Glenys Garnett Creative Images www.ggcreativeimages.co.uk is a photography website and blog showcasing the best of my work and the other services I offer. I live and work in Wakefield as a full time freelance Photographer, Artist and Graphic Designer and work exclusively in the digital medium. I have a love of nature; the mountains, the sea, animals, birds, trees and I try to find a way to present

an image to the viewer that will allow them to see the world through my eyes. I am often awed by the complexity of nature and how it presents itself in form, texture and a myriad of colours. All of my life experiences are reflected through my imagery, and this continues to shape me as a photographer and artist. There isn’t a message to my work other than to present it in a form that can be enjoyed and occasionally put on the wall, and I’m happy with that.

As much as I love the colours of autumn and winter there is always a tinge of sadness to it for me, a sign of things fading and passing, like the last glow of the sun before it slips below the horizon. It sums up my thoughts and mood at the moment. I've always loved trees and doing woodland photography has always given me that sense of tranquility and calm, being in and part of nature. There is no secret or formula to this type of photography but it can be difficult to cut through the messiness of this environment to create meaningful compositions. My advice, as always, is to keep it simple, find the beauty from within, look for the light and try to express your thoughts and feelings of the beauty that surrounds us. I find positivity when I make these images and try to maintain a sense of optimism that things and times change and we just have to learn to bend and flow with whatever we have to deal with, just like nature.

On my way home from Newsome today I stopped at a little wood near Thunder Bridge for a little wander mainly because there are some lovely Beech trees that always look good in Autumn. I must remember to come back on a misty/foggy day

Had a drive over to Newsome today to check out the old derelict Newsome Mill, I think some locals are trying to save the clock tower but it looks well beyond repair to me however it's always nice to see our old heritage buildings saved and put to new use. I hope they manage it. Made mostly straight shots then popped on the combo ND+Black Mist filter for some ICM and multiple exposures. Found a great place for coffee and brunch, the Northlight Cafe at Brooke's Mill.

These were taken with the Fuji 35mm f1.4 lens, it's one of the older ones but remains one of my favourite lenses. It's not a perfect lens but the character and filmic quality to it means I usually always have it with me most of the time for day to day to shooting. Coupled with a Fuji film sim in this case Grizzly Ride gives me a low saturation vintage look to the image.
It's even more apparent in the second set where I've also added a black mist filter, which is basically a diffusion filter that adds a bit of softness and diffuses any harsh light and used a Kodachrome film sim to add a vintage look to the colour.

Had a proper go with the multiple exposure on the Ricoh GR iiix this afternoon and I'm really happy with the way it works. Very intuitive and easy to use, these are taken using the Bright blend mode, nothing special but just an example of what it can do, and they have been tweaked a little in snapseed otherwise sooc jpgs. The added bonus is it creates a RAW file alongside the jpg as long as you have set to shoot RAW+JPG in the file format settings. Can't wait to do some city stuff with it.

I've been considering buying a small compact camera for some time now, not as a replacement for my Fuji but mainly something pocketable to take with me when walking the dog and generally out about when I don't want to carry a camera bag.
I considered upgrading my phone but tbh I've never found them to be the right fit for me for doing photography, you are often dependent on apps to do some of the functions that are not integral to the phone camera. They are really a multi-function device that happens to have a camera, which for many will be fine but not for me and far too pricey for what they do.
With this in mind I have gone for a Ricoh GR iiix compact and I have to say it is a little beast of a camera and more than fits the bill. It is has a 27mm(40mm equivalent on the 24mp apsc sensor) lens and for me is a perfect walkabout...has multiple exposure with 3 blend modes, inbuilt ND filter and customisable colour/bw simulations for different filmic looks to the jpgs. Had my first walk out with it this morning and wified some images over to the tablet and I have to say I'm more than satisfied with the quality of the images. The black and white files are lovely and I think I'm going to enjoy doing some street photography with it, trying out the snap focus which looks a great feature and makes the camera a real point and shoot.
Btw: today we met the little border terrier on the right who is the gorgeous Enya and is 16 years young

What is it that stops you from creating your own unique images and art?
You look at someone else's work, think it is brilliant and you tell yourself you will never be that good, you lose motivation and think, what is the point, and so you give up.
You are correct though, you will never be like them, you will never create the way they do or make the same things that they do.
You will make something just as good, but it will be different and unique to you but what you might not know is that the person you admire is using a secret sauce.
They have stopped doing what they don't like and started embracing what they love and enjoy and developed a creative flow that works for them alone, but it won't work for you.
When you work this way, with no inhibitions and get fully into the flow you will start to create work that you enjoy making that is unique to you and your experiences, and others will see that in your work.

Stop comparing yourself too much to others and then despairing when you can't make work like them, it will just stifle your creativity and lead to dissatisfaction. Have fun with your photography, have fun with your art, but more than anything, make it for you

There are often times when I feel uninspired or not sure where I want to go with my photography. We are all familiar with that phrase "I lost my mojo", A dictionary definition of mojo is magic charm or spell. Losing your mojo perfectly describes that state in which you lack both positive feelings and negative feelings, when everything feels boring and uninteresting. At times like that I often ask myself "who are you photographing for?" It just so happens a youtube video popped up in my feed the other day and I would recommend a watch (link below). I've been following Graham Williams - Photgraphic Conversations for some time now and he has an easy quiet way of explaining and sharing inciteful pieces that are both easy listening and educational.
I usually overcome my blocks by picking up the camera, and going out looking for uninteresting things to photograph in and around my environment, a sort of re-training my eye to see things in a different way, and the things that I would normally overlook. I might decide to shoot in black and white or a specific aperture, or anything to change my perspective on the everyday around me. I've walked past the broken bench a number of times and never thought to photograph it, but in black and white, and shallow dof f1.8 it takes on an abandoned melancholy feel to me as do the other subjects.

