Horse racing has been held in York since Roman times.
Races have even taken place on the Frozen River Ouse!
York racecourse attracts over 350,000 visitors each year and The Annual Ebor Festival, held over 4 days in August proves to be most popular.

York Racecourse Is located on an expanse of ground which has been known since pre-medieval times.
The racecourse is still sometimes referred to as "The Knavesmire". The Knavesmire was originally common pasture, belonging to the city and was also the scene of the ex*****on of the notorious highwayman, Dick Turpin, who was hanged on the 7th of April 1739.
