Check out what is it like to celebrate Christmas in Georgia.
Even though Georgia is officially a secular state and we don’t have national religion, the orthodox Christianity is the most dominant religion. More than 80% of the population is orthodox Christian. Because of the calendar differences (Julian and Gregorian calendars) The catholic world celebrates Christmas according to Gregorian calendar (after pope Gregory XIII) at 25th of December and new year at 1st of January and the orthodox Christian world celebrates it according to old Julian calendar at 7th of January and new year at 14th of January. Because of the fact that catholic New year is earlier than orthodox, no one can wait until 14th of Jan. and everyone starts to celebrate new year at 1st of Jan. The 2nd of January is so called destiny day (it is believed that everything you do on this day, will be the same in upcoming year) after that 7th of Jan Christmas and finally 14th of Jan. we celebrate so called old (because it’s a new year according to old calendar) New year. This period is the most celebrated time in Georgia, people meet the new years with fireworks, different events at clubs, restaurants, concerts, etc. What is also very important is the traditional food, which is something you can try in every Georgian family. During this time we visit our relatives, friends, close people and we feast in every family we visit. We also have a candy tradition, which is about throwing sweets at every house we visit and wishing them symbolic sweet life. I already told you about the Georgian feasting tradition so you can imagine what it is like to have 2 weeks of feasting and drinking. During this time most of the Georgians are on constant hangover.
Few words about the Georgian traditional dishes too. The Christmas feast is dominated with walnut dishes. We use walnut s***e which is rich with traditional herbs and spices, where we put turkey inside. There are two kinds of different walnut dishes like this one is called “Satsivi” (საცივი) that comes with turkey and the other is called “bazhe” (ბაჟე) that comes with chicken. The pork meat in different shapes is also very popular and eggplant with walnut is another walnut dish on the table. Regarding to sweets we also have walnut sweet that is called “Gozinaki” (გოზინაყი) and it is a combination of honey and roasted walnut.
Speaking of the nut this is something we also use as a traditional New Year tree. So instead of pine, Georgians use nut tree called Chichilaki (ჩიჩილაკი). This doesn’t mean that the pine tree is not popular, but the traditional Georgian new year tree is made from nut.
