This is great news for our beautiful city 👏

We all know York is an amazing place with world-class heritage, but it's always nice when it gets internationally recognised ❤️

Today's announcement that York's historic city centre has been chosen by the Government as one of the seven UK sites in the running to gain the legendary UNESCO World Heritage Status is a major step to formerly putting York 'on the map'. It places York alongside other amazing global sites like the Taj Mahal and the Great Barrier Reef.

And maps and substrata are a good way of thinking why York is being celebrated in this nomination. Much of our city's layout speaks to us directly from the Roman legions who first laid the foundations of the city, and Viking invaders who left us with our street layout and funny street names. Much of this is preserved as archaeology under our feet. Our heritage charts an incredible 'city story' of continuous urban development, that includes amazing Norman and Medieval architectural masterpieces, such as The Minster and Clifford's Tower. How many other cities can claim such majestic brilliantly preserved lineage!