Imperfection is so much better than perfection, especially in photography. We seem to have lost the charm and innocence in the demand for perfection in photographs, perfectly exposed, pin sharp, smooth with no grain, noise is a no-no. I often look at images from famous and not so famous photographers and the thing that makes them stand out for me is the way they make me feel, the emotion, the feelings they evoke. Photography doesn't represent reality it is just an allusion to it, so create your own aesthetic, give yourself the freedom to be unique and make images that fit your vision, not someone else's.
I made this image at one of my favourite go to locations when we have a foggy day. The overhanging small branches are not pin sharp and I added additional grain to it to add atmosphere, but more than anything I wanted a Japanese feel with a bit of wabi sabi thinking behind it.

One thing I rarely do is delete images on the first viewing unless they are so very obviously no good for anything, and this is the reason why.
My initial instinct was to bin the original image of this. I took it in Leeds when a bike courier flew by me, camera up quick, a grab shot, nothing in focus, and a bit of a failure, or was it.
Regardless of the lack of focus the movement and urgency in it captured my imagination and decided to pop it into PS to add some additional motion blur and then reveal a few details from the original image. It's all wrong regarding composition and focus but photography isn't always about that, it's about capturing an emotion, a feeling or a sense of something that happened, a decisive moment.

I'm quite impressed with the way the Photoshop generative tool handled my image to create this digital watercolour version. It was very hit and miss giving me some strange results but a couple were excellent, one of which I've used here. I have also added another watercolour layer of my own over the top for some added paint splatter.

I had to tweak a few things to get it just right and found it was very dependent on the image you choose, some just didn't work very well at all, but got a result in the end

I've been pondering on starting a new project making stranger portraits as a way of getting me out of my comfort zone. I want the interaction so my plan is to ask first, explain what I'm doing, hand out out a business card and or show them my work. It's quite hard to stop and ask a stranger for their photo but I found having the dog is sometimes a good ice-breaker.
I only did a couple yesterday when having a lovely amble around Leeds Centre with a friend Lorraine Grey, but it was fairly painless, the worst they can do is so no and I can move on.
I may mix it with other stuff, some dog/owner portraits and/or some more creative ideas so I'll see how it goes.

Just to emphasise and illustrate what I've been saying in my previous posts about "creative photography" as a genre.
The left image is a made in-camera double exposure, minor edit in Lightroom
The right image is entirely made in Photoshop. I've used the original left image and copied the layer and applied some motion blur to it, selected and cut-out the playhouse lettering and brought it to the front and added some additional text.

The left image is a Photograph
The right mage is Photographic Illustration, Digital Art, Digital Composite, whatever you want to call it but it is no longer photography

Here's a question: If I print the right hand image does it then become a photograph?

I don't really like the term "creative photography" as a genre especially when it includes terms like "altered reality or composite". I prefer to see it as a state of mind the photographer takes with them into the process of making photographs or creating art.
That allows for the photographer who is innovative and creative with straight photography alongside the more technique oriented who use ICM or multiple exposure etc.
It does not however include conceptual images created in Photoshop that for me crossover into Photographic Illustration and or Graphic Design. I never call my work photography once I have crossed over that line.
These are a selection of straight images where I am trying to be creative in both thought and process, expressing my daily life, looking for different angles, looking up, looking down, looking for form, shape, colour (or lack of) and structure and trying to find ways of making the mundane more interesting. Generally playing and experimenting and finding images that other people don't see which is fundamental to being creative.

I'm of the firm belief that being creative as a photographer has little to do with the techniques we use and everything to do with the way see the world and how we use the camera to realise our vision. The key to this is to learn as many in-camera techniques as possible, like having a toolbox that you can dip into every now and then, and using them with purpose rather than just for the sake of it.
Most techniques are not difficult to learn, the difficult part is using them in ways that are unique, interesting and that fit with your vision. Remember copy techniques but don't copy peoples work, photograph your own vision not someone else's.
These are all in-camera images, just basic edits in Lightroom

Some collages I've made from images I collected following a recent trip into Leeds with a photo group. I often have a basic idea of what I want to make so I use the opportunity to collect potential images when I'm out and about. It means that even if I'm not feeling very creative I can still take pictures that I think might be useful to me later. The process for me is quite organic and I might do a few variations before I get something I'm happy with, often sitting on them for a few days and returning to them with a fresh eye.

The most important ability in photography is the art of seeing what other people miss, to notice something in the mundane and find a way of making it interesting in a photograph. People often stop and ask, have you seen something or what are looking at, they don't understand why I am fascinated by the reflections and ripples in the water under the boardwalk, so they move on, because they don't see it. They leave me alone to capture a never repeated pattern.

I've never felt comfortable doing street photography where people are recognisable so I try to be creative with my approach. Long exposure, blur, camera movement, some of the techniques that can add to the busy nature of a street scene like this rainy day in York
