GOING GREEN!!! I am sure most people will be shocked at how green I am! But I think it also stacks up financially...
Bought an Air Source Heat Pump to replace aging oil boiler last Sept. Despite the old Cottage it works fine if used with timers and digital thermostats etc. New extension is super insulated of course and has underfloor heating. U/f heating in old Cottage too.
Added 20 more solar panels - total 28
As its a listed building we've clamped them direct to the flat roof. Not optimal for energy but hopefully not toooo bad either.
Added 3 Givenergy 8.2kw batteries
With the ashp we get Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) payments over 7 years. Will pay a big chunk of capital cost.
Old solar panels get some feed in tariff but not the new ones
Since system completed a couple of weeks ago we are paying less than 50p a day for grid electricity and feeding a lot back to the grid that we don't get paid for. I need to look at alternative tariffs like Octopus who pay for excess elec sent to grid.
So far on the sunniest day at peak production we produced at rate 7Kw. But on grey day that fell to between 1 & 2Kw.
There is online real time info with all sort of data on elec produced, load used on house, load to/from battery, load to/from grid. Quite addictive!! Also available on app.
Will be interesting to see how much of our winter usage we can produce ourselves.
Next... an electric car?!
