Current condition in Gudauri:

Artificial snow proved non-sufficient to open ski resorts for riders. At the moment ski-lifts are open only for pedestrians (ski/snowboard not allowed) and highly likely will remain so until the snowfall.

For beginners it’s possible to ski near New Gudauri (see 2nd photo), but snow is a bit icy.

If anything changes, we will post here with an updated info and photos.

Why to visit:
Located at the top of Lagodekhi National Park, Black Rock is a high altitude alpine lake at the border of Azerbaijan. It is known for its stunning scenery, diverse array of flora and fauna, and rich cultural heritage. There are many reasons to visit Lagodekhi National Park, including the opportunity to see rare and endangered species of plants and animals, hike in the beautiful mountainous landscape, and learn about the rich history and culture of the area.

When to visit:
Due top high altitude, place in accessible during the winter and spring, but summer and autumn is wide open for tourists.

How to visit:
The only way to reach this place is either by hiking or horseback riding. It will take 2-3 days from Lagodekhi town. If you are short in time, then you can also book a helicopter hiking tour and be back to City by the evening.

Why to visit:
If you fancy backcountry ski/snowboarding journeys without big crowds of major ski resorts, then Bakhmaro is a perfect getaway with superb snow quality all winter. You can also join catski groups for freeriding on Guria mountains.

When to visit:
Although summer is beautiful here, it's those cold months from January to April that this place becomes winter wonderland, excellent for exploring backcountry lines.

How to visit:
The only road coming from Chokhatauri town gets closed during the heavy snowfall, so you might need to organize catski transfer to your hut.

Why to visit:
Built in 9th century and recently renovated castle is the highlight of Akhaltsikhe town. Within the castle territory are: historical museum, mosque, madrasa, 9th century orthodox church, synagogue, catholic church, amphitheater, Pasha residence, citadel & medieval prison.
You can also enjoy contemporary cafes, hotel and winery.

When to visit:
Rabati castle is open for visitors 365 days, but probably the best time is autumn, when season is low, but the weather is mild.

How to visit:
Arriving in Rabati castle is straightforward - by walking or driving from Akhaltsikhe town. Accessible by any type of vehicle.

#2 - Gergeti Church

Why to visit:
At the foothills of , this iconic church is the most photographed place in Georgia. From here you can enjoy splendid panorama of the valley and town. Hike, cycle or just driving, this place is the the must to go.

When to visit:
No matter time of the year, Gergeti church is open for visitors. Summer months usually are busy, full of local and foreign tourists. Late autumn is usually the least crowdy time with spectacular views of fresh snow on the mountains. Winter months can bring snow and close the roads.

How to visit:
You can hop on a public mini-bus from Didube station in Tbilisi towards Stepantsminda. From Stepantsminda there is both, hiking and driving route going up to the church. At the moment only 4wd vehicles can drive up there, but current road renovation will make it possible for smaller vehicles to ascend too.

#1 Tsutskhvati Cave

Why to visit:
This natural cave monument has 13 floors. First and second floor has water stream going through it. Some prehistoric bows have been found here.
On higher floors have been found 50,000y old Neanderthal artefacts, as well as sacrificed animal bones and stones.

When to visit:
Check the weather before coming to Tsutskhvari cave, as during the rain the second floor, which is the one accessible by humans, can be flooded abruptly. Also, don't visit during snowfall, as walking path to the cave is steep and can be dangerous when slippery.

How to visit:
Drive from Kutasis towards Tsutskhvati village, from where you can just follow the only road eventually leading to the beginning of the trail. Road is paved, no need for SUV.

Last-minute deal for an adventure trip in Kazbegi and Khevsureti (3 August - 6 August 2022). All nights in tents.

Tour schedule:

3rd August: Driving to Stepantsminda, visiting Gudauri, mineral waters, Gergeti church and ascending to Juta village. From Juta village hiking to the bottom of Chaukhi mountain.

4th August: Hiking to Chaukhi pass, descending to Abudelauri lakes and camping near Abudelauri green lake.

5th August: Hiking from Abudelauri lakes to Roshka village and down to the main road. Car will pick you up and take you to Jomardi Adventure Park. Rafting 13km on Aragvi river and camping in the rafting camp.

6th August: Kayaking from village Tvalivi to Ananuri castle. Driving from Ananuri to Tbilisi.

Price of this trip is $443 and includes all transportations, meals, camping gear (tent, sleeping pad, sleeping bag), mountain guide, rafting & kayaking equipment, in a nutshell - you will need to bring no extra cash.
