On This Day 6th September 1651: After losing the Battle of Worcester, King Charles II had to hide and spent the night in an oak tree at Boscobel. Many pubs in England called 'The Royal Oak' refer to this famous moment in time.

After the Interregnum, King Charles restored the throne and renovated his father's burial place at Windsor Castle. Today in the Upper Ward of Windsor Castle you can see a statue of King Charles II (pictured to the right), which upon closer inspection looks remarkably similar to Julius Caesar!

On This Day: 24th August 1200 - King John married Isabella of Angoulême in Bordeaux Cathedral, despite the fact that she was already betrothed to a French Nobleman called Hugh de Lusignan.

This marriage resulted in King Phillip II Augustus confiscating John's lands in France, leading to a long war which infuriated the English Barons and became one of the primary reasons for Magna Carta being imposed upon King John 15 years later.

Today you can see Magna Carta in the Chapter House of Salisbury Cathedral.. pictured here on this fine summer's day
