Epiphany, Theophánia, Θεοφάνεια
Today (6th January) is the twelfth day of Christmas and whilst New Year is already in full swing for many Greeks it begins today! Today signifies the official end of Christmas called Epiphany or Phōta, Φώτων in Greek meaning The Light.
It’s traditional to gather around a body of water, which is blessed by a priest who then throws in a special cross. Young men jump into the water to find it! The person lucky enough to find it is said to be blessed with good luck for the whole year.
Epiphany is one of the most meaningful celebrations for The Greek Orthodox Church. In Western Churches the 6th of January is also known as “Three Kings Day”, celebrating their visit to see baby Jesus.
