The Valley of the Oranges

The Soller Valley is known by many names. ‘The Valley of the Oranges’ is the one most heard. We are at the beginning of the orange harvests now. You note I am using the plural as there is more than than one harvest in the course of the year. Many people prefer the oranges harvested at a particular time.

The season starts at the end of October or beginning of November with the "Navelina orange". Followed by the "Navel" in January, up to the "Navel Late", which is harvested between March and June. The Canoneta is the Soller Valley’s pride and joy orange. Said to be the sweetest and most juicy.

In January the vistas of the Soller Valley are full of heavy-laden trees, bearing this most important fruit, of the Soller Valley.

Well, at least there's one good thing: you'll only need a visa if you want to stay for 90 days!

Dear Soller Friends

Monday 23rd November 2020 and its sunny

We wake up to the day the new testing rules are being implemented at Palma airport. Some travelling here have to have had a clear Covid test, no more than 72 hours ago. Even though these are the rules, airport installations for testing those who haven’t managed to obey them are now in place. Testing at the airport comes at a cost including fines for those having got this far without it. New normal changes every day and we are all confused.

This weekend, under the rules, I attended a wonderful concert. Churches desperate to have Christmas Fairs and gatherings largely couldn’t. Some churches bucked the trend and had outdoor patio Christmas Fairs instead. From this weekend children’s entertainments and theatres will be open with a 50% capacity. More announcements on slightly lifting the rules for the Christmas period are set to come. I know this is not just in Spain, we hear it is the same in the UK.

All I know for certain is the day when all rules, understandable or not, come to an end there will be massive celebrations and parties which will last for days. The public by and large do what they are told. Our opinions of our fellow man are influenced by headlines but most want to do their bit.

Vaccines are the story of now and today I will have one. A Flu jab that is! The story of flu in Mallorca right now is that it is a non event. All the mask wearing and staying home more than normal has halted flu transmission. The future vaccine talk is of a combination of flu and Covid being the new normal.

Too much science for a Monday morning for me so it’s a return to the ordinary. Things to do in Soller, people to see and bills to pay. My trip to the nurse with the needle later and then the day will unfold all on its own.
