⭐ Stargazing on the Isle of Wight. ⭐

The Island has some of the darkest skies in the UK, with low levels of light pollution. ✨

Some of the best locations are found on the Southwest Coast along Military Road. However, there are places across the Island that can boast dark skies. 🌠

On a clear night when the sun has completely set and there is no moonlight, pack something to lie on (a blanket or camping mat will do) along with food, drink and warm clothes and enjoy the beauty of the night-time sky. 🌟

Don’t forget to bring a star-spotter guide and compass to help you find constellations! 🌌

We’ve been busy carrying lots of delicious Isle of Wight sweetcorn to the mainland! 🌽

Sweetcorn thrives in the Island’s fertile soil, benefiting from the region’s mild climate and abundant sunshine. ☀️

Local farms cultivate with care, resulting in sweet, tender kernels that are a highlight of summer harvests. Freshly picked sweetcorn from the Island is celebrated for its rich flavour and juicy crunch. 🚜

So, while you’re on the Island in September, make sure you pop into a local farm shop to enjoy it fresh from the fields – great if you’re staying in self-catering accommodation. Try your corn smothered in oak smoked garlic butter from The Garlic Farm, it’s a delicious combination! 🧄 Barfoots

🚨 Solar Power Update! 🚨

We have installed solar panels at our Gunwharf, Lymington and Fishbourne ports. 🔋

In the first six months of 2024, 52,085kW of power was generated, enough to boil 473,501 litres of water for 1,894,004 cups of tea or coffee (based on a 250ml serving)! ☕

We are also looking at installing solar panels on suitable vessels. ⛴️

🛟 Ryde lifeguards go electric! 🔌

We awarded £7,500 to Waterside Community Trust from our Green Innovation Fund, towards the cost of an electric-powered all-terrain vehicle. 💚

“Our new buggy will transform our operations,” says Todd. “Our lifeguards will use it to tow our beach wheelchairs, an inshore rescue boat and other equipment, perform patrols and much more in both Ryde and Sandown, while helping us to reduce our carbon emissions and look after the amazing Island we live on.” 🏝️

The Red Lion, pictured, making her way up the Lymington River to the Town Station Slipway.

Although for many years the Lymington - Yarmouth route was served by local rowing boats, in 1830, steam was introduced to the route by the 51-tone wooden hulled Glasgow.

The Red Lion joined in 1858, at two years old, after being brought in anticipation of increased traffic due to the new railway!

She was a single-masted, sloop-rigged vessel with a rounded stern and a 29-horse powered engine.

She gave a good service until she was sold again in 1880, where she served for 6 more years as a tug at South Shields.

Inspirational Islanders: Ryde Sea Cadets 🌊

Ryde Sea Cadets aim to give young people an experience that will help them grow in confidence and develop valuable life skills in a safe and friendly environment. 💪

“The Island is a great place to live, as we are surrounded by water so there’s lots of places for the Sea Cadets to go out on boats!

We might be biased, but our favourite beach has to be our very own one in Ryde! We have spent many evenings over the summers on Ryde beach. The cadets learn leadership skills, play games and practise their seamanship skills.

Thanks to the sponsorship from Wightlink, we are able to participate in competitions, regattas, and training on the mainland.” ❤️

Ever heard of the Solent Seascape Project? It’s a big deal for our local waters and the ocean as a whole! 🌊

This initiative has just been given a thumbs-up as an official United Nations Decade Action. 👍

Which means this project is now part of a global movement to protect and restore our marine environments. 🌍

🎂 Happy anniversary Victoria of Wight! 🎂

Today marks 6 years since Victoria of Wights first day in service. ⛴️

Our flagship ferry isn’t only the newest and biggest addition to our fleet but also monumental in making change to the maritime industry. 🔋

The first hybrid ferry in England, she combines battery power with conventional engines to sail using 17% less fuel than the next largest ferry on the route, St Clare. She can even generate her own electricity! 💡
