Epiphany, Theophánia, Θεοφάνεια

Today (6th January) is the twelfth day of Christmas and whilst New Year is already in full swing for many Greeks it begins today! Today signifies the official end of Christmas called Epiphany or Phōta, Φώτων in Greek meaning The Light.

It’s traditional to gather around a body of water, which is blessed by a priest who then throws in a special cross. Young men jump into the water to find it! The person lucky enough to find it is said to be blessed with good luck for the whole year.

Epiphany is one of the most meaningful celebrations for The Greek Orthodox Church. In Western Churches the 6th of January is also known as “Three Kings Day”, celebrating their visit to see baby Jesus.

Pomegranate Smashing

Throughout the Christmas holidays, pomegranates (ρόδι, ródi), an ancient red fruit that has been the symbol of fertility, prosperity and regeneration for thousands of years in Greece and in Greek mythology, are hung above the front door.
At midnight on New Year’s Eve, all the lights in the house are switched off and the pomegranate is smashed on the ground by the front door. It is believed that the more seeds that spill out, the more likely the new year will be full of good fortune, health and prosperity. 🇬🇷

Father Chritmas 🎅 Άγιος Βασίλειος 🎅 Ágios Vasíleios

December 6th celebrates Saint Nicholas of Myra's feast day and is celebrated across Europe, it's the real history of what we call now Father Christmas.

Bishop Nicholas was known for his generosity to those in need, his love for children, and his concern for sailors and ships. In Europe, it is customary for children to put their shoes out the night before to see what they would find from Saint Nicholas in the morning (usually filled with gold chocolate coins).

Where's your favourite place to buy Baklava?
Or maybe try and bake your own ⤵️

Oxi Day (or sometimes Ohi Day) is celebrated throughout Greece, Cyprus and the Greek communities around the world on 28 October each year.

Oxi Day commemorates the rejection by Greek Prime Minister Ioannis Metaxas to allow the invasion of Greece by the Italians during World War II.

Traditionally, Oxi Day is celebrated with parades and wreath laying at military memorials. Most public buildings and residences are decorated with Greek flags. 🇬🇷

Liston Λιστόν
Can you even say that you have been to Corfu if you haven't been to Corfu Town and meandered down the Liston? 🇬🇷 8:30am yesterday and deserted temps only in the early 30's polli zesti Πολλή ζέστη 🥵🇬🇷

The Liston was constructed during the French rule in the Ionian Islands (1807–1814) imitating the rue de Rivoli. It is one of the most popular sites in the city. Its name comes from the Venetian liston, referring to the long marble slabs used for paving the streets.
