Mother Georgia basking in the glorious sunshine that has finally arrived in Tbilisi. This picture was taken from the recently renovated Lado Gudiashvili Square in Old town Tbilisi, which was transformed from a place full of life and home to many local families to a place full of mainly empty space...only time will tell if the atmosphere of old returns or if it becomes another over developed, 'touristy' part of Tbilisi.

They say that white wine is for getting drunk and red wine is for drinking to enjoy. However, i'll let you in on a little industry secret...if you want to get drunk, red wine works just as well. This particular red pairs well with good craic and anything edible.

When the climb is worth the view... What a day for a city tour! Probably one of my favourite spots in Old Town as it's a super beautiful place to sit down and survey the city. It's even better when someone can bring the history of the city alive....maybe someone like a tour guide?? 😉 Don't waste your time trying to figure out what it all means, book a tour with us! 😀

What really makes a place are the people that live there. A few days ago we met a wonderful lady with a cracking sense of humour and an infectious smile, which was one infection my mask fortunately didn't prevent!

When nature takes over...

You find a lot of buildings that look like this all over Tbilisi, covered in grape vines or ivy or surrounded by trees. The city really does come alive in the spring and summer as shabby old apartment blocks are transformed with explosions of green like this.

Being a key stop on the 'Slik road' Tbilisi has always been a crossroads between East and West, North and South. A place where people from around the world met and shared their experiences, usually while sharing food and wine. These days people might not be travelling on horseback or boat nor are they trading leather or tea or magical potions or whatever they used to sell, but they are coming from further afield with plenty of stories to tell. Today 8 people from 5 countries (South Africa, Georgia, Iran, USA, UK) enjoyed one city and enough wine for the population of each of those countries.

Quite often the most beautiful parts of the city are just steps away from the hustle and bustle of Tbilisi's main thoroughfares. What I like about Tbilisi's 'Italian courtyards (which actually have pretty much nothing to do with Italy!) is that each one is its own small community. In some ways Tbilisi is a city made up of thousands of tiny villages.

Beauty in decay. The concrete jungle of Saburtalo is so far away from the famous old town of Tbilisi but these crumbling Soviet apartment blocks hold just as many stories of their own.

Drying clothes in the shadow of Narikala. I am always amazed at how distant you can feel from the hustle and bustle of the tour groups and street vendors of old town by just turning around a corner. It's like stepping into another world that decided not to bother with the whole tourism thing. Another reason I love Tbilisi.

In an earlier post I mentioned that one of the things I love about Tbilisi is that it is constantly changing. This is apparent everywhere. Whether it is new construction, demolition, renovations or this building which changes with the seasons throughout the year, one day never really looks like the other. Although I have to say, this might be my favourite incarnation of this particular house.
