Recognise any parts of Warwick on this map from the 1600s? πŸ—ΊοΈ

This incredible map was drawn up by the famed cartographer John Speed, who was well acquainted with Fulke Greville, owner of Warwick Castle at the time.

We can see the old bridge that ran through Mill Street to the bottom of the Castle (now ruins in the middle of the River Avon).

What street names are still around today?

πŸ–ΌοΈ A lost painting of Henry VIII has been "found" in Warwick!

The painting currently hangs in Old Shire Hall (aka the former County Courts), and was painted in the 1590s by Ralph Sheldon.

Best of all? It was randomly spotted by Art Historian Dr Adam Busiakiewicz in a photo on Twitter, who saw it and must have thought "isn't that one of the rare paintings assembled for Weston House in Warwickshire 400 years ago?"

Here's how to identify the different "gates" in Warwick.

The gates were medieval entrances to the walled town of Warwick. The walls were eventually demolished, but the gates remained on West Gate and East Gate.

Sadly, Northgate was demolished too, and Southgate went on to LOSE THE EUROS AT THE LAST HURDLE!

Planning on visiting Warwick to see the Lord Leycester?

Warwick has a rich military history, from the mighty Warwick Castle to our very own Lord Leycester almshouses, and the Royal Warwickshire Regiment.

We've even got ties to the warship HMS Warwick! Our town and county have a deep connection to the military, and we love to celebrate it.

We've teamed up with local museums, venues, volunteers, and the Town Council to create the Military Heritage Trail. It's a fantastic way to explore eight amazing spots in Warwick, learn about the regiments that called this place home, and honour the brave men and women who served.

Some museums are free to enter, while others have a small fee. Every penny goes towards keeping these museums going and preserving our town's military history for future generations.

You can grab a free copy of the trail at the Warwick Visitor Information Centre on Jury Street, or at any of the participating venues.

Let us know how you get on!

Let's bring back traditional Folk Football for the Euros!

Back in the day, football matches in England had goals 3 miles apart, over 1000 players and a ball made out of a pig's bladder.

Sounds way better than England's last performance...

In the National Portrait Gallery is this picture of the plotters of the Gunpowder Plot, but how are they connected to Warwick?

On the night of the 5th November, after Guy Fawkes was captured, word soon got back to his fellow conspirators: THE PLOT WAS RUMBLED!

Catesby, Rookwood, Bates, Percy and the Wright brothers FLED London on their horses.

But they needed to get further away, without taking breaks. But their horses would soon collapse of exhaustion if they constantly rode them.

So they broke into WARWICK CASTLE! And stole all the fast horses that were in the stables, so they could keep on riding.

What happened next? Come on our tour and you might just find out!
