lynch, and about the economic benefits of wind energy from our BeGreen Community Coordinator, Anouska Woods.

Harnessing the next generation of green talent, by inspiring young people, is key to securing the future of wind energy in the UK. RenewableUK states that onshore wind could support over 27,000 jobs by 2030… could one of those jobs be yours?

It’s only 6 days until Scotsheep 2024!🐏💚

Scotsheep, organised by the National Sheep Association, is a highlight of the agricultural calendar. This year, it’s taking place at which hosts our Aikengall Wind Farm, a 48MW scheme which was commissioned in 2009.

With seminars, 200 trade stands, and interesting demonstrations throughout the day, Scotsheep will be an amazing event that we are proud to sponsor. We are hugely looking forward to it — come and say hi on the day!

Chester University student completes 5-week placement with CWL! 📚💚

Millie, a student from Chester University, completed a 5-week Work Based Learning placement with us at our Head Office. Within our Projects Team, the placement gave Millie practical knowledge of renewable energy; she explored important software such as ArcGIS and developed her knowledge about wind and solar energy, which will help her explore this field further in the future.

And, to top it all off, she visited our Sanquhar Wind Farm to learn about the Operations side of the business. We wish you all the best for the future, Millie!

CWL make £500 donation to Dementia Dog Project 🐶💙

Community Windpower is delighted to have made a £500 donation to the fantastic Dementia Dog Project, a collaboration between Alzheimer’s Scotland and Dogs for Good. It is heartwarming and amazing to see the impact that these dogs can have on the individuals they are placed with, whether they are providing assistance, comfort, or therapy. Anouska, our BeGreen Community Coordinator, and Eldon our BeGreen Energy Assessor, have see first hand the impact that Lenny, a dementia support dog, has had on locals Jeanette and her late husband Jon.
Anouska said: “It was a pleasure to have been invited to the Spring Gathering organised by the Dementia Dog Project. We learned so much about what they do and the huge difference they are making to people’s lives. Thank you to everyone that is involved.”

£1,500 grant helps support publication of Dalry heritage booklet! 📒🏘️

The grant, from the Dalry Parish Boundary Trust on behalf of Community Windpower, supported the Bypass Art Group’s project. The booklet complements the existing heritage board in the centre of Dalry, which tells the story of Dalry’s growth, notable residents, and much more. Now, anyone visiting (or those that already live locally!) can take a walk around Dalry’s streets and they can use the booklet to enrich their understanding.

St Palladius wowed by Dalgarven Mill visit! 🤩👗

Dalgarven Mill is a restored Victorian mill in Kilwinning that is home to the Museum of Ayrshire Country Life and Costume. Their Costume Collection is made up of 2,000 pieces, out of which they select items for a rotation of amazing exhibitions. The children were wowed by the entire visit (funded by CWL through the Dalry Parish Boundary Trust), especially the intricate designs of the 1920s dresses and shirts, and the huge array of other items including dolls houses, antique hoovers, lights, and tools. We are so glad they had an amazing time and learnt so much!

CWL supports fourth phase of outreach programme with Let’s Get Sporty! ⚽️🏅🏀

Now in its fourth year, the partnership between Community Windpower (CWL) and Let’s Get Sporty (LGS) aims to boost the mental and physical health of the hundreds of children that take part, whilst also providing a way for them to socialise and make new friends. The first three phases of the programme, run since 2021, reached a total of 1700 pupils in 10 schools across Dumfries and Galloway.

Headed up by Programme Manager Dayne Moore at LGS, the huge range of sports on offer includes netball, football, athletics, hockey, and rugby. This mix of activities develops fitness and coordination skills, and pupils from Beattock Primary, Moffat Primary, Johnstonebridge Primary, and Applegarth & Hutton Primary will enjoy the sessions during this fourth phase. The sessions are fully funded in Dumfries and Galloway by CWL, where we have our proposed Scoop Hill Community Wind Farm development.

CWL funding provides fun day out for Korosten kids!
For children of Korosten, a historic city in Northern Ukraine, the months of war have been incredibly difficult. Using funds raised by Community Windpower this year, a representative of Chernobyl Children’s Life Line (CCLL) organised a much-needed fun day out for a group of children 💚 🇺🇦
They visited a water park, an animal zoo park, and enjoyed a McDonald’s lunch, allowing them to be kids again and have a laugh with their siblings and friends. We are so glad the children had an amazing time!

Community Windpower, through BeGreen Dalry, has provided support to North Ayrshire Foodbank for over a decade 💚This year was no different, with a £3,000 contribution from CWL that supported NA Foodbank’s amazing ‘Make a Meal of It’ and ‘Junior Chef’ programmes.

Craig Crosthwaite, Development Manager at NA Foodbank, said: “The impact is essentially two-fold. That is reducing hunger and reducing household stress. It is hoped that the online sessions also create an opportunity for networking and the temporary support of a community cooking together.”
CWL were delighted to provide this support, and please stay tuned to hear about this year’s upcoming Christmas Hamper programme, also organised through the amazing NA Foodbank! 🎄

Just to say a great big thank you to everyone that has donated to our Kids Love Clothes donation point recently! We managed to squeeze it all in to two cars and dropped it off at their main depot in Edinburgh yesterday. It's an incredible place and meeting all the volunteers that were helping out was so nice. Although we're not sure they liked us filling up a crate that they'd just sorted through! Well done to all involved, this will help in so many ways! Thank you!

CWL provides £12,455 for solar panel installation at West Barns Village Hall! 🌞 ⚡️
West Barns Village Hall, on the outskirts of Dunbar, is a community hub providing a space for bingo, fitness classes and gymnastics, Rainbows and Brownies meetings, and many other fun activities. By approaching BeGreen for a grant, the volunteers at the village hall are now able to boost their energy efficiency and green credentials by installing solar panels on their south and east facing roofs.

We are delighted to facilitate this grant, as promoting the use of green energy is incredibly important to us. We are keen to keep up with the progress of these installations!

Looking back on the Galloway Country Fair 2023! 🏕️💚
As a main sponsor of the Galloway Country Fair, held at Drumlanrig Castle on 12th-13th August, the Community Windpower (CWL) marquee was an important place of engagement and education to those who visited us. Alongside other striking acts such as stunt biker ‘Flyin Ryan’, horseback acrobats ‘Riders of the Storm’, and a thrilling Lamb National, we showcased our commitment to the host communities of our operational wind farms, and the communities which may become hosts in the future.
Overall, it was a fantastic weekend and we hope all those who attended had a wonderful time!

We are delighted to announce that our Sanquhar II Community Wind Farm was today consented by the Scottish Ministers!

The 308MW scheme will consist of 44 turbines, 42 of these with a maximum blade tip height of 200 metres, and 2 wind turbines with a maximum blade tip height of 149 metres. The scheme will be located on the border of Dumfries and Galloway and East Ayrshire, 6.5km south-west of Sanquhar.

Sanquhar II Community Wind Farm will provide extensive environmental, social, and economic benefits. It will:

- Generate enough electricity to power 335,000 homes per annum 💡
- Offset 546,000 tonnes of CO2 per year 🌍
- Generate over £350 million gross value added (GVA) during the development, construction, and operational phases 🚧
- Support over 1,600 job years in Scotland
- Provide over £100 million in business rates to Dumfries and Galloway and East Ayrshire Councils over its operational lifetime

Rod Wood, Managing Director at Community Windpower, said: “We are thrilled that Sanquhar II has been consented. This scheme will provide over 300MW of clean, green electricity, taking Scotland one big step forward to achieving net zero by 2045. Overall, the project represents a substantial investment in the Scottish economy.”
